Taiwan All Star Series/Gold Glove Award Ceremony Open Thread
Craving more baseball already? There's some on MLB Network tonight as a team of MLB players open an All Star exhibition series in Taiwan. There's a small Brewer tie-in involved: Free agent-to-be LaTroy Hawkins in on the MLB roster.
Today's opening game, played in New Taipei City, will air on MLB Network at 8 pm.
Meanwhile, for the first time ESPN2 has staged a ceremony to hand out this year's Gold Gloves. Head over there at 9 to see if Ryan Braun (the Brewers' lone nominee) can take home the hardware.
Enjoy the game/pageantry!

I wonder if anyone has gotten plunked. Right now, the summary and box score features do not work.
It would be nice for Plunk to have more to do in the off-season; like “Plunks Abroad” statistics!
FanGraphs should consider a venue for a Gallery Night... they could even serve a cake with a Win Expectancy Chart of the 7/7/11 Brewers' game etched in the frosting, and 7-up. Oh, yeah - and t-shirts that say "SABR-Friday." I'm totally there.
I think I saw Roger Kaplinger(?)

Some ground rules;
Part of the dugouts are covered by retractable roofs. The roofs must be retracted during games, and any fly ball that hits the retracted roof and bounces back is not considered a foul ball until it lands in foul terrority.

Gold Gloves
Would anyone mind posting the winners of gold gloves so far, I don’t have cable.
They're not online anywhere yet.
And I’m watching the Taiwan game.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
This guy playing SS for Taiwan should be a Brewer.
Maybe Hawkins can smuggle him back home.

NL Left Field is next up on the docket.

Does anyone know why Greinke has not been considered for the Gold Glove?
My guess would be the lower strand rate, and the decrease in GB outs/chances. Otherwise, ~170 IP is enough. So I guess I can only think of the %43 strand rate, and the lack of chances to turn GB plays.
I’m also having trouble finding how many runs and/or wins his defense has contributed to. Hopefully, he’ll have more of a chance next year!
Also, if you’ve seen the fielding bible awards, he is not listed. So I’m not upset anymore.

Because ESPN doesn't want him to win it?
Eh, all of these post season awards are some sort of silly popularity contest anyway. And the ‘Gold Glove’ awards show the players career fielding percentage. Awesome.

Was it Fernando Vina that won a GG at 1B after only playing 15 innings there one year?
It was something similarly ridiculous, at any rate.

Rafael Palmiero
Played like 30 games at first and DHed most of the year with the Rangers.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
I should know this
I am humbly chastised.

One thing I don't understand very well is evaluation of defense.
With batting and pitching, I am able to see things “jump off the page,” and I’m able to really scan all kinds of things and make judgments without even watching a player.
Fielding, on the other hand; I’m not very good at prioritizing and/or mixing the different metrics to get a good picture of a player’s true defensive abilities are.
*I just want to add that I have not ever purchased an edition of the Fielding Bible, and that would probably help me to work through everything. It would be great to not feel as awkward joining a discussion, either! If anyone can give any other advice, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks.

Thanks!
One thing I guess I’d like to be better at is spotting a player who is really good at fielding his position for reasons that are not as obvious. Players who are actually above average, but more difficult to pick out; or, another way to put it: they are never discussed! Then, there are a lot of things players do that seem so effortless, I don’t notice, really. It’s sort of like when I was just learning about The Meters and thought they weren’t doing anything special the first couple of times I was listening. Now I’m wondering why I had trouble liking it at all because it’s so good!
*There is also a chance that there are not too many amazing players across the board, but there are a lot of good/average players who I would like to see on our team.

Yes, by accident.
His footwork is all messed up, and the throws he made were sailing all over the place. Flashy? Sure. Agile? At one point, probably. Years ago.
I’m not going to let myself have a short memory, again… errant throws, awful footwork; nothing has changed because he knows so very little as far as fundamentals are concerned.
He’s not an asset no matter what he does on the fly. It’s not even improvisation, because you have to know at least a few things to do that. I don’t really think I can ever like him. It might not be right to say that, but baseball fans can dislike players openly. Yuni has somehow – I don’t know – - I guess he has some way of making teams with only a little bit of money to spend think he’s the best option.

I wasn't talking that...
I should have done a better job with the question. A better thing to ask is why ZG wasn’t included in the top ten. Normally, Greinke has been overshadowed by Buehrle, and a 2nd choice. So if the Fielding Bible hasn’t included him, it probably has more to do with a lack of chances to make the plays, and his drop in % for strand rate.

Fielding Bible
Greinke placed 7th in the voting for the Fielding Bible awards – he just wasn’t mentioned in the article on the winners. Go to the complete voting list at this link to see the voting. Bill James and Joe Posnanski both had Greinke at #2 behind Buerhle, but some voters didn’t have him on their ballot at all.
Larkin seems to like Braun.

Larkin picked Braun.
And he has yet to get one right. So, death knell.

Gerardo Parra.
I am not surprised.

I'm glad they picked Parra. I wonder if they checked the Fielding Bible awards and got scared!
Wasn’t Parra a dark horse candidate for James? I’ve never looked at his numbers, so I can only go with what I’ve seen the past few years.
