Can we snag Young from Texas?
MLBTR just reported that Michael Young makes sense for the Brewers at SS. I have been thinking (dreaming) about that scenario for a while now. If the Brewers are all in, why not snag Young from the Rangers? He can hit, he's a tough guy to strike out, and is a solid defender. He would also solve our SS problem for the next 3 seasons. The only problem is that the Brewers probably don't have the pieces to land Young unless they create a hole somewhere else. Plus Young has a pretty steep price tag for the next 3 seasons. It is fun to think about and I would love to see him wearing Brewer blue!! I know everyone is sick of hearing it, but Ronnie Belliard.....I mean Betancourt's numbers are a little deceiving. On paper he looks o.k., but watching him play you will have Belliard flashbacks while pulling your hair out!!

HE IS NOT A SOLID DEFENDER
HE IS A REALLY REALLY BAD DEFENDER AND ISN’T THAT GREAT OF A HITTER AND IS MAKING $48 MILLION OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS WHEN WE ARE TRYING TO LOCK UP RICKIE WEEKS AND SHAUN MARCUM WHO ARE BOTH WAY MORE VALUABLE AND YOUNG IS CLEARLY DECLINING BECAUSE HE IS LIKE THIRTY SIX YEARS OLD AND WE WOULD HAVE TO TRADE ONE OF THE LAST REMAINING DECENT PROSPECTS FROM OUR FAILING MINOR LEAGUE SYSTEM WHY DOES THIS DISCUSSION KEEP COMING UP ARRRRGGGGHHH

Not only...
Should we trade for him, we should immediately sign him to a 5 year extension for 100 mil. He has a batting title and a GG. The guy is a beast.
Really? I was thought he was a solid defender? Didn’t he win a gold glove as a SS? Maybe I’m way off base here….you’re right though, $48 million is a TON of money for a guy his age!
Jeter won a gold glove at short stop last season.
Some could argue the award is offensively based. Or used to be offensively.

Did you mean used to be offensive?
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
Solid?
He was a full-time SS from 2004-2008. During that time, his UZR was positive only once… in 2006. In 2008, when he won his GG, his UZR was -4.6.

Repeat after me
Gold Gloves are in no way shape or form any indication of defensive ability.
If you disagree look up the AL Gold Glove winner at 1B in 1999. Complete joke.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
1999 AL GG winner
Posted a +2.0 UZR. Not saying that’s everything, but I feel like the decision could be a lot worse.
Even though he only played 28 games there in 1999?
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
Touche, sir
The thought that a GG winner would have only played 28 games at a position never even crossed my mind. I didn’t even look at that.
Wow, yeah, that’s absolutely nuts.

On paper he looks horrid.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
Yeah.
The paper is the part that concerns me.
I’m not smart enough to look at the other stuff and do anything but drool and mumble.
I wish he would stay on paper and not show up for Spring Training.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
then
we could copy him with silly putty and squish him into a ball.

Can't we just squish him into a ball anyway?

There is one reason and one reason only to not trade for him
Michael Young is not good at baseball.

He is better than Yuniesky Betancourt at baseball
But this is not uncommon.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
That's like saying
you know, there’s a lot of guys better than Neifi Perez.
the obvious shortcoming of this team is infield defense, and that being said, Young’s glove is not a substantial upgrade over Yuni.
I miss JJ Hardy.

Anyone know any magic? Maybe we can get the 2007-08 JJ Hardy back! Who knows….maybe the pressure of being the starting SS on a legit contender will spur his motivation. Maybe he will surprise us all!
the 2010 twins werent a legit contender?

Solid Player
Who cares about his defense, the Brewers haven’t cared about defense since Nam why change now? I’d be willing to pay him $5 mil per year on his remaining contract, so Texas would need to pick up $33 mil. Young can hit and hit for average, something the Brewers haven’t had since Brady Clark. By the third year, Young will be our Counsell, backing up at short, third, and second. Give Texas Manny Parra and pay no more than $15 mil and I am excited.
Noted high average hitter Brady Clark, who topped .300 once in four seasons with the Brewers. Next highest being .280
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
my point exactly
We don’t have a hitter who hits for average. Braun is good for .300 but he’s also a power hitter who tries to do too much sometimes. Young would be a great complement in our lineup because he gets hits.

Hitting for average
2007: Braun – .324 Young – .315
2008: Braun – .285 Young – .284
2009: Braun – .320 Young – .322
2010: Braun – .304 Young – .284
Too bad Braun corrupts those numbers with all of his home runs.

point
The point I am making is that no one around here respects youngs numbers. He hits for average which is what we lack. A 6, 7, 8 of lucroy yuni and gomez looks depressing and probably will be around .260. No one around here should be bashing the idea of getting young, if the price is reasonable
by bauer351 on Feb 14, 2011 3:25 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
What would you rather have?
Someone with a BA of .260 and an OBP of .340, or…
Someone with a BA of .290 and an OBP of .320?
tough assumption
SLG probably wouldn’t be equal because the player with the higher average will have a higher SLG. Young will probably regress but will still be around .280/.330/.430 in my opinion. You need hits down in the order to drive runs in to be productive. Plus yuni, lucroy, gomez, or dickerson are not going to hit better than young this year. Who do you want as your 6th hitter? All im saying is that i’d rather have Young than any of those listed above. Our top 5 in our lineup is obviously great, but after that there are issues. Pitchers are going to make yuni lucroy and gomez swing the bat this year anyways, they arent going to draw any walks. None of them will be close to .340 OBP
.280/.330/.430 with terrible defense isn't that good though.
I don’t think anyone here would rather have Betancourt over Young at equal cost, but the problem is Young costs far too much for (in reality) not that much of an upgrade.
Ryan Braun: He loves it. -- Four pitchers in history with 8.5+ WAR and <250 IP seasons: Greg Maddux (age 29), Pedro Martinez (age 28), Roger Clemens (age 27), Zack Greinke (age 25).
You seem to be forgetting
that Young’s offense isn’t the problem here.
We need to compare Young v. Betancourt v. Cruz.
We need to consider offense, defense, and, (most importantly, at least in this case), cost.
Twitterize me: @mykenk
Why is that a tough assumption?
Adam Dunn bats .250 and slugs over .500. It just means the guy has more extra base hits, but fewer total hits.
Is that really that tough to see happening?
What it comes down to
I guess what i keep looking at is that Young would make our lineup better and provide similar to a little decrease in defense at SS. Texas has no leverage right now and teams know it so its not going to take a ton to get him. We would have to pay for him but the fact is he is a better 6 hitter than anyone we have right now by a large margin. Im not saying we should go out and pay him $16 mil per year for 3 years and trade someone to get him. The Brewers would have all the leverage in negotiations becuase they dont need this deal and if the price is right, young would be better than yuni and cruz i dont how that is even an argument
But not as good defensively, and much more expensive. You act like he’d be costless. He’d cost us a prospect or two.
He might be better offensively (which is FAR from a sure thing), but the marginal improvement is not worth the marginal cost, so it’s not a good investment.
Twitterize me: @mykenk
and still more expensive
with comparable defense.

I'm not arguing that, but saying that he isn't good at baseball because his contract is bad
is a hyperbole

higher average in no way means higher slugging

Just my opinion, but I think Braun’s problem last year was that he tried to do too much too little.
