Rosenthal: Brewers to sign Alex Gonzalez
Holy cow I just got really lightheaded from happiness.
Update: Alex Gonzalez deal with #Brewers is one year with a vesting option.
For ease of access, here are Gonzalez's fangraphs page and B-Ref page.

Don't get the confetti ready just yet
We still do need some backups. While not as bad as signing him as the starter, I don’t really want Yuni back in a Brewers uniform… even as a bench player.

We can only hope
But sadly I think DM still might consider bringing Yuni back… if for no other reason because he’s familiar.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I highly doubt Betancourt will play a backup role
He can only play SS. You need a bench UTIL guy.

I love K-Rod!
FanGraphs should consider a venue for a Gallery Night... they could even serve a cake with a Win Expectancy Chart of the 7/7/11 Brewers' game etched in the frosting, and 7-up. Oh, yeah - and t-shirts that say "SABR-Friday." I'm totally there.

Let me explain the reaction, before!
In my mind, at the time of the announcement that Yuni was not coming back, I thought that K-Rod accepting arbitration forced the issue even more that Doug/Mark would want to do the right thing, and get some defense!
I don’t love K-Rod, but I do think something good came out of this situation. Now, I do not feel so much stress of having to worry every day about Betancourt possibly becoming our starting SS.

The turbine picture was cool
Don’t get me wrong it definitely got pretty windy and ridiculous in some areas but where I live it didn’t seem half as bad as it was meant to be. Perhaps we’re a bit secluded or it was a local thing because a couple of other people nearby were saying the same thing. Certainly didn’t seem bad enough to close the schools down across the whole council but I suppose they end up getting criticised by people no matter what happens…

There are roads and bridges shut close by
But none of the schools shut early here and to be honest there never seemed to be a reason to.
On the other hand there were gusts up to 165mph today (Admittedly on high ground) and upto 90mph at sea-level so the councils do have to err on the side of caution

No
He likes what’s going on with the Brewers and re-signs to an 8-year/$80M deal… most of which is deferred.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
You have to wonder if he's really wishing the Brewers had $23 million to give him
that he really likes the team that’s coming together there and would rather play there than any of his other options.
I also wish the Brewers had $23 million more to get Prince back.
If the Brewers can give him the best offer
I’m sure he’d be ecstatic to come back.
I think all the attention that DM got from Boras is just Boras trying to get an offer out of him so that he can shop it around.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Now we just need the Cards to get rid of Carpenter and Molina and this will be an almost perfect offseason.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
Last two years:
Derek Jeter, 5.0 fWAR
Alex Gonzalez, 4.5 fWAR

Not wanting to put a downer on this but
This is the same Gonzalez that was listed as the 4th worst SS on Kyle’s post about Yuni that is on the front page.
So it is yes it is an improvement on Yuni but it is not exactly a giant leap forward.

I accept that
But is not as if Gonzalez was close to being an average SS last year. But the ABY factor is high I admit so feeling better than I probably should about the signing
We're not going to get an above-average SS through free agency, just isn't going to happen.
Not every player needs to be a star, they just need to not drag the team down like Yuni is very capable of doing.
If Plush had to pick Wearwolf or Vampire, I'm a Wearwolf!
by SRB on Dec 8, 2011 3:30 PM CST up reply actions
I thought that unless we got Furcal then yes getting a average SS was unlikely
But Gonzalez has roughly 12 full seasons as a major league player and has a total WAR of either 6.6 or 13.6 depending on which one of B-ref or fangraphs you prefer. So even if you take the higher value he is likely to worse than a replacement player.
Indeed he has only once according to B-ref or 3 times by Fangraphs been over 2WAR.
It is an ok signing, it is not that much of an improvement but it atleast is not Yuni.
2 WAR is considered an "average" player
Not a “replacement” player. 0 WAR is a “replacement” player.
Greinke: "It’s not about the guacamole itself. I just don’t want to let them win."
2-time BCB Fantasy Baseball Champion
That is incredibly misleading.
You are counting all of his worst seasons when he was in his early-20s, nearly a decade ago. Since 2003 he’s averaged 2.1 fWAR/600 PA (above average), is cheap, and is two years off the best season of his career.
And for the record, 2011 fWAR:
1.3 – Hanley Ramirez
1.1 – Alex Gonzalez
0.5 – Rafael Furcal

Applying pop culture to Brewers discussions since 2009, earning the nickname of "Our Little Abed".

There’s reason to believe he’ll be better. Yuni, not so much.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
if people can't accept not getting Reyes,
they’ve got issues since he’s already signed elsewhere, ergo, they officially cannot accept reality…
He also put up 3.4 WAR in 2010, and is at least a neutral fielder
And as previously said NOT YUNI!
Greinke: "It’s not about the guacamole itself. I just don’t want to let them win."

