Brewers win rights to negotiate with OF Norichika Aoki?
Awesome!
Edit, brief scouting report (per Patrick Newman on Fangraphs):
Norichika Aoki (OF, Yakult Swallows, 28) – In a post-Ichiro, post-Matsui NPB, Aoki reigns as the consensus top hitter. I’d actually go so far as to say that he"s the best pure hitter Japan has produced since Ichiro. Aoki is a line drive hitter with occasional power who uses the whole field. He’s also a disciplined batter, walking about as often as he strikes out, which is rare in Japan. Aoki is short and somewhat stocky at 5’7.5, 182 lbs, but is a good runner with tremendous range in the outfield. The only knock on his game is his rather weak throwing arm, which may limit him to left field at the MLB level. For video, I dug up some batting and fielding highlights and a breakdown of his swing on YouTube.
Highlights (from above scouting report)
Winning bid had previously been reported as $2.5 million.

This is interesting and weird
I want to get a good source on this before we put it on the front page. How did you see this, from Passan?
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
I see it on Rotoworld, same source.
Do we have any idea what kind of contract he’d be looking at?
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
No, it's from a Japanese reporter on Twitter
If Plush had to pick Wearwolf or Vampire, I'm a Wearwolf!
Yeah, I see that, just figured you didn't follow a Japanese reporter on Twitter.
Seems like everybody’s treating it as fact. Wow is this weird. $2.5 million just to negotiate? I like the idea of getting him, but I didn’t think it would be in the budget.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
I follow everyone on Twitter (except Buster Olney)
I don’t think he should cost much, seems like he’s more of a 4th-OF-with-upside. At this point, whatever Mark A. is willing to spend is fine with me!
If Plush had to pick Wearwolf or Vampire, I'm a Wearwolf!
Yeah, absolutely
Just weird, because it seems like the only spot he would fit is at left for the first 50 if Braun’s out. If there’s anything the Brewer minor league system has a surplus of, it’s short lefty outfielders who can hit a bit but can’t play center. Is he the fifth outfielder if everybody’s back? Maybe they’re looking to deal Morgan or Gomez.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
He is apparently a very good defensive outfielder, with a lot of range.
A weak arm might be the lone reason he couldn’t play CF or RF. If it’s even close to passable, I’m guessing he would play everywhere in the OF.
Could they be expecting Morgan to regress a bit?

Also,
wiki (take it for what it’s worth) says he changes his stance whenever he slumps. So we could be looking at a guy who swings like Ichiro and changes his stances like Counsell. Could be interesting…

Fresh off our recurring argument about the organization's failure to scout Japan, here's a top bid on a player from Japan.
Weird.

I just think it’s funny that Melvin basically lies about everything ever.

Oh, I guess I was confusing Nakajima and Darvish...I thought Nakajima was a huge bid too.
But Nakajima’s looks like it was more like $2m. Weird.

Yanks have said they aren’t, but a good offer would get them to do it. The overwhelming belief is the Yankees won the bidding on Nakajima by accident.

I think Aoki is pronounced Ow-key based on youtube videos and google translate's talking person.
But I have no idea how to pronounce Norichika. It sounds nothing like Nore-ee-cheek-ah though.
I think maybe it’s “No-rich-ka Ow-ki”? link
If Plush had to pick Wearwolf or Vampire, I'm a Wearwolf!
Google translate, by the way, translates his Japanese name as "Aoki declared parent" in English.
So, good news for him, I guess. He going to be a father!

Texted someone who had studied Japanese (and I think has gone to Japan) and they said it would be pronounced Know-ree-chee-kah.
So Know-ree-chee-kah Ow-Key.
I guess there is an A sound in Aoki.
eh-oh-key. But when you say it fast, it sounds different than if you really emphasized.
I don't speak japanese
But I’m a big fan of the Japanese mixed martial arts scene and so am rather with Japanese names. There is a famous fighter named Shinya Aoki, so I know that one an you are pronouncing Aoki right. There is the slightest A sound but for practical use ow-key is correct. I don’t recognize the first name buy I think no-ri-chee-ka is the right way to pronounce it.

If this is true, then this is a good sign that the Brewers FO is willing to sign international players. Hopefully it’ll turn into a trend.

Salary relief
Looking 5-6 years down the road, Harper’s going to be expensive. In the same time-frame, Go-Go still won’t be able to hit himself out a wet paper bag. The Nationals are thinking long-term.
What goes on the back of his jersey? Norichika or Aoki?
Fighter of the Nightman. Champion of the sun. Master of karate & friendship for everyone.
Ichiro is the only Japanese player I can think of that didn't have his second name on the jersey.
I’m not extremely well-versed on this, though.
Yeah, his was a special circumstance
Since Suzuki is such a common name in Japan, he always went with his far less common first name. And then when he came over here, he stuck with it. Completely different situation from the Chinese, who always list surname first (e.g. Yao).
Where does the surname go?
Maybe I misunderstood your comment, but surnames are written first in Japan (and Korea) as well.
In Japan, Aoki’s surname is written before his given name. In other words, his name is written (and announced over the stadium PA) as Aoki Norichika.
And just to confirm, his surname is pronounced Ah-Oh-Key. Patrick Newman knows what he’s talking about.
And all three syllables are pronounced with equal weight (ie. no syllable is stressed more than the others) if anyone’s truly interested in being able to correct the ESPN guy’s pronunciation.
Assuming that Milwaukee signs him, of course.
Good news.
I like how Aoki looks better. Hopefully he gets a single digit number too.
I say this for future t-shirt buying, in case he turns out to be halfway decent.

