World Series Game 7 Open Thread
It's taken a month to get here, but all of October comes down to one game tonight: Chris Carpenter (starting on short rest) and the Cardinals face Matt Harrison and the Rangers tonight with the World Series on the line.
There should be plenty of excitement to discuss in the comments, but first take our final World Series poll.

It would have been the best game, if they hadn't found that footage of the Pirates/Yankees WS!

Three thoughts:
1) I approve of scoring runs off Carpenter, at any time, but particularly in the 1st inning.
2) Shiraz is delicious, especially the 2nd bottle.
3) I’m warm.

I have a problem with the poll
By checking the bear option, I have to admit it was a good World Series. I’m not prepared to admit that.

Impressive game? Yes.
Impressive comeback? Yes.
Do things like that happen all the time? More often than you’d think. The Brewers had a similar comeback against the Rockies this year, and that one even went, what, 14 innings? (even greater!)
And yes, I realize it’s the postseason, not the regular season, and it’s an elimination game for the Cards. But I still wouldn’t put Freese ahead of either Joe Carter OR Mazeroski, people who, you know, actually WON a World Series with a walkoff HR.

Nice pitch after the 1-1!
Has anyone noticed the lack of changeups in this series? I don’t think Duncan likes them. I’m not sure about Maddux, but I know he and Dave Bush argued about it, once, because they were leaving the yard.
Sometimes changeups look like they are forced, and the tempo sort of changes. The Brewers aren’t as adamant about having starters throw them as much, probably starting in the 2011 season.

this whole postseason has been littered with inconstant zones it seems.
not just with the cards.
Yuni'd.
There's only been one really bad call (the one at first base a couple of games ago)
It’s just the cumulative effect of little call after little call. I’m sure we have selective memories, but it does seem as though the Cardinals are on an insane run of umpiring goodwill over the past couple of weeks.
by Cheeseandcorn on Oct 28, 2011 9:01 PM CDT up reply actions
Not really.

Here's the zone from the whole game
There have been four pitches that were further inside the zone than that one, and yet were called balls.
All of those calls have gone against the Rangers – this is a game-changingly horrid strike zone, and the Cards are going to owe this guy a World Series title share. But the pitch in question was actually a pretty close one.

by Bush League All Star on Oct 28, 2011 9:17 PM CDT up reply actions
You may have a point, actually
If you look at their strike zone map with typical zones for LHHs and RHHs (I’ll just link to it, because I can’t display it large enough to see here), the pitch was well within the typical RHH zone. The map makes a few of those pro-Cardinals strike calls look more reasonable, but it makes that particular call look awful.
by Cheeseandcorn on Oct 28, 2011 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions
Here is my analysis.
The pitch before that was called a strike. Pretty close to the same spot. This one appeared to be just a tad lower, and just a bit one the corner. I rarely see an umpire reward one pitch, then not the next pitch right after on a 3-2 count. You will see them not reward it on players testing the corner as they keep getting more and more outside the zone to see where they can get extra.
I don’t know, just a weird call. Rangers didn’t do themselves any favors by compounding it.
That dog just won't hunt.
by Bush League All Star on Oct 28, 2011 9:29 PM CDT up reply actions
Close objectively.
But the umps been calling a wide zone a lot tonight which makes it even worse.
Yuni'd.
Given the magnitude of the pitch
And the fact that that spot shows the center of the ball, while a ball six inches more outside still would’ve caught the strike zone, that is just a terrible, terrible call.
I'm calling it right now.
This season was all an MLB conspiracy so MLB could kiss Pujols’ [censored].

Pujols is now the most plunked batter in world series history with 4 career World Series HBPs. He’s also the only player in post season history to reach base on a plunk, and then be driven in on an RBI plunk. Furcal joins Bill Robinson from the 1979 Pirates as the only players to have an RBI plunk in world series game 7. The only other players with RBI plunks in the World Series are Kirk Gibson, Darren Daulton, Earle Combs and George Pipgras.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Oct 28, 2011 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions
Discussing this point is obviously pretty silly
But I think the breaks and bad calls were probably about 5% of the reason the Cardinals won, at most. About 80% was them absolutely raking the ball up and down their lineup in a way I haven’t seen in quite a while. (The other 15% was a hodgepodge of the bullpen coming together, Chris Carpenter, and their opponents completely crapping themselves.)
by Cheeseandcorn on Oct 28, 2011 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm not disagreeing.
But they got some shit calls that went their way in the playoffs. They just did. That increased the degree of difficulty in beating them when they were playing very well. I don’t disagree that the Rangers reacted to the bad calls poorly. That doesn’t mean the bad calls didn’t happen. If my mentioning them makes you uncomfortable, well with all due respect, I really don’t care.

