The difference between Zach Greinke’s social phobia and what might appear to be fashionable insouciance cannot be overstated. The new Brewer ace will always struggle with a very real and debilitating disorder that made quitting a distinct possibility. I imagine he would trade his condition in for a somewhat smoother existance with no regrets whatsoever.
Fans may feel attracted to his misanthropic comments, glorify what they refer to as brutal honesty, and relate a little to his attitude, but this is not some juvenile rebel, hateful stance toward 99% of the world. This is about Greinke's survival and is the furthest thing from glamorous or cool. He thankfully lacks the Sheffied-like arrogance to go psychotic when the phobias strike. He has to walk away and take cover.
The fact that Greinke requested the media to leave him alone except on specific days reflects his maturity level. He’s paid his dues, learned his limitations and designed a strategy to combat what previously sent him spiralling downward.
I hope Milwaukee respects his wishes, leaves him alone, and lets him do that 2009 thing.
