Today In Brewer History: Happy Anniversary, Johnny Estrada and Claudio Vargas

The 2006 Brewers were a somewhat disappointing step backwards in the organization's development. A year after winning 81 games in 2005 for the first time since 1992, they fell back to 75-87 and were far from relevant in the playoff race. Clearly it was time to try something new and that's what the Brewers did: on this day in 2006 they traded Doug Davis, Dana Eveland and Dave Krynzel to the Diamondbacks for pitchers Greg Aquino and Claudio Vargas and catcher Johnny Estrada.

The most valuable years of Davis' career had come in Milwaukee, where he'd averaged 211 innings over three full seasons. He was one year away from free agency, though. He went on to pitch three good seasons for the Diamondbacks before returning to Milwaukee near the end of his career in 2010.

Eveland and Krynzel, meanwhile, didn't bring much to the Diamondbacks. Eveland made just five appearances for Arizona in 2007 before being traded again, and Krynzel never played another game in the big leagues.

On the other side of the trade, the Brewers were the last full-time stop for Johnny Estrada. He played 120 games for the 2007 Brewers but hit just .278/.296/.403 and might have been one of the slowest baserunners in franchise history.

The other two players acquired weren't much better: Claudio Vargas posted a 5.09 ERA in 134.1 innings in his first tour of duty as a Brewer. Greg Aquino made 15 relief appearances as a 2007 Brewer, and might be best remembered as being a reliever Ned Yost justified putting into the game because he "fields his position well."

Of the six players in this deal, only Dana Eveland is still a major leaguer.

With help from the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to 1989-90 Brewer Randy Veres. He turns 46.
