He definitely will be used as a PH
I don’t think “soley.”
Move makes sense. They could have DFA’d a catcher for Lucroy and done a Boggs-Reed swap, but then they’d have to send Boggs down again as soon as Hart is ready to come back.
This move buys them a little more time, especially if Lucroy is a little slow to get up to full-speed.

isn't Kottaras Wolfs catcher also?
I have not been able to watch either of Wolfs starts but that was the deal last year.
If that is the case he would catch at least once every 5 days and still be a PH right?
"It's a joke. It's all a joke.
He might be, but that shouldn't matter
Wolf isn’t good enough to have the lineup shifted around him. If they are facing a left handed pitcher, Kottaras shouldn’t be in the lineup even if Wolf is pitching for the Brewers.

I have a theory about that
Kottaras can’t throw anyone out, so they pair him with the pitcher who has the best pickoff move, in an attempt to hold runners on.

IIRC
wasn’t Wolf bitching (maybe not publicly) about having to pitch to Lucroy last year? I seem to remember one game where Jean Luc made a trip to the mound every other batter because they couldn’t get on the same page with the signs, and the next game, GeoKot was in there.
I’m not smart enough to look at the other stuff and do anything but drool and mumble.
Yeah, i think that was how it began, but I was surprised to see it again this year.
Maybe Wolf just let Roenicke know that he deals better with the Klott

I think that was when Jean Luc had just come up
He was green as grass you would like to think he would have a better handle on the process now
"It's a joke. It's all a joke.
So much of pitching is mental
I’d rather give Wolf a catcher he’s comfortable with than someone new regardless of how much Lucroy has progressed or how much Nieves regresses to his 2009 form.
Gord and Doug want more time to determine which deficiency they are more comfortable with
Kotarras’s glove, or Nieves’ bat.

Plus
As Supertramp stated, it’ll give them time to slowly ease Lucroy into the everyday lineup.
Reed wasn’t doing much on the bench… particularly since they already have two other lefty bat options for the OF (Morgan and Kotsay).
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
is this like
the packers keeping 3 FBs? because you never know when you will need them?
Notsay!
oh this makes me sad in this situation

in fairness
Reed doesn’t have a hit yet. He’s a pretty logical demotion, especially as with Morgan around his defensive skillset isn’t impressive enough to merit a start. Then again neither is Kotsay’s (over at OV or Brewers.com I saw someone comment that Kotsay is good enough to play right, but Gomez isn’t good enough for center. Wha???? I guess that’s what I get for looking upward at the daytime sky), but we all know Kotsay won’t get cut until he has an actual error or three and/or sustains a <.200 BA for a month+.

Yeah I understand that the move is logical
just that with Kotsay on the team he is actually getting playing time, while I wouldnt worry about seeing reed too much.

Good Move
Lucroy will still only be able to catch 4-5 games per week for a fews weeks, so having three catchers isn’t bad. Plus Nieves provides a much needed right-handed pinch hitter. Even with Almonte, it is a weakness for the Brewers to have mainly all lefty pinch-hitters because it is easier for opposing managers to plan out their bullpen. Hopefully Reed will be willing to go to Nashville and play there.
Um
Nieves provides a much needed right-handed pinch hitter
Have you seen his hitting? I’ll take Gallardo for my pinch hitter.

This.
I’d love to see a “hitting” contest between Nieves & Chad Moeller. It would be hilarious.

never say that name again
he is the backup catcher who shall not be named.

Has Nieves ever hit for the cycle?
That’s right.

I agree
Nieves’ career line: .227/276/.297
He is an absolutely atrocious hitter. The Brewers would literally be better off with Gallardo pinch hitting.
Or Wolf...or Narveson.

Might be Almonte with how he’s hitting right now. One homer then nothing? We also have Parra and Hawkins returning soon. So probably Kinsler and maybe Estrada for them. Or Mitre.

I don't think they'll drop down to 4 outfielders and 3 catchers
Kinsler and Estrada are on their way out.
That's my guess too
They don’t really need three lefties in the bullpen.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Am I missing something, or isn't Kintzler already in Nashville?
I thought he went down when Estrada got called up.

Ah, You are correct
My bad. Then probably Estrada and Green or Mitre.

Not to imply Kotsay is an outfielder, but
1. Braun
2. Hart
3. Gomez
4. Morgan
5. Kotsay
would still be 5 OF if they demote Almonte. They’re just short a double-emergency SS.
aww Kot it out

My guess is that it'll be Nieves
Kottaras hasn’t been horrible behind the plate this season and is a better hitter.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I guess this answers my question of whether or not they actually bring him up when he is healed…

I guess it makes sense...
…assuming Hart will be back shortly. It sounds like he might been a week or two away. They mentioned in one of the pregame broadcast that Hart has been taking BP and is having no issues.
Jeremy Reed wasn't playing
wasn’t going to play, and didn’t look like he deserved to play. Kottaras essentially takes over his lefty pinch-hit duties, and he provides an extra catcher if you need to lift Nieves for offense. When Luc is back to full strength and playing every day, I’m pretty sure Nieves will be the odd man out.
"didn’t look like he deserved to play"
You can tell by seven PH ABs?
I don’t disagree with the move, but I don’t think anyone can really judge him fairly based on what little he has played.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
It's not totally fair, but his approach was pretty bad
Fly ball to center
Groundout to 1st
Groundout to 2nd
Groundout to 1st
Groundout to 2nd
Strikeout
Strikeout
His approach just wasn’t good and he wasn’t going to be given the time to try and figure things out against MLB pitching.

I partially wonder if Kottaras saved himself with his game yesterday.
I believe he had a couple of hits, and then threw that runner out in the 9th.
I doubt it, but it certainly didn't hurt.
They didn’t really need Reed on the roster. With Morgan and Kotsay, he wasn’t going to be starting anytime soon. Plus, this gives Lucroy time to transition back into the starting lineup.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Reed will benefit from being an everyday starting in the minors. Having young guys only getting 4 or 5 at bats a week hurt thier development.

Plus Reed is one of those guys who doesn’t seem to be able to catch fire.

Wild Pitch
I don’t know if they called it a wild pitch on Loe or a passed ball on Kott, but the 7th was pretty rough for him behind the plate.
It was definitely a WP
It was a fastball that somehow ended up bouncing in the LH batter’s box. That wasn’t on George.
"In Wisconsin, New Year's Eve is just regular drinking with funny hats on" ~Lewis Black
I doubt it
The catchers are familiar with all the pitchers, so I don’t think it matters much if he catches three pitchers in one inning or three pitchers in one game.
