I like the cut of Roenicke's jib

Fill the lineup with good players? There’s no challenge in that! Fielder and Braun get bored when other hitters are in the lineup.

Gallardo should be hitting 2nd today.

Right handed pitcher, let's check my outfielders to decide who should start....

Gomez .250/.295/.205
Kotsay .304/.250/.200
Morgan .522/.762/.476

Hmmm…Gotta go with Gomez and Kotsay

Nevermind sample size!

Take any sample size

Rolling 3-year, career, or 2011….none of them would indicate Morgan should ride the bench.

Either Roenicke is basing this on numbers against Marquis (which is stupid), or he’s trying to show confidence in Gomez. Either way, it takes a lot of balls to sit the hot player in the bench for no apparent reason.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 17, 2011 9:52 AM CDT up reply actions

Career vs. RHP

Morgan (career): .312/.364/.394, 337 wOBA
Kotsay (career): .277/.340/.412, .328 wOBA
Gomez (career): .251/.296/.346, .285 wOBA

Ryan Braun: He loves it. -- Four pitchers in history with 8.5+ WAR and <250 IP seasons: Greg Maddux (age 29), Pedro Martinez (age 28), Roger Clemens (age 27), Zack Greinke (age 25).

Is that a big enough sample size for you Charlie?

It's almost like he wants to see if Morgan's going to freak out.

Better in April than August, maybe?

I’ll acknowledge that I don’t really know what I’m talking about, but I don’t really get this at all.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Apr 17, 2011 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions

especially last game

key RBI pinch hit situation, tie game NO MORGAN
11 innings total NO MORGAN

Other than that, it’s two guys one going 4/20, the other 2/17 getting playing time over 10/21 with 4 xbh and this smile

by mladwig0 on Apr 17, 2011 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Guess it's not vs. Pitcher numbers

Morgan vs Marquis (16 PA) .429/.500/.571

Gomez vs. Marquis – er, um….never

But, matchup decisions are stupid, as I mentioned. Just wanted to point out that there’s no reason to think Roenicke went based on the pitcher.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 17, 2011 9:55 AM CDT up reply actions

I certainly hope you're not trying to justify using a 26 PA sample size.

It looks like you are by backtracking and talking about a 3 year sample size.

Why does sample size matter so much to everyone?

You go with the hot hand. If Morgan was getting the starts he should be getting, then you can get a better sample size. How can Morgan get a bigger sample size if he isn’t getting at bats? Who cares if this is only a hot streak? WE NEED RUNS! We need hitters. If Morgan starts to regress, then give the job back to Gomez or Kotsay.

You wanna talk about sample size

Well, Gomez has had twice as many at bats, so let’s base both off of 21 at bats. That would be Gomez with 4 hits, and Morgan with 10.

The hot hand is a terrible way to pick starters

Hot streaks eventually end and what a guy did the day before or the week before is much less predictive of future performance than what a guy has done over his career.

Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.

What, that you had your mind made up about Morgan

and now you’re using small sample sizes to try to say ’I’m right’?

I NEVER said that I didn’t think he should start in this game, just that you can’t run around touting a 26 AB sample size.

Its one thing to use the small sample

and then go and find a bigger sample and use it instead. Its the internet equivalent of ’I’m not going to actually admit that I shouldn’t use that sample, but this bigger one makes my point too, so I’ll use that’

Remember its a double header

Not that it is completely unreasonable to expect a guy to play 18 straight innings (I’m sure Braun and Fielder will today), but I don’t mind Roenicke’s decision here, assuming he will start Tony Plush in game 2. If he is only going to play one game, I would rather it be the game where we will most likely need more offense, with Estrada pitching.

The double header is a good opportunity to get guys PA while also keeping fresh guys in the lineup for game two. Just something to think about, as much as I would like to see Nyjer play both games.

I feel like Roenicke is being diplomatic.

He knows the bad blood between Morgan and the Nationals, and so to avoid any issues RR has refused to even let Morgan in as a pinch hitter.

Roenicke may be concerned in the opposite direction too.

He may not want Morgan getting booed by the fans or plunked by the Nats.

But yeah, I don’t agree with the decision, you play baseball to win, not to make friends on opposing teams.

I knew if I came here you guys

would be talking about it. The ‘buzz’ (my 2 followers and myself) on Twitter this AM is 2 things:

1) Plush is not with the MKE program and is a clubhouse problem.

2) Plush is actually Plush on Twitter and has been Tweeting during games.

Conspiracy theory abound for sure. However, there is no grassy knoll, the team isn’t from Roswell, and I am pretty sure Tony Plush had nothing to do with 9/11.

Any thoughts here as to why Morgan isn’t playing?

No big mystery

I think Roenicke is just staying loyal to the guys he had all the way through spring training. If Morgan continues to make the most of his opportunities, he’ll either work his way into the lineup or the Brewers will trade him for some other piece when Hart returns.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 17, 2011 10:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Brewers will certainly keep him as a 4th OF

I think he’s viewed as a late-season backup and now we just have a whole in RF, no idea why he’s not being played. Any argument you could cook up sounds fishy with Morgan hitting 10/21 and the two others combined going 6/37. Not even mentioning Morgan’s speed, either.

by mladwig0 on Apr 17, 2011 10:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Something has to be going on

vs Marquis:
Gomez .250/.295/.205
Kotsay .304/.250/.200
Morgan .522/.762/.476

vs RHP:
Morgan (career): .312/.364/.394, 337 wOBA
Kotsay (career): .277/.340/.412, .328 wOBA
Gomez (career): .251/.296/.346, .285 wOBA

There is staying loyal and then there is being loyal to a fault. Ride the hot hand of Morgan, especially when the numbers scream to do it. Insanely high BABIP, but why would you not stick with Morgan until he hangs a couple of 0-4’s? He has a chip on his shoulder and has something to prove. Both can be powerful motivators. In 2009 Plush and Braun had the same 4.9 WAR. Why can’t he do it again?

Because there have been tweets while Morgan was on the base paths…from the dugout, maybe, but if he was tweeting from the base paths there would be video/photographic evidence.

Also, the real Plush being the twitter account means one of two things.

1) He makes up conversations between himself, Roenicke, and Melvin that never happen.

OR

2) Roenicke said the word Plushdamentals

EZ

he has a program to hold back his tweets until about 2 minutes after he goes to bat. If he’s not back to press a button in time, a tweet goes out that alludes to him being on base. If he hits the cancel button in time, nothing goes out. #plushdeadmanswitchprogrammingdementals
