Colin Fly: Weeks' deal is 4/$38.5 million
It also includes an option for a fifth year at $11.5 million. The option could vest if Weeks meets playing time requirements in 2013-2014.
If the option vests, the total value of the deal would be $50 million. If the option doesn't vest, there's likely a buyout clause that pushes the guaranteed value to roughly $40 million.

Without doing a lot of analysis
My gut reaction is that sounds like a very solid deal for the Crew. He’s more or less being paid like a 2-3 win player, which is a number that he can easily blow out of the water if he’s healthy.
I had a link here to my blog, but it's now defunct and I guess I've lost the URL. Currently taking suggestions for a new signature.
I will take this
It is one less player that has to be replaced next year – he is peaking at the right time – it is all good.

Counsell isn't our SS
but yeah, we might need a new one of those. I’m speaking strictly in terms of players under contract/control for next year.
There’s a few relievers too, but I gotta think those are pretty much irrelevant/easily replaceable.
Twitterize me: @mykenk
If they wanted to resign Betancourt next season, they could still do so without picking up his option.
They would just release him and resign him.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
The Brewers will be in the postseason in 2011 if that's a consideration
I don’t think I would be the only one that would be thrilled if we want to consider paying Yuni $6 million next year.
But wanting to pay him $6mil
means that he’d have established himself as a consistent >1 WAR player in the course of one season. He’s only done that once so far, in 2006. If he does it again year, great. I still don’t want him going forward. We can stick Cruz in for free and not see a true drop off.
Also, yes they could cut and resign him, but he has a $2mil buyout, which means that if the Brewers were to do that, they could be valuing as less than a $4mil player, and that isn’t a good sign.

I've got our payroll at $75-$80 Million for 2012
With Gamel at 1B.
Needing a new SS.
Assuming the bullpen is filled from within.
Possibly needing a new #5, depending on how the Narvdog pitches this year.
http://www.mlbsoup.com
Also, needing to fill our entire bench.
I’m really not sure how the team will look next year. They have to find a SS for under 5 mil, basically. Or maybe Wolf gets traded away.
http://www.mlbsoup.com
I guess i meant if they wanted to be competitive.
If they want to rebuild, they should be able to trade Greinke and restock.
http://www.mlbsoup.com
Possibly Marcum too
Obviously this depends on whether or not he takes a long term deal.

I agree with you.I am happy with the deal. I feel the Brewers needed to get this deal done with. Not that many lead off guys have the power that Weeks has in his toolbox.

He probably won't stay leadoff the duration of his contract

I had it on good authority:
My Guess
Four years, $36-38 million, with a $12m team option for 2015 with a buyout that increases the guaranteed value to $40m.

"good authority" = "benevolent dictator"?
Applying Simpsons and Star Wars quotes to Brewers discussions since 2009.
On second thought that looks bad. It's more of a philosophical question.
I think Kyle does an excellent job with this site, and it is very much an open forum. Not only open, but productive, as he helps weed out the people who would make it miserable.

Wow, you're quite the sage.

Comparing this to the Uggla deal
It works out at around $12million less over 5 years but with an out clause that if he is still injury prone that stops the deal after 4.
Considering that he is 3 years younger but with a lesser track record I think it looks a pretty good deal for the Brewers.
Aside from the Kotsay deal
it’s like I’m cheering for a Bizarro Brewers team with a front office that keeps making good decisions. Weird.

Even if he starts to suck
we’ll be paying him less than we payed Suppan (4yr/$42MIL).
I approve.

Yes, that was another terrible contract
So who do we have locked up for the next 4 years? Braun, Gallardo, Weeks…who else?

No one else who's FA-eligible
but they’ll still have the rights to quite a few players like McGehee, Dickerson, Axford, Gamel, Narveson and Braddock.

Hart is also locked up

you know who is also locked up for at least three years?
OJ, Phil Spector and probably Roman Polanski

5th year option
According to McCalvy, it becomes guaranteed if Weeks gets 1200 PAs in 2013-2014 or 600 PAs in 2014.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
TH has all the details...
2011: $4 million signing bonus plus $3.5 million salary.
2012: $10 million,
2013: $10 million salary
2014: $11 million salary
In 2015, Weeks will get an $11.5 million salary if he has 600 plate appearances in 2014 or a combined 1200 plate appearances in 2013 and 2014. He must also finish the 2014 season healthy.
If Weeks does not meet those criteria — and injuries would play a role in that — the Brewers can void that option. They would have to pay Weeks $1 million if he has 400 plate appearances in 2014, however.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
So I guessed 4/$40 guaranteed
It’s actually 4/$39.5. My apologies.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
I wasn't trying to correct you
Just provided a link to the specific details.
4/40 was my guess as well.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
ah, plus 1 with 400 PA in 2014 makes it 39.5.
Is that what you were getting at?

It really is sad
That Scott Boras is Prince’s agent. There would be so much promise & potential for this team if he were locked up for a couple more years…
by Saberilliterate on Feb 16, 2011 5:26 PM CST reply actions
two way street
Prince hired Boras for a reason, and Boras is the best agent in the game for a reason as well. Cant really blame Boras here.
He wasn't.
He said it was sad, not that it was Boras’ fault. I don’t read any blame at all in that comment, just lamentation over the situation. Nobody I know really blames Fielder for wanting to get as much money as possible. They just wish things were different.
And I still think Boras is an a-hole, but it’s not because Fielder hired him.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Feb 16, 2011 7:11 PM CST up reply actions 3 recs
What you said
I don’t blame Prince for wanting to become a free agent. But the fact that SBoras is his agent means that he didn’t sign a deal a few years ago that would have bought out his first year or two of free agency.
But enough about that – as a fan, I have to enjoy 2011 before worrying about 2012
by Saberilliterate on Feb 16, 2011 7:39 PM CST up reply actions 2 recs
So is Fielder an a-hole too
If Boras is because of this contract issue, then Fielder should be as well.

To put Weeks' deal into perspective, Jose Bautista just signed a 5 year/$65 million deal with and option for 6 years/$78 million
Makes it look like a steal for the Brewers.
Ryan Braun: He loves it. -- Four pitchers in history with 8.5+ WAR and <250 IP seasons: Greg Maddux (age 29), Pedro Martinez (age 28), Roger Clemens (age 27), Zack Greinke (age 25).
The Blue Jays just unloaded one regrettable deal this offseason.
apparently they did it to make room for the next one.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
My thoughts exactly
With Weeks, there are no doubts he can put up the numbers if he can stay on the field. With Bautista, there are.

geez.

it seems like alot but its really not that bad of a deal…the guy figured it out…he was a completely different player at the end of 09 and all of 2010…

I get the fangraphs logic and all
I still think the deal is dumb for Toronto because they won’t be competing for the AL East for a couple years (at least) and by that point Bautista will be in his mid-30s and taking up significant payroll. Why not have payroll flexibility for when they are making a run?
Like Cameron mentioned, could they have gotten a better deal if they would have negotiated after this year? Possibly.
I’m sure it makes sense from a win value or whatever – just don’t think it makes sense for the Blue Jays.
Get a ife broseph
End of 2009?
Didn’t he only play in the first month and a half of that season?
