BCB Tracking Poll Voters Seem To Agree On Need To Create Payroll Space, Disagree On How
This week's poll was open from Monday afternoon through Tuesday, and received 180 responses. Here are some notable results:
- A near majority (49%) of voters think the Brewers should non-tender or trade players this offseason to free up payroll space. 40% think they should not.
- Kameron Loe (44%), Casey McGehee (39%) and Manny Parra (38%) were the most popular choices to be non-tendered, but none received a majority of votes.
- Meanwhile, voters strongly opposed non-tendering Shaun Marcum (7%), Nyjer Morgan (10%) and Carlos Gomez (13%).
Follow the jump for the full results.
Assuming the Brewers' payroll budget remains around $90 million, they currently have slightly more than $10 million to spend to fill first base, shortstop, two bench spots and three bullpen vacancies. How should they proceed?

I'm reading the results slightly differently
I see them as 57% don’t want Parra on the team next year, 72% don’t want McGehee on the team, and 66% on loe.
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

I suppose.
I’m curious what 19% of people think they can get in exchange for Parra. Probably a good chance many of them have unrealistic expectations.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
As someone who voted for Parra being traded...
I only agree think he should be traded if the Brewers get a good deal for him, but most likely they won’t so I think that he should be on theh team next year.
With all due respect
I can’t imagine any team willing to give the Brewers a good deal on an old LHP who can’t start, but has had some good success in the bullpen coming off of an entire year lost to injury.

29 isn't old for a LHP reliever.
Just ask Arthur Rhodes or any of the other left handed walking dead that still pitch. Staying healthy is a big if, but I think he’ll still be a quality bullpen arm. Trade value? You’re probably right, there isn’t much at this point.
Old was sort of a relative term
at 29, a lot of times, a guy has already peaked. So teams would need to be trying to project out production based on what he’s already done, rather than talk about ‘upside’.

I don't understand the Loe votes.
His pitching improved in every category, he’s still pretty cheap, and he’s a workhorse. Manny Parra on the other hand should have been traded in 2008.
I was thinking the same thing
Minus the Parra thing.

Think I forgot to vote
Not really against having Loe on the team, but he’s basically a ROOGY. I like having one on my team, but at some point when they start to get expensive, it might be better to spend money elsewhere.

Based on just his 2011 results?
I mean he didn’t have a very drastic platoon split in 2010.

Based on his career splits, the type of pitches he throws
And the my admittedly biased view of watching him.
After the failed “8th inning guy” experiment, RRR seemed to do a good job of moving him around and trying to get him in situations where he didn’t face good lefties or lefties in high leverage.

I don't think it's fair to put much faith into Loe's career splits.
They’re largely dominated by his time as a starter.
With that said, almost all of his struggles in 2011 seemed to come against lefties.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
OK
as Kyle notes his career splits include a majority of IP as a starter, so I don’t think that’s a great idea. As I said, last year he didn’t have a large platoon split.
That all being said, unless you’re the closer, I’d assume any RHP will be removed if facing a power LHB in favor of a LHP.
I wouldn’t label him as a ROOGY based on 1 year of data, though. He’s not Tim Dillard.

ROOGY was probably the wrong word
In 2005 Loe split between starting/relieving and had a .604/.792 L/R OPS split. 2008 he had 30 IP as a reliever with a .505/1.095 OPS split.
Agree not to put too much into the stats, but you also shouldn’t discount them.
Guess my overall point was that I’m fine having Loe, but they might be able to do better with his money. If they can’t do better, that’s fine.

That may be your assumption but I don't think our manager would agree.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
I think $2.8 MM is marginal
more than it is cheap. They might be able to find the same production from a young guy for a lot less, or they might lose out on his value and production if they guess wrong on someone else.
If Counsell and Kotsay were worth $2.2MM last year...
Then Carlos Gomez is worth all of that $1.8MM next year. Not necessarily apples:apples, but I think you know what I mean.