In terms of "unfairness"...
It was really a slap in the face to watch St. Louis perform up to its level of talent near the end! Grrrrr…
Talent does not always translate into success, and we’ve seen this happen to the Cards many times. Albert’s comeback sure did not help matters. Next season, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to say they might have some bad luck, and maybe a flukey bullpen.
But the top offense in a league has a ~75% rate in a fall classic (I’m not positive; this may apply to all of the levels of playoff ‘lcs/’lds combined with the WS in the past 20 years, but I’m not sure because of the timing of the wild card a few years since there were a couple of years without it.

we had a flukey bad pen this year up until the trading deadline
freaking awful
I think we blew something like 20 saves.
It was just terrible all around.
I think only two pitchers from the beginning of the year were on the roster in the pen at the end.
by jealousblues on Oct 29, 2011 3:46 AM CDT up reply actions
Yeah- it was...
But I think it was designed in the playoffs to compensate for the innings (probably 5-6 starts?) Wainwright would have pitched. The Bullpen sort of equaled an extra ace, in a way.
The luck had more to do with players not performing/injuries (and the final dagger was probably Punto).
We were good in 1-run games. We’ll most likely have to function next season the same way, but it won’t be the same as what happened to the Giants! What a run they had, in 2010. All great pitching.
Things are kind of bittersweet right now. It’s frustrating that you guys put all of the talent together at the right time, and even worse that we have to wait a few months before ST starts!
*I’m thinking you had to be pretty impressed with Texas! They are going to be around for awhile, and losing back-to-back WS championships is not the big deal people are making it! Maybe you got a little bit lucky with the outcome – but they could have easily won last night! There are your GOB’s ! I’m not sure I’m going to be as nice during the season, but I’m thinking about a lot of other things, aside from the playoffs. Congrats.

Yeah - I wouldn't go over there.
I haven’t really gone over since last winter, but they definitely deal with things their own way. They seem like good people, though. Just a lot of passion.
You guys/gals (at viva) tend to try really hard to be objective and good sports, and I think sometimes it can come off as insincere. If it seems like I’m insulting you, that’s not what I mean. It’s just, you know – - – kind of creepy to some people when other people come over and want to be nice
: )
plus, it’s not just you. It’s a universal thing. No one really should have gone to OTM after Boston lost that game… Whatever. Most of you guys mean well.

I've been so complacent, and miss talking about ballgames.
Sometimes, I just don’t care. I like to talk to people, I guess. It would be great if we didn’t have to wait so long for ST to start . . . there is always a risk I might talk to a lot of people from different teams until I click back into gear.

There is also a risk that a squirrel will highjack your account and talk to lots of people from different teams.

Are you, by chance, implying that I'm using another account?
Just wondering, because I don’t know why people would think that. As far as the squirrels go; it is beyond my control.

I have no idea what you're talking about.
That’s often the case (not a criticism), but in this instance I’m asuming you reply-failed, because I made no reference to you using another account, even in jest…

That was said in reply to cwolf, who was replying to and talking about jealousblues...
… who (in my opinion) is trolling here, and lamenting the 24 hour delay in his ability to troll the Rangers site, while claiming he just wants to congratulate their fans on a great season (the “any other name” is a shakespeare reference)…

I classify people who go on a lot of sites under the name "drifters."
Really, I don’t have a problem talking to people if they mean well. Not everyone can call their own team site a perfect fit, and maybe are more comfortable, elsewhere.
Pegasus is also super nice.
I did get a chance to point out the reasons that other team threads are not always waiting to hear compliments or talk about baseball after the other team loses. I really don’t mind talking, though, as long is it’s the off-season.
Re; jealousblues – if there is anything he/she should get better at, it would be a bit more restraint. People don’t have to go out of their way and shower the fans on specific team pages. Hopefully – - – it’s habit I always fall into; trying a lot more than I need to really try when it comes to feeling welcom. JJ.blues and Pegasus are really, really hyper after the win, probably, and when a person is very happy, they socialize more. It’s the same as me going to a party after doing some productive work, and having a really easy time wanting to talk to everyone. Maybe it’s the type of person I am, and how I function.
So I’m okay with it – - there are so many different people, and some aren’t as attached or rooted in the fan site they belong to.

