Reds Acquire Mat Latos From Padres for Yonder Alonso, more
Without knowing who else is heading to San Diego, this seems like a great deal for Cincinnati.
UPDATE: The trade is official and it's Latos for Yonder Alonso, Edinson Volquez, and former first round picks Yasmani Grandal and Brad Boxberger. - KL

This is interesting, but it seems like the Padres spent half the winter trying to deal Latos, who still has four years of team control left.
You have to wonder if there’s a reason they were not just willing, but seemingly eager to be rid of him.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
bad clubhouse fit?
I read sooo many articles—you do too, I know, due to Mug—and I am sure I have seen something about Latos having a bit of an issue with his temper that the team was hoping he’d grow out of. I guess it didn’t happen.
And, ironically, they get Edinson Volquez back in the trade.

May have been the price to get the 3 prospects
Doesn’t mean Volquez will stay with the org. May be a temp measure and in any case he’s eligible for free agency in 2 years.
Wasn't Volquez the guy who curb-stomped Brian LaRue and ended his career?

Bob Melvin is Milwaukee's GM, right?

It was Cueto
Volquez had the PED suspension (meh) but Cueto was the one who kicked LaRue (and was antagonized to that point by Chris Carpenter…thanks)
Good point
so, really, Chris Carpenter curb stomped Andy LaRue.

We call him 'Handlebar Andy'

A samurai sword collection. If you can do it. I don’t know if you’re allowed.

Looks like Carpenter got the worst of that one
And now I feel all warm inside
Mark Attanasio is the best.
What a douche-a-palooza that mess was.
The only guy in that whole thing I liked was Rolen, and that’s because he was doing the whole, I’m holding on to you, but I’m not looking at you, so I’m not being aggressive thing that is so oddly effective.

Initial reaction
This kind of sucks for the brewers.

I’ve changed my mind now. I think the Padres did very well here.

Yeah, definitely.
Grandal is actually the biggest piece for the Padres.

It's actually pretty incredible that the Padres, dealing four seasons of one player, got Edinson Volquez and three pieces more valuable than him.

And being ineffective when he's actually played.
He’s had one good year in his career, back in 2008. He strikes me as almost a Betancourt like throw-in, though with upside to actually be good.

If he didn't hurt himself in 2008
He probably is still really good. But multiple arm injuries are bound to take their toll on a pitcher’s ability to get people out.

Although it hurts them that they didn't get a good starting pitching prospect/pitcher in return
Volquez has burned his arm out at this point, but I suppose he could be like Harang and really get helped by Petco.
Just seems like a big overpay to me.
Latos is great, but giving up two top prospects, a good young arm in Boxberger, and Volquez who was an all-star a couple years ago just seems like too much. They could’ve gotten Jurrjens for less.
Grillax people
Well, it's not that far-fetched given that the last time Volquez was actually healthy he was better.
(Only problem is that was four years ago)
If Plush had to pick Wearwolf or Vampire, I'm a Wearwolf!
I guess Christmas came early in San Diego
This is a huge step for that team, great trade for them. Now they just have to be willing to actually spend money. Huge overpay by the reds here. Latos is talented but I think he’s shown through some struggles last season that he’s not worth…well…this

Maybe we can pick up Anthony Rizzo, apparently the Padres will now shop him
Yes, I am just kidding.

They're pulling a Melvin and going all in...
…. before they lose their stud first baseman to free agency.

Yeah, thinking the same thing
Desperation move – they had to do SOMETHING to help that awful pitching staff or risk being stuck in mediocrity for the next few years.
Those moves can of course pay off, just ask the 2011 Brewers. We’ll see if the Reds can take more steps to improve before the start of next season.
Get a ife broseph
I think the Reds got taken to school in this trade.
It’ll be interesting to see how different Latos’ results are when he’s not pitching half of his games in San Diego.
I have no concept.
Yeah, I saw the splits but splits don't account for going from one of the least hitter friendly parks in baseball for half of your games to one of the most hitter friendly.
I have no concept.
isn't that what they're supposed to do?
Ugh, Shortstop
No. They show how he played in a really pitcher friendly park for half a season and a bunch of other parks for half the season.
Some of them hitter friendly, some pitcher friendly and some neutral.
It doesn’t show how he would have done if he was in a hitter-friendly park fro half of his games.
I could look up how he’s pitched in each stadium I suppose but there’s no way I care enough to actually bother doing that.
I have no concept.
I think the Padres won this one
I know that the prospects the Reds dealt were mostly of the blocked variety so having them hang around AAA for a while in 2012 isn’t doing the team any good.
On the other hand…Mat Latos?
100% agree with you
I can’t believe the Reds sent so much.
Makes you wonder if the Brewers could have gotten Yonder Alonso for Brock Kjeldgaard and Eric Arnett…

What’s the last intradivision trade? That mess with Delmon Young to the Tigers?

For Alonso straight up. After getting ignored all winter he lurches in the other direction

He's going to be on a better team,
But in a worse ballpark.

The prospects that the Padres are getting
I think have a greater upside but the Reds are not lumbered with Yuni…
Steep price.
I guess we’ll see whether or not it pays off.
Packers: Working on a dynasty.
Blackhawks: Taking care of business as usual.
Badgers:Back-to-back B1G Champions!
Brewers: Move along, nothin' to see here.
There were rumors that the Padres would look to flip him.
I’d prefer to just go with Gamel, though.
