Braun, Fielder, Gallardo, Hairston or Saito: Who Will Be Brewer Of The NLDS?
I meant to run this post on Saturday, but better late than never.
A 3-2 week might have been seen as mildly disappointing in the regular season, but in the playoffs it was enough to secure the Brewers' first playoff series victory in 29 years. Here are your Brewer of the Week nominees:
Ryan Braun reached base safely in every NLDS game and had multiple hits in three of them. Five of his nine hits went for extra bases, leading to a .500/.571/.889 batting line and +.526 WPA.
Prince Fielder also reached base in every game in the series. He only had five hits, but three of them went for extra bases for a .278/.381/.556 line and +.080 WPA.
Yovani Gallardo was the starting pitcher in two of the Brewers' three victories and allowed two runs on ten hits over 14 innings, walking three and striking out 14. He posted a 1.29 ERA this week and was worth +.639 WPA.
Jerry Hairston Jr had two multi-hit games in the NLDS, hitting .375/.400/.500 and providing +.134 WPA.
Takashi Saito pitched three scoreless innings in relief in the series, allowing two hits and walking none while striking out two. He was worth +.168 WPA this week.

I have to disagree with WPA here.
Gallardo was great, but Braun was clearly the NLDS MVP.

I have to disagree with you here.
Gallardo dominated.
They were both stars, but Gallardo's impact was bigger
Braun: 1.460 OPS
Every other Brewer not named Braun: .614 OPS
Difference: 238%
Gallardo: 1.29 ERA, 0.929 WHIP
Every other Brewer not named Gallardo: 6.60 ERA, 1.733 WHIP
Difference: 512%, 187% (349.5% avg)
According from my IFABS-certified* comparison, Gallardo’s series was 47% better than Braun’s in comparison to team performance.

By that metric
Kemp will destroy Braun for NL MVP.

Ah yes, but Braun played in five games and Gallardo only 2
238*5 = 1590% good
512*2 = 1024% good

I can't argue with choosing either Braun or Gallardo
Both were amazing. I went with Gallardo simply because of how bad the non-YG pitchers were.

Also because it was 2 starts, not just 1
Upton’s HR never happened in my opinion, so his WPA should be higher and his ERA should be lower.