What a travesty
The fucking Cardinals win the WS. Unbelievable.
Way to go, Texas. All you had to do was not blow 2 run leads in consecutive innings.
further proof that all a team has to do is get hot at the right time
just get into the playoffs, and a whole new season starts. NO ONE, not even the most shitbrained cards fan, could have seen this outcome at the onset of the playoffs.
Its just gonna make next year’s 88 win Brewer team winning the WS an even better story!
He’s actually underrated, but that’s another can of worms…
Texas was just as hot as us.
plus we started getting healthy, and the trades made a HUGE difference.
Its not like formerly crappy players started playing out of their heads for the most part.
They completely rebuilt the pen
and got one more legit starter
as well as a starting SS with good defense
also that you don't need to officially be the best team in the playoffs
you just have to be the better team against the team you are playing
He’s actually underrated, but that’s another can of worms…
Exactly - but it's interesting in a way, because two of the top offensive teams were playing against one another.
Game 6 had something to do with aliens (or Josh’s alien God : )

it was a great post season
but I was a little disappointed by the starting pitching all around for the most part.
Ive never seen anything like it where the bullpen was used SO much

Next season, there are a few things that might happen - - -
Bullpen pitchers are sort of hot and cold by nature. Wainwright will be back, but you’ll still have to perform close to the talents of your team.
In a way, I think we’ve got a chance to scrape up a few extra wins and sneak by, but that will depend on our starters. I’m sort of okay with performing over our projected wins/runs scored/runs allowed, because that’s how we have to do things. But I definitely think we still deserved to be in the playoffs!
And you guys will deserve it, and any dips in performance and/or injuries would be pretty helpful for us. I’m jealous, still, a little bit. That must have been really fun for fans to not expect anything to happen, get into the playoffs and beat good teams/take advantage of our pitching. Grrrr…

yeah, honestly the pen is always a "who knows"
and you have to wonder how carp will be after pitching the post season and another year older.
plus you have to consider FA.
You guys obviously have a great team. Hope you keep your big guy (and us to)

you know - - -
Doug Melvin says the Betancourt is better than what critics say! (blechhhh).
As far as keeping Prince, that’s nice of you to say that, and a lot of people really want us to buck the trend and have him for another couple of years.
But it’s not going to happen :(

clearly, but come on.
What team ever wins the world series with no one stepping up?
and its not like it was a million different guys doing that either.
how is Napoli a .500 hitter or whatever.
Freese is a very good player, its not like its Roger Cedeno owning Roger Clemens or something.

Okay, so this is out of character for me...
But it does not involve any cursing, so it’s fine.
I believe the NPB playoffs are on right now(?)
• Climax Series, First Stage: best of three series between the second place and third place finishers.
• Climax Series, Second Stage: best of seven series between the league champion (first place finisher) and the First Stage winner. The league champion is automatically credited with a one-win advantage.
• Japan Series: best of seven series between the Central League Climax Series winner and Pacific League Climax Series winner.
- Nonetheless, I’ve got to learn to lighten up around people, so I’m going to assume the Series name is very funny to other people.

I had just decided years ago to challange myself and try not to curse. But I don’t mind reading those words.
Offending people is a big fear of mine, though, so I’d rather be on the safe side.

Question;
Does the 5-day negotiation stage between free agents and current teams start tomorrow? That will be quite a roller-coaster. I can say I’m going to accept what happens with Prince all I want, but I don’t believe myself : (

The call in the 5th inning Strike 3/'Ball 4' was really a bad turning point for the Rangers and Feldman -
It had the same 7"12" break as the previous strike that was called (around the 0:47 mark in this video). I have not looked at other sequences throughout the game to see Napoli’s approach, but I do think the slight sideways turn of the head while he pulled the ball back into the strike zone would affect the call. On the 2nd called strike, where Molina thought he had been rewarded 1st base, Napoli did a better job selling it. The information on gameday with the 7/12 drop and break mirrors that of the pitch Molina thought he’d walked on.
This observation has already made it to several news sites, and yet I felt as though that wasn’t a tough break. It would have been really nice because it was a strike, but after reading the Fast article on Framing pitches at Hardball Times, i really pay attention to the way a catcher turns his head. It was a strike, but not really conveyed in a way that made it an easier call from the umpire.
(shrug) – oh, well. There is certainly a good amount of examples throughout the series where Texas had some horrible luck. This one just seemed like it wasn’t the most terrible call in the world.

um , no
for many reasons.
1 – the Sox win in ‘75 was legendary. Fisk’s homerun anyone?
2- The Cards won. Major suckfest. a Card’s win automatically disqualifies it as the best anything.
3- No Brewers involved. Again, disqualified as best ever.
Official list of good things about the Cards winning the World Series
1) It meant the Cubs didn’t win it
2) Err, that’s it…
