Hawkins activated, McClendon optioned, Kottaras outrighted, Greinke to AAA
As if we didn't have enough to discuss today, here are four roster moves:
- LaTroy Hawkins has been activated off the DL.
- Mike McClendon has been sent back to Nashville.
- George Kottaras has been outrighted off of the 40 man roster and sent to Nashville.
- Zack Greinke's rehab assignment has been moved from Brevard County to Nashville.
With the moves the Brewers have 24 players on the active roster and 38 on the 40 man roster.

I think most people prefer Kottaras
The Brewers front office didn’t, and that seemed obvious all year.
Free Mike Rivera!
Ryan Braun: He loves it. -- Four pitchers in history with 8.5+ WAR and <250 IP seasons: Greg Maddux (age 29), Pedro Martinez (age 28), Roger Clemens (age 27), Zack Greinke (age 25).

With only 24 on the active roster
Do you think Greinke will only make 2 rehab starts and rejoin the team on Monday?

No, they'll make a move before that.
If nothing else, Marcum needs to be reinstated from the bereavement list.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
Oh, yes
I forgot about that.

doubt it
I would assume he is only going to throw about 60 pitches in his next time out so I imagine he will have to make 1 more start in the minors.
Wrote this in the other thread
Disagree with Nieves over Kottaras, but it won’t matter that much if Lucroy is healthy.
I hate only having 12 position players, especially if Morgan isn’t full speed.

Why keep Nieves?
I suppose it doesn’t matter much considering Nieves will hardly get any playing time now that Lucroy is back. But still, what does he bring to the table? Especially considering Kottaras has gotten better defensively since last year.
My goodness.
I do too for a backup
but considering the offensive skills of our bench…

I don't mind Nieves
Although I would have rather seen Kottaras stick around, I realize that there is way more to this decision than we can see as fans. I’m guessing a lot of it is having his defense. It’s possible the pitchers really like having nieves behind the plate and that swayed Roenicke’s decision.
Actually
It sounds like it came down to who could be sent down to the minors without being claimed by another team.
Kottaras could be sent down to the minors without being put onto waivers, while Nieves has enough service time to also refuse a minor league assignment.

Did someone say...Wood?

why would we need wood?
we already have a big hitting 4C player with bad defense in Gamel.

Greinke's AAA start will be this Sunday
and he’s planned to make another one the next week. http://www.tennessean.com/article/20110410/SPORTS04/104100367/2073/Brewers-will-send-Greinke-Sounds-rehab-start?odyssey=mod_sectionstories
If he stays on track, he’ll start May 3 at the Braves, then again in the series finale at the Cards on Sunday the 8th.
Co-worker is going to Nashville on vacation this weekend
On his way out the door a short while ago, he told me that he had tickets to the Stars game. I mentioned that Greinke is slated to start, and he couldn’t believe it. He said it’s hard to believe that $12 gets him his first look at Greinke.

I hope he has tickets to the Sounds
Seeing the AA squad won’t help him see Greinke

Yes
Manager Ron Roencike (sic) has said he wants Greinke to make at least three Minor League starts before the Brewers consider reinstating him. That means he would pitch again April 29 for Nashville before a potential May 4 Brewers debut in Atlanta.

Why purposely put yourself a man down?
It’s only 1 game assuming Marcum is activated on Saturday, but why not keep an extra arm or bat around just in case?
Maybe airfare is too expensive Saturday?

Good luck George...
but my well-wishing does not go so far as hoping you catch on with another MLB team. Too much offensive ability at a premium position. Maybe you’d like to work on your pitch-blocking skills in Nashville?
He's not going anywhere except to Nashville.
He doesn’t have enough service time to reject being sent to the minors, and he must have had an option left because I don’t think he was exposed to waivers.

I'm confused
The biggest news is that catcher George Kottaras has been assigned outright to Class AAA Nashville. That means he cleared waivers and the Brewers say he will join Nashville on Saturday.
Doesn’t that mean he would’ve had to been on waivers prior to yesterday? How did that happen without anyone reporting it?

Often teams don't report who gets placed on waivers
From what I have heard, almost everyone on teams that are no longer in playoff contention are placed on waivers after the trading deadline.

Smells like another move's coming...
Two open spots on the 40 and at least one superfluous position player on the 25, and not many obvious choices to replace them.
So much for nothing to talk about on the off day.
McCalvy says the Gentleman is probably hitting the DL tomorrow
…with Boggs coming up to replace him.
Then Marcum takes the last open spot on the 25-man when he comes off the bereavement list to pitch Saturday.
fka "warwick5s"
They'll still only have 24 players for tomorrow's game
Boggs is probably already on his way up to Milwaukee (if he’s not already here), so he should be ready to play tomorrow.
They wouldn’t really need to put Morgan on the DL until Saturday when Marcum comes back.

Article states they have to make the roster move now
Marcum is returning to Milwaukee Friday which apparently means he’s automatically off Bereavement leave so the Brewers had no choice, but to make the move today. Presumably, the Brewers will have 25 men on the roster including Marcum for the Astros game Friday night.
Why not Erick Almonte?
Especially if we knew we were going to call up Boggs, Almonte is the most replaceable and least valuable Brewer bench player.
Almonte is capable of playing
Almonte will be gone when Hart comes back on Monday, anyway. Either Boggs or a relief pitcher will go down when Morgan comes off the DL. This move also has the positive side effect of ensuring Morgan will be fully healed when he comes back. He won’t be pushing himself since he can’t play for another 10 days.
he can play minor league games before then
by PagsBrewCrew on Apr 22, 2011 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions
can't play major league baseball, then
Maybe he does feel the need to be out there playing any baseball right away, but I would think he’s more likely to take an extra few days of rest at the expense of two extra games in Nashville compared to pushing himself to get into two games with Milwaukee at 80%.
