Rickie's Back!!!!
I thought for sure he was going to walk, sooooooooooooo happy.
Was going to post this story but not surprised that even though it’s less than 10 minutes old, someone beat me to it :)
Pshh what do you know
OV says 4 years/ 25 million. Seems totally reasonable that someone who wanted 7 million this year would settle for less than 7 million for 4 years.

i was laughing at that one too
the $31M seems reasonable, especially if there’s a $3-5M signing bonus

If you think OV is bad...
check out the comments on MLB.com…
This is unreal. I love the Brewers but really?? U have got to be kidding me… we offered rick 4.6 mil for a year now we r giving him 10 mill per year!!??!! HES NOT THAT GOOD!! WE JUST GOT ANOTHER BILL HALL, SUPPAN CONTRACT THAT WILL TAKE YEARS TO PAY OFF… MARK MY WORDS RICKY WILL GO DOWN WITH INJURY AND OR FALL OFF… WE COULD HAVE GIVIN THAT MONEY TO MACUM, SIGNED HIM MULTI YEAR…. I CANT BELIEVE THIS!!! JUST WHEN WE GOT ALL THE PIECES IN PLACE WE R GONNA WASTE OUR MONEY ON WEEKS!!
I love Rickie, and I’m glad that he’ll be a brewer for a long time. That being the case, I still don’t understand the math involved in this one. He wanted 7.8 Million, and the Brewers wanted to pay less than 5 million. How in the world do they come to an agreed upon average of nearly 10 million per year?
And my favorite…
say what you want rickie weeks is the best offensive threat in nl after jayson werth and that includes albert pujols …great signing for milwaukee he should go 320 30 100 30sb’s next 5 yeaRS
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Yeah, that multi-year deal to MACUM needs to happen.
Applying Simpsons and Star Wars quotes to Brewers discussions since 2009.
I, for one, am not convinced
A preferable move would be to save money and try to see if we could tempt YAN ABUN from the Tigers. Or, if we really need starting pitching, we could always go back to the Jays and see if we could lock up ICKY OMEO for a few years. Damn, even AAMIS AMIEZ would be a better idea!

Your 2012 Brewers!
That’s everyone locked up except 1st base through 2012 with the option of switching out an underperforming SS or CF after 2011 if there’s a better option available.
didn't realize that right away
nice!
"I'd rather die than live in a world where I can't kick your ass"

?
We could switch out any underperforming positions… Why SS/CF? Gomez/Dickerson are controlled thru 2013.
Twitterize me: @mykenk
I meant we like the players we have locked up through 2012 at 6 positions + starting rotation
and have the bonus of not having terrible contracts at SS/CF where we aren’t as happy right now. We have the option of swapping out the crappy pieces.
Wait...Hardricourt was the first to break this?
and not some guy covering the Marlins or something?
That’ll be Tom H’s first inside word since the 2010 season ended.
didn't Tom break the greinke news??
or was that someone else? i may very well be wrong

Sure enough, they were discussing a deal between three and five years.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
I bet the 5 yrs, $50m figure
Includes an option.
by Cheeseandcorn on Feb 16, 2011 11:32 AM CST up reply actions
With the option
Four years would take him through 2014, and the option would be for 2015, if I’m understanding correctly.

I don't think he's worth 10M now,
and don’t think he’ll be worth 10M a year for the next 5 years. I hope I’m wrong/
Twitterize me: @mykenk
Is it relative?
I agree that when this contract ends he’s going to be on the downside of his production and it’ll be hard for him to prove he’s worth it. The next couple years though I have no problem with, and I haven’t heard anything about a no-trade clause yet. And it may seem like a lot of money, but it’s only 40% of what Pujols turned up his nose at.
Won't he have automatic no-trade?
With the 10 years in the league, 5 with one team rule?
Though that could obviously change with the next CBA.
Get a ife broseph
The better comparison is Uggla
5 years $62 million for Uggla. At 5 years $50 million, Weeks is coming in about 20% below Uggla. The early posturing made it sound like his agent was pointing at the Uggla contract as the starting point for the negotiations and Melvin wasn’t listening. I would certainly believe KL’s 4 years $40 million guaranteed which would be an even better deal with Weeks’ injury history doing unknown things to his future production.
Weeks’ pseudo-vesting option still has Weeks betting on himself, the Brewers are getting a hedge and an overall payoff for both sides in 2015 if Weeks is healthy enough and good enough to remain a full-time 2nd baseman.
Week = Uggla
mas o menos… Better D for Rickie, little better OBP (from memory, didn’t look this up), less power than Uggla. But they’re pretty close to the same player.
Yeah, the only real difference
Is the injury concerns for Rickie, and it’s debatable how much we should expect the injury past to influence his future. That said, on this particular deal, even if he has one full, healthy year and three partial injury-filled years, he would probably be worth his contract, so I’m not worried about it.
I had a link here to my blog, but it's now defunct and I guess I've lost the URL. Currently taking suggestions for a new signature.
How is it stupid?
Over the last five years he’s been worth $56 million, and that’s with all of his unfortunate injuries and missed playing time, and without adjusting for inflation which makes a win over the next five years more valuable than it was over the previous five.
Rickie is a ridiculous athlete, he’s not going to fall apart by age 33.
Ryan Braun: He loves it. -- Four pitchers in history with 8.5+ WAR and <250 IP seasons: Greg Maddux (age 29), Pedro Martinez (age 28), Roger Clemens (age 27), Zack Greinke (age 25).
Fall apart more, you mean.
Yeah, I’ve since backed off on that stance. It’s longer than I’d like, but whatever, it’s not like we have a minor league system, we better lock up all these guys long term.

