Opening Day Roster Prediction Contest

Sorry, there are no prizes, but let's have a contest anyways!  What do you think the Brewers roster will look like on Opening Day 2012?  For the purposes of this, by opening day roster I mean the starting lineup on April 6 vs. St. Louis, plus the starting rotation.  i.e.: C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, LF, CF, RF, SP, SP, SP, SP, SP.  No need to explain any predicted trades, signings, etc.  Just list what you think the lineup/roster will look like.  Although you can explain them if you'd like!

The winner will be the person who has the most correct (out of a possible 13/13).  Please also list your prediction for the Brewers opening day payroll (according to USA Today).  The tiebreaker will be who gets this to the closest dollar.  If you do not get LF right, you will be disqualified and banished.

I also realized that I forgot to specify a relatively-soon deadline, which is kind of the entire point, but whatever! It’s more just to see what people think might/will happen this offseason.

Say I get Gamel right, that he is going to be in the lineup/on roster.

But he’s at 1B instead of 3B, would I get “half” credit for that? Because I think there is a very good chance that he will be at one or the other, given the situation at the corners.

Interesting

I think that warrants full credit, unless anyone disagrees.

I also don’t think there’s any chance Gamel starts at 3B though.

Yes

I think that the Marlins are looking to make a big push this year.
Either they sign Pujols then Gaby is surplus or if not then they still might want to make a push with Greinke. So either way I thought is was realistic that a trade of Greinke for Gaby and Anibal was possible with probably a 3rd player from the Marlins either a bullpen pitcher or a good prospect.
If Greinke will not sign an extension this winter then why not a trade like this with the extra dollars going to sign a decent SS but still try and get back a decent SP for this season

So Greinke to the Reds for Alonso and Cozart?

That’d be an interesting deal. I don’t think there’s any way the Reds would pull the trigger on that, but it’s definitely intriguing to think about.

by Cheeseandcorn on Nov 14, 2011 12:32 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, that would be it

and I’m thinking they don’t have issues with trading in division, so it’s probably the best fit. Cozart is Ian Kinsler with SS range, and Alonso is a slightly more powerful James Loney. I don’t have much issue with this lineup.

You could get more than Cozart

in a Greinke trade though

Alonso would have to be the lynch pin, but you could also probably get Yasmani Grandal as well. and then maybe a 4th OF like Chris Heisey.

The added money saved by trading Greinke away would allow you to sign Barmes and Edwin Jackson and your SS, 1B and pitching problems are cured, plus you get an impact level prospect to add to the farm system.

Reds would have to be “all in” to go for it.

by backtocali on Nov 14, 2011 2:08 PM CST up reply actions

Cozart would be cheaper than any FA

and solid gloves at SS are so few and far between, why not get one cost controlled. I would rather have Cozart than Alonso anyway. 1B is much easier to fill than SS.

I aree about the 1B vs SS point of view

In that its easier to replace, but not as cheaply probably. Look at this years FA market as an example. Its probably cheaper to sign Barmes than a guy Lee or Pena.

In the case of the Reds you can get average production at SS from them with Janish and let them not worry about losing out on Cozarts offensive upside as much. In the long run though, Alonso is going to be the prototypical big power bat 1B, and compared with an all glove or average SS, Id take Alonso over Cozart if I had to choose.

Payroll $100.5m

Assuming they face a RHP:

Lucroy, Gamel, Weeks, Alex Gonzalez, Braun, Morgan, Hart. Same pitching staff as last year.

Predict McGehee still on team, will be a platoon in April/May until either he or Green takes over full time.

Hairston won’t be able to agree to terms. Derrick Lee signed.

I see them resigning betancourt because the others want to much. They will spend a little more on hairston for his versatility. Would really like to see the defense upgraded but don’t see it with this line up. I think they would be in the hunt for the wildcard but not the division.
