Game Thread #-1: Brewers @ Padres
48 hours from now we'll all be talking about regular season baseball as the Brewers and Reds open the 2011 season. For now, though, it's time to say farewell to Arizona with one last game against the Padres.
Follow the jump for today's pitching matchup, lineup and more!
Aaron Harang (5.12 ERA this spring) is in his first season with the Padres after spending the last eight as a member of the Reds. In fact, Harang is near the top of the leaderboard in several categories for the 120 year old franchise:
| Stat | Place | # |
| Strikeouts | 1125 | 6th |
| Starts | 213 | 19th |
| Innings Pitched | 1343 | 24th |
Today will be Harang's sixth start as a Padre. In his last appearance on Thursday he worked five innings against the Rangers, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out two.
He'll face Randy Wolf (9.50 ERA this spring), who is also making his sixth start. This has been said a lot lately but Wolf could really use a strong outing: He's allowed 19 runs in 18 innings this spring, including four in 5.1 innings of work against the Angels on Thursday. Opposing batters are hitting .347 off of him in Cactus League play.
Rickie Weeks 2B
Carlos Gomez CF
Ryan Braun LF
Prince Fielder 1B
Casey McGehee 3B
Mark Kotsay RF
Yuniesky Betancourt SS
Wil Nieves C
Randy Wolf P
Weather:
The Brewers should make sure they savor one last taste of Arizona weather today: temperatures should be in the low-to-mid 80's. By the time they land in Cincinnati tonight it's expected to be in the mid-30's.
Coverage:
No radio or TV today, but the game will be broadcast online and available via Gameday Audio.
Enjoy the game!

You're my soup man, bro.
You know this.

I'm watching via Gameday...
It has Hudson grounding out with the throw going from Betancourt to Weeks to Fielder, but Bartlett safe at 2B.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Didn't sound like he screwed it up though
maybe shouldn’t have thrown to 2nd (not sure), but they didn’t say it was muffed or anything.

Gggrrrr!
Not a big fan of the NL Central Standings in the column to the right. I know its alphabetical order but, nonetheless, it appears to be taunting the Brewers. Still, hopefully in a week or so things will have resumed their righful order with the Crew at the top and Cubs at or near the bottom…

They should give us the win they left off for most of the offseason
Forget if it was this year or last year, but they owe us!

This song is far more obnoxious than the "why do they race"
song, which was previously the most obnoxious thing in the history of man. Perhaps it’s time to destroy Klements once and for all.

I don't know if I'd call it "bad"... more like "meh".
I’m sure there are some really bad no-name brand stuff out there.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Fair enough
I’m advocating against “brands” and “no-name” brands. As far as brands go, it’s probably not terrible.
Twitterize me: @mykenk
I know we've discussed this before, but...
What brats do you recommend? I usually get Johnsonville, which I think is better than Klements, but I’m sure there are better ones out there.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Nothing better than Johnsonville as far as commercially available
Boiled in beer and thrown on the grill. I’ll take a perfect beer brat over almost every other food, if not every other food.
That's what I usually do
Have you ever had their beer brats before? I usually get their regular ones, so I didn’t know if the beer ones actually tasted any different.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Yeah, Johnsonville I'd say is the best
in terms of brands, but if you find a good butcher shop, you can’t really beat it. Little more pricey, but so totally worth it.

I have no idea where to find a butcher shop around me
let alone a good one.

Pernat's
They’re so old-school they don’t even have a website. Just a little-bitty store in Johnson Creek. They’re a great stop between Madison and Milwaukee if you’re coming from the west—completely worth it. My old employer used to hold as many brat frys as they could schedule, and it was always with Pernats. Highly, highly recommend them.
Thanks
But I live just outside of Milwaukee, so that would be about 45 minutes in the wrong direction.

It’s clearly better than this atrocity.

I just noticed that that's in the commercial.

So, this is your fault?
Going forward, you aren’t allowed to leave the game. :)

Are we assuming Wolf is playing Possum?
Because his Spring has been extremely disappointing. At least he’s a #4 and not a #2 this year.
He didn't start pitching well last season until the second half of the season
Maybe he’s getting all those bad starts out of the way now.
Besides, you’re missing the important point… he’s undefeated (so far) in ST.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Yikes!
Ugh first there was issues with Greinke and his bball skills then Marcum has shoulder problems not it appears Wolf feels bad for the other team every start I know its only ST but this is nicht gut for our killer rotation

By the sixth/seventh it’ll probably be Austin Stockfisch at catcher, too.

try to tie this game up? He hasn’t been pitching that well, why let him bat!?

1) There's probably only 1-2 minor league guys in the pen today.
2) Letting Wolf reach his pitch count today is probably more important.

re: Wolf
75% of his pitches were in the strike zone, compared to about 49% during the season last year. He probably wants this game over as much as we do.
so you are saying he is simply working on something or whatever
and this is somewhat intentional. I will accept this silver lining

The only reason I'm concerned about Wolf is because of his slow start last year.
Really would’ve liked to see him put a couple of nice outings together this spring and show that he’s not going to suck in April again.

Okay, Miller Lite needs to go back to the drawing board.
All of their current ad campaigns make me want to burn the marketing department to the ground.

I would not have predicted Heath Bell and John Axford appearances this late in the final spring game.
Apparently Bud Black and Ron Roenicke want to get everything they can out of this game.

He pitched this weekend, but I don't recall which day.
He and Loe both pitched back-to-back days.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
That's still two days rest
Considering he missed a couple of outings during ST, maybe they wanted him to get one final outing before the season started?
Plus, Opening Day isn’t until Thursday, so that would’ve meant he would’ve had at least 5 days off.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I figured he'd pitch

You were too busy focusing on the negatives?
Between injuries and less-than-stellar outings by the rest of the pitching staff, I can see why his outings were overlooked.
