I feel for Mets fans tonight
we’ll be feeling their pain in just a few weeks
I am too drunk to taste this chicken.

Difference being that the Mets were going to suck this year with Reyes or without him.

They get a third round pick because Bell was above Reyes.
Ouch…
If Plush had to pick Wearwolf or Vampire, I'm a Wearwolf!
I never understand why teams bid against themselves.
Maybe someone else made him a better offer than the 90 million the put on the table previously, but if they did, they kept it awful quiet.

The no trade clause might have played a part.
But yeah, I’m sure they had the best offer on the table.
Damnit, if we were gonna offer 5/100 to Prince just to have ti turned down...
why couldn’t we give the same to Reyes? Seems like there would’ve at least been a chance he’d have taken it…
This contract is totally insane.
Be glad the Crew didn’t make it.

This is the appropriate response

I don't know...
Even with a lot of missed time due to injuries, he’s been worth more than $20m a year on average over the last 6 years (FG). Even with some gradual declines due to aging, if he can somehow stay healthy, there is some chance that Reyes actually earns this money.
There is also a pretty good chance that the marlins are trying to duct tape him together for 50 games a year by 2015.
It’s probably a good one to miss.. While a free spending team like the Marlins can take chances like this, we probably can’t.
actually the most likely outcome
is that Reyes is someone else’s problem after the great Marlins fire sale of 2013.
they're keeping him warm for NYY
until jeter retires.

How so? Reyes is a beast even factoring in injuries.
Very solid contract other than the bidding-against-themselves part.
If Plush had to pick Wearwolf or Vampire, I'm a Wearwolf!
this
Reyes got 130 fewer AB’s than Prince this year and still had a higher WAR and it’s not like this is a fluke. Even if he’ll only give you 120 games, Reyes is still worth it.
But you need another shortstop to play in his place for the other 42 games.
Miami, might I suggest Yuniesky Betancourt.
Applying pop culture to Brewers discussions since 2009, earning the nickname of "Our Little Abed".
Because regression

I hope the Marlins sign Fielder, too.
I can’t wait to see what they do when they realize people still won’t show up to the new stadium after the first year.
Then Pujols in that case.
I wouldn’t mind Fielder to the Marlins just because they are a team that I can kind of root for.
But those uniforms!!!

That's a huge contract
I’m glad we’re not paying it.
The again, I think we are now more likely than not to bring back Yuni Betancourt.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
That's a good thing
Maybe it’ll mean that Rollins would be willing to take a 2-3 year deal.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
And I thought Rollins was wanting 5 years.
He’ll be old at the end of that.

I don't think the Brewers are in any worse shape than before
Reyes was well outside the realm of realistic possibility.

It's the size/length of the contract that has people a bit uneasy
That it took a 6-year commitment for someone with Reyes’ injury history to sign him doesn’t bode well for the asking price of Furcal and Rollins (and Yuni, for that matter; 2 year contract for Yuni makes me retch).
The Brewers will not be competing with anyone if they wish to resign Yuni
He has no suitors except the Brewers.
Agreed

This works for the crew
Hanley can now be traded.
by Mr. McGehee on Dec 4, 2011 11:19 PM CST via mobile reply actions
I'd dig that.
But the Marlins would be silly to not move Hanley to third.

They'd be silly to have him switch positions.
SS has much more value. They can unload him for pitching and dump his salary. I think the crew could get him for Marcum and McGehee, maybe have to toss in a prospect.
by Mr. McGehee on Dec 5, 2011 9:52 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
And then who pitches?
We are a damned with we do, damned if we don’t. I’m under the assumption we traded our number 1 prospect, and only impact bat in the minors, for a pitcher for more then 1 year.
Yeah but I would trade Lawrie for one year of Marcum and multiple years of Hanley Ramirez
That trade isn’t going to happen though.
If Plush had to pick Wearwolf or Vampire, I'm a Wearwolf!
It's only silly if they plan on trading him
but it looks like they want to keep both bats in the lineup.
Besides, it’s not like Ramirez is that good defensively.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
You are only more valuable as a SS if you can handle it defensively.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
The going rate for shortstops is crazy high
It’s a fallacy to say they’re overpriced, though, because these large contracts seem to be what the market will bear. I doubt Melvin had the contract sizes in mind that are being given out. Given that it sounds like they’re pursuing Rollins, I have a feeling no matter what contract they give out, people here are going to be screaming bloody murder for it being “too much.”
I suppose it could be “too much” if they could spend that money better elsewhere like 1B or the bullpen, but that’s going to have to be a helluva bullpen arm to make up for the complete and utter lack of production from the shortstop position. Even “overpaying” for a shortstop might be the best use of resources for the Brewers this season.
Heck, at this point, it’s going to take at least $2 million to bring back Betancourt. If they’re going to get crap for production from that spot anyway, they may as well bring up Maysonet and have it cost them under a $1 million.
completely agree
It seems high, but it’s going rate. Furcal and Rollins figure out to be both about 10 mil a year, and at that I’ll take Rollins. The contract might not be the greatest, but we’ll forget once we see it’s not Yuni out there.
I think of the Wolf deal. No one thought 10 mil/per was a good deal. It was a non issue this year. As long as someone lives up to their contract, it won’t be an issue.
by Mr. McGehee on Dec 5, 2011 11:02 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
I will do it for $300k.
I’ll even make it look like I’m trying on all the weak grounders that I don’t get to.
If Plush had to pick Wearwolf or Vampire, I'm a Wearwolf!
I'll do it for 200k
I’ll try hard on all grounders AND I won’t swing at the first pitch.
Market isnt always overpaying for SS
A couple years ago you could get a pretty good SS for something like a backup speedy CF