My guess
Four years, $36-38 million, with a $12m team option for 2015 with a buyout that increases the guaranteed value to $40m.

I dont understand from Tom's article
is it 4 years plus 2011, or 4 years including 2011.

extension means
4 years after 2011, since he was already on the team. That’s probably where Rosenthal’s 5 years comes from.

Doubtful
Since he doesn’t have a contract for 2011 yet.

Understandable. Wonder if it’s games played in 2013+2014, or average games played in 2013+2014. Could be significant.

Agreed
Prince is gone after this year. I feel like between Gamel and hopefully some sort of upgrade at short, or maybe CF, we can weather that storm. But if we lost Prince AND Rickie, I feel like we’d basically be screwed for the last year we have Greinke under contract.

Meant more in 2009.
He could have won the 3B job then. But still, rather have him everyday at AAA than 2 days a week at MLB. Gonna need a RF/LF next season.

I'd be fine with him as a bench bat
Or in AAA playing LF/RF everyday.
Odds are that Braun or Hart will hit the DL at least once, would be nice to have a replacement ready to go.

Yeah exactly
He doesn’t need anymore development at the plate and has proven that he can hit minor league pitching.
If his OF fielding will improve in AAA, go for it. If he can improve just as much with major league coaching and practice, I’m fine with that as well.

Well, might as well not even try for that.
Greinke’s not signing long term. Maybe if he gets 2 rings here… but we’ll see.

But I’d still give it a crack before shifting my attention to Marcum.

Have we forgotten about Weeks' injury history?
Given the 2015 option conditions, the Brewers are anticipating the potential need of having someone take innings in 2013-2014. I would think they’ll keep Farris at 2B and worry about making a decision about him when Weeks is still hitting 25 HR in 2013.
Too lazy to look up the rules
But wouldn’t Farris be a minor league FA or rule 5 eligible at some point in the next 2-3 years?

The way I understand tendon sheathe injuries
is that if they happen once, they don’t happen again. So I wouldn’t really call him ‘injury prone’ or say that it should have too much bearing.

Otherwise I’m sure he would have been at SS before now. Maybe he can hit enough to be trade bait, but I doubt it.

They would have moved him there if they thought he could play there
There is no way they’d put a guy at 2B if they thought he could play SS.

My thought is they maybe kept him at 2B because up until this offseason
we had a long term short stop, and not a long term 2B.
Twitterize me: @mykenk
You can almost always move a SS to 2B without it being a big deal
Ryan Theriot comes to mind as a guy who did it mid-season.
If they thought he was at all capable at SS, they would have at least let him play a little SS in the minors to give him the option of being a MLB utility player.

Or Hardy to 3B :(

Well we do have quite a few good SS prospects in the minors.
If he was capable of playing SS I have little doubt he would be.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
So, Braun, Gallardo, Weeks, Hart locked up through 2014 at least.
Plus McGehee, LuCroy, Axford pre-arb, and Dickmez is still within 6 years. Not too bad, a relative amount of cost certainty should help the free-agent markets be much clearer for the Brewers going forward.

Who knows
Sure?
I’d like Gamel in Left and Braun at 1B, but I know no one agrees with me there.
Twitterize me: @mykenk
Actually, it could
I don’t think Gamel has the range/speed that Braun does
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Braun has poor range
I have no idea how Gamel would do, but he could be a below average defensive OF and still be significant defensive upgrade over Braun.
Get a ife broseph
I don’t think Braun’s that bad. He has a career -6.2 UZR/150 in LF, which is poor but not atrocious. Given the 5 run positional adjustment between LF and 1B, he could move to 1B and play league average defense and it would only be an upgrade of around one run per 150 defensive games.
Ryan Braun: He loves it. -- Four pitchers in history with 8.5+ WAR and <250 IP seasons: Greg Maddux (age 29), Pedro Martinez (age 28), Roger Clemens (age 27), Zack Greinke (age 25).
McGehee should play 1B
After Prince leaves. The only reason he doesn’t is if we find some magical FA, or we decide Gamel is finally ready. And we don’t leave Casey at 3B for his D, only because Gamel’s is even worse.
McGehee's value as a below average 3B > his value as an average 1B.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
Not to mention he was pretty close to average last year....
Following his offseason knee surgery.
I’d like to see how he does in 2011 on defense before I’d be comfortable moving him off of 3B.
Get a ife broseph
And we don’t leave Casey at 3B for his D, only because Gamel’s is even worse.
Huh?

One interesting side note
As listed above, Braun, Gallardo, Weeks, Hart and Wolf all have significant salary commitments for the next two years or more. So this looks like a pretty firm commitment that payroll is going to remain up around the current level for a while.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
They're on fair contracts, though
If the financials go south, a lot of those guys aren’t on albatross contracts. They can all be traded for younger, cheaper options without the Brewers sending along cash in the trade (maybe with Wolf, but not the others right now). If they wanted, they could probably firesale the whole team and go into 2011 with a $40-$50 million payroll.
Obviously, I don’t think they’ll do that, but Mark A doesn’t really have any completely sunk costs on the roster right now.
