Brewers Even NLCS Behind Strong Performance From Wolf, Beat Cardinals 4-2
W: Randy Wolf (1-1)
L: Kyle Lohse (0-2)
S: John Axford (3)
HR: Matt Holliday (1), Allen Craig (1)
MVP: Jerry Hairston Jr and Randy Wolf (+.194 WPA each)
LVP: Mark Kotsay (-.097 WPA)
Win Expectancy Graph and Star of the Game Voting
This game was a textbook example of a bounce-back performance.
Randy Wolf, who struggled mightily against Arizona in the NLDS, was excellent tonight. He allowed two runs on a pair of solo home runs among six hits over seven innings, walking just one and striking out six. On a night when the wind was blowing out to right at Busch, he did a great job of working out of trouble and putting the offense in a position to secure the victory.
Meanwhile, the Brewer offense had just enough tonight to get the job done. They scored a pair of runs in the fourth on Jerry Hairston's double and Yuniesky Betancourt's single, one more in the fifth on a Ryan Braun double, and a final tally in the sixth when a Ryan Theriot error allowed Rickie Weeks to score. Jerry Hairston Jr, Ryan Braun and Nyjer Morgan each had two hits, while George Kottaras and Mark Kotsay were the only Brewer starters held hitless
Tonight's win ensures the series will return to Miller Park on Sunday for Game 6. It's now a best of three for the pennant.

Me too!
If the Tigers are eliminated by then, are they changing that start time to 7?
Yes
I called the ticket office today, and they said that the game was subject to change if the ALCS is over before then. I’m actually kind of hoping that they move the game later in the day. My son’s 2nd birthday party is on Sunday.

“Honestly disastrous” is right Wolfie. That game sucked. Glad you were strong tonight.
One thing I really like about Wolf

Prince's big scoop was on a tough play from Hairston
To be able to pick up the ball that quickly, throw it in one motion, and still be that accurate was impressive. No way McGehee could have made that play.
by gffjenks on Oct 13, 2011 11:01 PM CDT up reply actions 2 recs
I feel like...
although Yuni may get more hate on similar miscues by players such as Hairston and Weeks, the reason for that is because Yuni has a history of making awful defensive and offensive plays, while Hairston and Weeks don’t have that on their shoulders. When Yuni does something bad, it’s frustrating because it’s Yuni being Yuni, while when Weeks or Hairston does it, we can write it off as a fluky bad play and move on.
Not saying it’s fair to Yuni, but this is true in all sports. I don’t know if you watch football, but whenever a player like Jarrett Bush (on the Packers) does something bad, I always criticize him more because of mistakes he has made in the past, even though Bush isn’t nearly as bad of a player as he used to be. I just have the mindset of expecting Bush to make a bad play, along with how I have the mindset of Yuni making a bad play. It takes longer for those memories to erase.
So yeah. It’s not fair, but I’m pretty sure that’s how most people’s minds around here work.

That's the thing though
he has been awesome… in the postseason, where it counts. Seriously Noah, I hope your reading my posts differently from minnebrew. I think you are admitting here that this space was not collectively rooting for Yuni (at least until the postseason) and thats basically what I’ve taken issue with for the last two months. I’ve watched a ton of games this year, I understand how terrible he has been in general, but most of his terrible at bats came with Weeks on the DL. Hitting 6th doesn’t work for him, 7th however has been great. Hopefully the guy has a few more clutch hits left to give!

More from the angle of ’c’mon guys, he’s not THAT terrible’ than ’he’s a good baseball player.’ And from what I can tell (since I’ve been around here since early August) Warwolf is just about the only other guy whose said anything nice about Yuni. That’s as close to a fan club as Yuni is gonna get. ALSO, my husband and I came up with a fantastic hand gesture that we give every time Yuni makes a play… just take your right hand and make a fist, hold it up to your forehead and raise your middle finger. LONG LIVE THE YUNICOURN!!!!!!!

No one is denying that he's been playing well for the last two weeks.
It doesn’t take away from the HUNDREDS of games when he hasn’t played well. Two good weeks doesn’t erase an entire career of misplays and one pitch pop ups.

Not surprisingly, I find him to be good at being objective.
But this is a situation that all announcers lose at no matter what. Unless you’re a legend like Vin Scully.
For instance, I hear all the time about how Joe Buck is favorited towards the Cards. I don’t see it but I imagine it’s there. However, Cards fans accuse him of trying to prove he’s not for the Cards by talking really good about the opponent moreso than normal.

At the beginning of the season, there was talk of having Scully call the WS.
Not sure if anyone remembers this, but it had something to do with an online petition. The word on the petition got out to Buck, who responded that he’d be thrilled and honored if Vin called it. I haven’t seen anything since then, though.

You're fine, no worries
I get the point of the home field announcer thing. It annoyed us when we were playing the D-Backs because the play by play was a huge D-Backs fan.
However, that doesn’t change the fact that Pujols can do no wrong in the media’s eyes. He’s been referred to a God by multiple sources in the last few days. McGwire, who is perhaps the biggest cheat in the game gets a nice Yahoo! article about how wonderful he is…Brewers get articles about how much fun they’re having and all the trouble they stir up. Play by play announcer notwithstanding, it’s not anywhere close to a level playing field as far as the media spin. Now that’s not a diss on the Cardinals—it’s on the media.

Yeah, because those are the same thing.
A guy who has watched 162 games of one team for (x amount of years) and a guy who played for a team for 2 months and probably has seen 5 Cards games all year.
I realize he’s in a lose-lose situation and I’m not blaming him for being biased considering I find it a physical impossibility to get so locked onto one team for a whole year and then get told “So now you have to act like you don’t care what the outcome is” especially when said opponent is your fucking hated rivals.
But, my only point was that in terms of biases, I’d be hard-pressed to complain as a Brewer fan because I get to listen to my announcer the whole game while Cards fans have to listen to the enemy.
As far as the national media is concerned, they eat up whoever is the underdog so you should probably take that as a compliment.

Everyone is thrown off because of two reasons:
1. The media has not figured out that our bullpen is completely different from the one who blew 26 saves during the season.

Had a nice time sitting next to a Royals fan. I did not forget my rally towel this time. You’re welcome all.
I knew it wasn't your fault!
FanGraphs should consider a venue for a Gallery Night... they could even serve a cake with a Win Expectancy Chart of the 7/7/11 Brewers' game etched in the frosting, and 7-up. Oh, yeah - and t-shirts that say "SABR-Friday." I'm totally there.

Haha.
Just saw the highlight of the Hairston slide. He got up all ready to argue that he was safe before the ump said he was, anyway.
Prince has really struggled on the road this post season. He's hit into SO many double plays the last few days.

Needs more Braun running
RRR is really scared of Molina’s arm.

John Axford has broken the Canadian post-season saves record
previously held by Ron Taylor.
I keep forgetting we’ve got such a big following in Canada. While a save is just a save, a Canadian record is a Canadian record.

That's DM's secret strategy...
Sign a ton of Canadians… Grow a cult following in Canada. Get Brewers games televised in Canada and solve the small market problem or at least help increase our TV market!!!

I guess I missed out on the post-game thread last night
People sure got bent out of shape when discussing Yuni… you’d think the Brewers lost last night. Hopefully everyone has had time to sober up and sleep on it, so we can get back to cheering the Brewers onto the World Series.