this exactly
Orix was trying to generate hype for their legitimately hype-able player.
Also, yes, there are lots of people in Japan named Suzuki. Considering that there are currently 2 Suzukis in MLB and only one is a Japanese import it’s pretty telling. (Ichiro, unfortunately, seems to be at the point of his career where Kurt may have the better season. >_<)
On the highlight video his jersey has Aoki.

Hajime mashite, new outfield Brewer dude
Slap-hitter with contact skills and a bit of pop? Yes please. But better yet, that catch at 8:30 on the highlight reel…together with some of the other defensive plays…makes me think that this guy could be a potential upgrade/replacement for either of the platoon twins in center. Arm or no, he can’t throw any worse than Nyjer or wildly than Gomez.
Wonder what Morgan could bring in trade — a solid arm to round out the bullpen perhaps? Everyone loves Plush, but selling high might not be the worst idea in the world…

Nyjer is really underrated (even on this site?), I don't think we should trade him.
I think his personality obscures the value he actually bring as a player. One of the reasons Milwaukee got him for basically nothing in the first place.

Plush + Sushi = Aoki
Been as big a fan of Nyjer Morgan as anyone since his crazy breakout 2009 season helped me trounce my fantasy baseball league…and when he was being dangled as trade bait by the Nats last spring, I was 120% for Melvin bringing the guy to Milwaukee. And he certainly was an integral contributor to the Brewers’ success in 2011.
That said, a few things to keep in mind:
(1) Morgan’s offense AND defense dropped off toward the end of the year, and went over a cliff in the postseason. Regression to the mean might account for some of it…and his career numbers do suggest that explanation to some extent, at least with his hitting (not sure how to explain away the defensive lapses that piled up at the end of the year,, though)..but it’s something to wonder about, especially in connection with-
(2) Morgan’s volatility. Whether any of us wants to admit it, the biggest pre-Braun embarrassment of 2011 was Nyjer’s Hyde-like transformation from lovable clown to powderkeg…and let’s not even rehash what his antics did to galvanize LaRussa’s crew. Not saying he’s a bad guy, and likewise not saying it’s inevitable that things will go bad again as they did in his last two stops — but it might be wise to keep those possibilities in mind when weighing the stay-or-trade options.

Morgan hit .292/.400/.389 in September.

He did put up a .179/.281/.531 line in the postseason though.
Small sample size and all, but depends on how you define end of the year in this case.

If Plush had to pick Wearwolf or Vampire, I'm a Wearwolf!
His offensive numbers last season weren't out of line with his career numbers.
And the “powderkeg” thing is as tired as it is meaningless. What “meltdown” are we waiting for? Plenty of players in the majors have started fights. Prince Fielder got into a fight with his own teammate, but I don’t think anybody’s going to hold that against him this winter (I certainly wouldn’t).

I hope it doesn't happen...
… but I don’t think having someone else besides Gomez ready to go if it does is a bad idea. Fielder basically had 2 incidents in his time with Milwaukee, and both of them were several years ago. He also overtly expressed concern about how he was perceived and a desire to do things differently. Morgan’s had more than 2 incidents and, as far as I can tell, doesn’t see any need to change. I don’t think your comparison is apt. I love Morgan as much as any one and I’ll always be grateful for 2011, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he both regressed and did something stupid that got himself suspended next season. If he’s not happy, he doesn’t play as well. Last year he was happy. Hopefully he will be this year too…

Possible opening day lineup? (if the bad thing happens)
CF – N. Morgan
LF – N. Aoki
RF – C. Hart
3B – A. Ramirez
2B – R. Weeks
1B – M. Gamel
C – J. Lucroy
SS – A. Gonzalez
SP – Y. Gallardo
If Plush had to pick Wearwolf or Vampire, I'm a Wearwolf!
That lineup is more than capable of carrying this team for the 25 or 50 games it would take for Braun to come back.
Provided Aoki and Gamel actually hit at this level.
Fighter of the Nightman. Champion of the sun. Master of karate & friendship for everyone.
This is one of the weirdest moves ever.
Melvin doesn’t go after a SS which the team actually needs and basically makes it sound like they would be stupid for bidding on him, then they go after an outfielder…. I really don’t understand this unless there’s a trade in the works that we don’t know about.
I have no concept.
Reasonably
assuming they come to terms with Aoki at all, he could be the trade. I’m not sure how public bids are before a winner is announced, but I think the Brewers may have been a little surprised to win the rights to negotiate.
I doubt the Brewers would bid unless they wanted him.
Yankees can afford to send out flier bids and then see what happens, but if the Brewers are putting down money they probably want the guy.
If Plush had to pick Wearwolf or Vampire, I'm a Wearwolf!
It's just a bid though, isn't it?
They don’t actually transfer the 2.5 million unless they actually sign him as I understand it, so they haven’t spent any money yet.

