Who needs depth.
We’ve got one of the worse regular starters in baseball and a 76 year old guy to play short, we’re all set.

I know... not very well
But would he really be worse than Betancourt?
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I think that's the key phrase... "extended periods of time"
They would only need Almonte to play SS long enough until they called someone up from the minors… and that’s assuming they lose two IFs on the team.

provided Betencourt is struggling that is
otherwise, they might just bring up a pure hitter…whoever that is. Gamel?

Why would they ever bring Cruz up to replace Almonte?
totally different positions, totally different offensive players.

Almonte plays the same positions as Kotsay.
They might want someone who can play key positions well defensively.
Right,
but they wouldn’t keep Counsell and Cruz on the roster together, I wouldn’t think.

Well, they already have two backup outfielders, and three if you count Almonte.
They have one backup infielder. Generally, I think it’s best to have two guys who can play outfield and two who can competently play several infield positions.
Almonte can play the IF if they lose two guys before they have a chance to call someone up from the minors

I'm starting to see the lack of organizational depth now.
Looks like the Brewers will have to draft heavy on the college players this year.
Not that that has panned out lately.

I never thought too much of Cruz but they have to have another ML-caliber shortstop
I wouldn’t be surprised to see them get one in the next week or two.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
I'm in the same boat
I don’t think Cruz is good and was fine with him off the MLB roster, but he was nice for emergency depth. Its pretty risky to go into the season with no one on the farm that can fill-in for a short time if necessary.
I guess there is always the trade market and you can hope to find a Felipe Lopez type player if absolutely needed, but lots of uncertainty there.

Edwin Maysonet could play short for a week or two if need be.
And if anyone had needed Cruz for longer than that, they’re already in trouble.
Now that's great tasting chicken!

Good point
I don’t know a lot about Maysonet. Just looking at their career lines, it looks like he’s a slightly older version of Cruz.
Get a ife broseph
Pretty ballsy for a kid with only 56 games to his credit
He may only get one shot at this now, if he doesn’t catch fire with the Rangers, he may wind up like Brad “0 for 21” Nelson. (checks where Brad Nelson is playing now……let’s see……TEXAS RANGERS????!!!!)

Brad Nelson was a dude in 2009 who went 0 for 21 at bats to start the year, Then when the Brewers tried to send him down to Triple A he refused and has yet to make it back to the big leagues. He’s a minor leaguer with Texas now.

I get that everyone wants to be in the bigs, but there are so many guys who do this, leave a team instead of trying to impress in the minor leagues again only to never make the bigs. I’m saying Cruz had a chance to work on what needed to be worked on. Yeah he’s got a deal with the Rangers, but if he doesn’t play great, he’s gonna be right back in the minors again.

Kinda my point
Counsell is only gonna be around for what, like another decade, what makes Cruz think he has a better chance of making it with the Rangers then he does with the Brewers?

Because
he already knows what the brewers think about him, and might be able to give another team a better impression

That's a big might
That’s why it’s ballsy. The Brewers would have released him if they didn’t like him. He just didn’t show them enough to make the 40 man. He could very well not make the Ranger 40 man either.

Now on Twitter: @RockstarTroy
Eh, he gets paid the same either way
and maybe he didn’t like the organization… free agency goes both way.

What's the O/U on Andrus' HR over the next 5 years? 10?

Ballsy meaning dumb.
You choose to move from an org who has Yuni as its starting SS to one with Elvis Andrus?
It’s fine to move on but you’re heading the wrong direction, Luis.

I'd rather play in Round Rock than Nashville.
Given that I’m never gonna play about AAA on a regular basis.

That's kind of what I don't understand
He was clearly the first player to be called up in the case of a need for a shortstop in Milwaukee. How is he doing any better by being the first back up in Texas? Maybe he’s just done with the Brewers organization and sick of Nashville and wants to be somewhere else even if he won’t be in the majors this year.
I think that's a big part of it
He didn’t seem too happy last season with his “racist” comment about Macha, so he probably made up his mind that if he didn’t make the team this year, he was going to walk.
He had a decent ST, so he probably feels that he’d get a better opportunity elsewhere.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
He's moving to an organiation without a Deity backing up SS.