Yeah, but he's twice as good as Yuni, purely based on WAR.
or half as bad, depending on if you’re a half-full, half-empty sort.
Yuni made 4 million for .5 WAR last year. Gonzo made 2 million for 1.1 war. That’s 4 times as much WAR per $.
Yep
He probably is worth more than Betancourt by a half game or so.
I just dont get why DM would have signed Gonzalez instead of Betancourt though. Gonzalez had no where near the 70 RBI than Yuni had the year before coming here.

Depending on what kind of contract he was looking for, it may have been an issue.
If the reports that the Cardinals are looking to re-sign him are true, then you’re probably right… between the Cardinals and Brewers, he’s probably going to choose the Cardinals unless the Brewers offer him a bigger contract.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
it was reported that Furcal wanted a 2year deal
and DM probably is too gunshy given his injury history
Depending on who we got as a backup
that wouldn’t have been that bad (depending on the money). The Brewers are going to be in the same boat after next season (needing a starting SS).

Dougie had to know that as bad as the K-Rod situation is, if he signed Yuni again it would be a revolt.
Gonzalez is not great but he is not terrible, either. As long as they make another move or two that improves the team instead of hurting the team, the Brewers have a good shot again this year.
by kotsaythebuzzkill on Dec 8, 2011 3:27 PM CST reply actions
Frankly, "not great, but not terrible" at SS is probably all the Brewers need to have a good shot at 90 wins.
Their current roster (yes, including KRod) is good enough to make the wildcard, especially if there are 2 wildcard teams. If the Cards get Rollins, I don’t see how the Brewers can catch them for the NL Central, but 90 wins should get a wildcard.
Seriously? The Cards were 6 games behind the Brewers and just loss Pujols (Pujols > Fielder)
I don’t see how we aren’t the favorites, even with Wainwright back.

Wainwright is huge
and their bullpen can’t be as horrible as they were early last year. They’ll be able to spend that Pujols money on Rollins, a 2B and a 1B to make up the bulk of Pujols’ production just like the Brewers are trying to patch together a Frankenstein’s monster version of Prince.
Pegging Wainwright for 6+ WAR coming off an entire missed season seems pretty generous
They’ll probably bring back Furcal and add someone like Beltran. Sure, anything can happen, but the Brewers won 96 games last year and could easily fill the gaps made by Fielder and the bullpen departing. I just don’t see a Pujols-less Cardinals being a mid-90s win team.

I also think they'll do better replacing Pujols than the Brewers can do replacing Prince.
They have at least $22 million to fill those 3 holes. Even before KRod Arbitrocalypse, the Brewers didn’t have nearly that kind of money.
Maybe, unless that's the same line of reasoning that says the Brewers have $20+ million because we tried to sign Fielder?

Gonzalez has 38 HR over the last two seasons, and would have hit 4-5 more if his home stadium was Miller Park
(based on Gameday BIP Location mapper)
If Plush had to pick Wearwolf or Vampire, I'm a Wearwolf!
I so called this
I’m happy to get +.6 WAR out of the SS position. That’s .6 less WAR we need to make up for Prince leaving. And if Gonzalez even plays at a replacement 2.0 WAR, that’s +1.5.
Now go sign Punto.

I'm just going to say it:
I would rather have had Jack Wilson. Can anyone enlighten me to the upside of Gonzalez over Wilson?
Jack Wilson has accumulate -0.1 fWAR over the last two seasons and can't hit HR

Fair enough, guess it depends on the defensive metric
Wilson also hasn’t had 450+ PA since 2007, so I think Gonzalez is the safer bet between two similar players.

actually, you're totally right about Gonzalez being better than Wilson
bRef does some weird sorting, and I only counted half of Gonzalez’s 2010 season. He’s substantially better than Wilson.
I take it back. I for one, welcome our new Gonzalez overlord.
I was just about to post the numbers
Because I was certain that there was no way Jack Wilson posted more than 4.5 WAR in the last 2 seasons.
He reminds us of Josh Wilson too much.

Where’s the additional $250K coming from… signing bonus?
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Oops, I was looking at his 2010 contract on cots, thinking it was 2011.
2011 was an option. You’re right!
What are you basing that on?
SS are expensive this year, it seems. I wouldn’t be surprised at $3.5 million + $4 million option, at least.
I don't think I've ever been happy
to have signed such a mediocre player. I don’t think I could have taken another year of watching Yuni “play” defense.
Venezuelan SS who can't hit but is really good at defense. Hmm...
Looks like we got Greinke for free after all!

Theriot might be a little too expensive at this point
but Punto would be a nice addition. Heck, I’d even be fine with Bill Hall for the league minimum as long as he’s still got those mad high-five skills.
