MLB Daily Dish On Hiroyuki Nakajima, Jerry Hairston Jr., More
While I was off getting lunch, Tom Haudricourt's Twitter feed lit up with Brewer activity. MLB Daily Dish has more on these notes:
- The team isn't going to bid on Hiroyuki Nakajima.
- They are actively trying to sign Jerry Hairston Jr.
- Melvin says he hasn't exchanged proposals with Scott Boras regarding Prince Fielder.
- They're still considering several other infield options.
- Chris Bosio and Bill Castro are as good as gone.

The response should have been, "How is it possible you haven't seen this guy?"
I understand that scouting Japan isn’t something they do, but a baseline familiarity and a small collection of film isn’t that hard to come across.
Now that's great tasting chicken!

That question will be repeated quite a bit if he ends up being a bargain for some team.
Contributor on Brew Crew Ball, Commissioner of Prognostikeggers, Owner of a broken sarcasm detector
I think that's the thing.
The posting fees pretty much guarantee that a Japanese player won’t wind up as a bargain. That would scare me off, too. Ichiro’s the only one to have turned out to be worth it, isn’t he?
I got goons.

Only eleven players have been signed by MLB clubs through the posting system.
Three were only signed to minor league deals.
Here are the other players & deals:
Ichiro Suzuki (Mariners – 3 years, $14 million – Winning bid $13.125 million)
Kazuhisa Ishii (Dodgers – 4 years, $12.3 million – Winning bid $11.26 million)
Akinori Otsuka (Padres – 2 years, $1.5 million – Winning bid $300,000)
Shinji Mori (Devil Rays – 2 years, $1.4 million – Winning bid $750,000)
Daisuke Matsuzaka (Red Sox – 6 years, $52 million – Winning bid $51,111,111.11)
Akinori Iwamura (Devil Rays – 3 years, $7.7 million – Winning bid $4.5 million)
Kei Igawa (Yankees – 5 years, $20 million – Winning bid $26,000,194)
Tsuyoshi Nishioka (Twins – 3 years, $9 million – Winning bid $5.329 million)

Holy crap, that initial Ichiro deal was a bargain for the ages.
by Cheeseandcorn on Dec 2, 2011 1:54 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
As part of that initial deal for Ichiro
$7 million of it was deferred, but taking the posting fee into account, the Mariners paid an average of $9 million a year for that first three-year deal. That’s still a bargain considering what he’s getting paid today.
Also, his agent is listed as Tony Attanasio. Any relation to Mark, or just a coincidence?
Contributor on Brew Crew Ball, Commissioner of Prognostikeggers, Owner of a broken sarcasm detector
Probably just a coincidence
Wikipedia lists only one brother for Mark Attanasio… screenwriter and producer Paul Attanasio.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
the Otsuka signing was also a deal
until he blew out his elbow, but by then he was the Rangers’ problem
They can't afford a plane ticket. Have to save up every penny for that Betancourt re-signing.

Seriously, that is so stupid.
The Brewers have known they have zero shortstops in the organization for quite a while. I’m not saying Nakajima is a lock to even be above-replacement, but it’s just lazy to not at least show due diligence in exploring every possibility.

The whole uncreative, “that’s just not what we do” mentality is why so many GMs are terrible at their jobs. I don’t understand how anybody entrusts these people with teams worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

I'm sure covering every loose end on several continents is incredibly hard.
But that doesn’t change the fact that the Brewers might be missing out on an interesting player from a place where a lot of interesting players come from because they opted not to scout over there.
Now that's great tasting chicken!

Yes! I'm not even sure it's that hard though.
There are two professional baseball leagues at this level in the world. Two.
You don’t need to build a permanent scouting infrastructure, just put a guy on a plane.

I think he’s saying it’s stupid not to check every avenue of improving your club.

Other teams have probably been scouting him since he was 16
But Brewers should totally try to outbid them if they like what they saw in the few games they watched and whatever video they can find

How do you think scouting works?
If Plush had to pick Wearwolf or Vampire, I'm a Wearwolf!
by SRB on Dec 2, 2011 2:42 PM CST up reply actions
Watch a couple games
Check YouTube, and go outbid other teams who have had many people watch him, talked to him, talked to his teammates, saw him take BP, fielding drills, have a feel if he’s progressing or regressing as a player. If those teams that have done all the legwork think he’s worth X, totally outbid them because you’re a creative GM!

I think you have an unrealistic notion of what scouting is.
Do you think they watch these players in person thousands of times?

by SRB on Dec 3, 2011 2:00 AM CST up reply actions
I guess the Brewers just don’t have the resources to invest the millions of dollars it takes to watch a player take BP, or conduct the lengthy personal interview that constitutes the bulk of the professional and amateur scouting process.

playing possum?
since everyone has their panties in a bunch over what melvin mentioned to TH, did anyone consider that Melvin lied? Because, you know he has never lied before….
Why would Melvin tell the truth? It would only drag the price of the bid up. By not being publicly interested, he might sneak in there for a reasonable cost.

Well, the defense would be worse than it was this season
but that’s still probably a better IF than McGehee/Yuni/Weeks/Gamel.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Doubt it.
Gamel’s problems as a defender were mostly throwing.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
I think the footwork led to inaccurate, late throws.
It would be like two left feet.

FanGraphs should consider a venue for a Gallery Night... they could even serve a cake with a Win Expectancy Chart of the 7/7/11 Brewers' game etched in the frosting, and 7-up. Oh, yeah - and t-shirts that say "SABR-Friday." I'm totally there.
by Jess'HittheBall on Dec 3, 2011 9:08 PM CST up reply actions
In all seriousness, though, Mat should have been moved from 3rd right away.
It’s the closest to the batter, and he’s got to judge it coming in at high speeds. Add the fact that he’s got to make the longest throws to first for a putout, and you’ve got a disaster.
I know most people here have played a lot more baseball than me, but I forget these things, often.
And, because it got to a point awhile back where Don Money mentioned “poor footwork” more than once, Gamel should have been moved. First base probably has an insane amount of footwork, as well. But at least he won’t have to act as fast. Some people just don’t have it. I should know, because I tried out for 2 musicals in school, and was so embarrassed because I couldn’t keep up with anyone. Same with volleyball… why wouldn’t they just let me have fun?
Poor Gamel… poor Brewers!

Yup flogging, not flagging.

Kyle-
What is this opinionmart survey pop-up? I tried getting rid of it with adblock elements hider, but doing that messes with the scripting for bcb, and wiped all of the contact out from this page.
If it is something I must fill out and something you are aware of, I will. Otherwise, I’m really, really annoyed by these things and can’t remember how long it’s been since the last time I’ve seen a pop-up.

.. I’ve noticed that when I access BCB from anywhere other than my personal laptop, it’s a complete nightmare. Takes forever to load, and when I try to leave, about a dozen new tabs with BCB’s front page open up immediately thereafter.

This happens to me at work.
It is SO annoying. Having 10 new pages pop up when I close out is not cool.
The GRE Prep software requires IE 7 to work.
Most idiotic decision I have ever heard of in programming. Also, ABC’s online streaming of TV shows only works in IE. There are reasons. I just hate that companies are too lazy to get rid of the reasons.

It didn’t come back when I logged in a few minutes ago, so maybe the problem is solved. It was just odd that it found its way through . . .
