Today In Brewer History: Happy Anniversary, Victor Santos

On this day in 2003, the Brewers signed free agent pitcher Victor Santos. The 2004 Brewers would be Santos' fourth organization in as many seasons: The Tigers, Rockies and Rangers had all already let him leave in one form or another.

Santos is a perfect example of how misleading pitcher wins can be as a statistic. In 2004 he posted a 4.97 ERA, a WHIP just under 1.5 and averaged just 5.1 innings in his 28 starts, but somehow managed to win eleven games for a Brewer team that only won 67. Even Ben Sheets, who probably should have won the Cy Young award, only won 12 that season.

The following season Santos' ERA improved but the team results around him regressed: He posted a 4.57 ERA but went 4-13 and after the season he left as a free agent.

Santos is still only 35 but hasn't surfaced in the majors since pitching for the Orioles in 2007. In 2010 he pitched for Laguna in the Mexican League.

With help from the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to 2011 Brewer Mark Kotsay. He turns 36.

Sheets had a great year in 2004

But Randy Johnson should have won.

Clemens 18-4, 2.98, 218K, 1.157 WHIP
Johnson 16-14, 2.60, 290K, 0.900 WHIP
Sheets 12-14, 2.70, 264K, 0.983 WHIP

Ugh, Victor Santos.

His creepy eyes still haunt my dreams. As does his awful pitching.