Here's a theory.
They didn’t go after Nakajima because they thought his asking price would be through the roof, and they were surprised by how small the winning bid was. So when Aoki came up, Melvin said “what the hell”, put in a bid roughly the same as the one that won Nakajima and voila! And now he’ll try to figure out how much it will take to actually get him here and whether or not there’s a trade to be made…

That’s what the Yankees did. The Yankees really didn’t need a SS (though they will likely keep him as a utility guy to replace Eric Chavez) and could have used the backup OF. I’m actually really surprised Aoki cost that little. Not surprised at all about Nakajima.

I wonder if Braun's hearing will be within 30 days
Smart, time-buying move by Melvin. I’d be surprised if they sign him if Braun’s cleared, although I guess they’d lose leverage if the suspension is upheld.
by The Left Button on Dec 18, 2011 11:03 AM CST via mobile reply actions
I assume that until Braun's possible suspension is resolved
Then Aoki is a likely starter in LF until Braun comes back and then Melvin hopefully will be able to trade for what is required.
If Braun gets the suspension lifted then Melvin has a surplus of outfielders to trade from before the start of the season.
Maybe it will be possible to trade with the Padres,Giants or Mariners for a 1B.
I don’t know if the Brewers can sign Aoki and then trade him right away, I take it that any trade would have to involve Gomez,Morgan or Hart
So, basically, this guy is Ichiro

Two comments on him from that NPB blog
From Oct. 30:
Norichika Aoki’s name as re-emerged in the posting rumor mill, courtesy of Nikkan Sports. I had kind of written him off as an MLB prospect, partly because Yakult has seemed so unwilling to post him, but mostly because his numbers fell off so badly this year (.292/.358/.360 this year, after .358/.435/.509 last season).
From July 26:
Posting rumors involving Aoki were once common but have really died down over the last few years. There was some reporting that he was going to ask to be posted last offseason, but nothing came of it. It seems pretty clear that Yakult wants to hang on to him, so my take is that it’s highly unlikely that Aoki will be posted this offseason. If he was, his MLB value would be questionable. In this year’s depressed offensive environment, Aoki has largely held on to his on-base skills, but seen his power decline significantly. After regularly slugging around .500 over the last several years, Aoki has just 12 extra base hits (no home runs) in 292 at bats this season, for a .363 rate.
At $9 million, Hart's contract can move
When Melvin signed him to the extension, he basically signed for fair free agent value. That means Hart’s contract is tradeable without having to pick up any of his salary. The might be willing to trade some pop in the lineup to finally get a natural leadoff hitter. For all I know, Aoki will cost $5 million / year, but even if he comes in at $3.5 million / year, the Brewers would be saving $3 million this year from moving Hart and probably get a decent prospect in return.
Is Aoki going to be content to be a 4th OF in the majors? Even if we assume the worst-case and Braun is out for 50 games, why would Aoki agree to come over to the U.S. to be a back-up fielder for 2/3 of the season? It doesn’t seem like a satisfying career move. Of course, KRod needs to be a closer … unless there’s more money in being a set up man).
If the Brewers went with an OF of Aoki, Gomez, Morgan, Brewers pitching would only give up 8 doubles all year. That would have to be the best defensive OF in all of baseball.
I agree with you on Hart. I don't see him with the team in 2013. 1 year - $10M is a desirable contract for a player of his value
We should be able to get something decent in return next offseason.
And they'd be lucky to hit 10 HR between the three of them.

Look at it this way. They probably won't work out a deal until they know what's going on with Braun.
Braun’s hearing will come before the 30 day negotiation period ends. I’d guess that the Brewers would wait until after that to finalize a deal.
(Not sure if anyone else mentioned this)
But from what I understand the Brewers won’t officially be awarded the rights to negotiate until Thursday, when it is announced to both clubs by the office of the commissioner. As mentioned, I wonder if it will depend on what happens with Braun, if something is to happen within the next month.

They only pay if they come to terms with Aoki
Otherwise, the American teams wouldn’t bid as much since there’s a non-zero chance the player wouldn’t sign. It would give all the leverage to the players and would give the Japanese teams some incentive to cheat the system.

You can never have too many rangey outfielders!
It will be nice to have a real shortstop, too.
FanGraphs should consider a venue for a Gallery Night... they could even serve a cake with a Win Expectancy Chart of the 7/7/11 Brewers' game etched in the frosting, and 7-up. Oh, yeah - and t-shirts that say "SABR-Friday." I'm totally there.
