Mitch Stetter to DL (left hip injury), Mike Rivera called up, Sean Green designated for assignment
Now that's a weird collection of roster moves.

They say hip injury...
but axford was just tweeting about an unnamed teammate who claimed the bathroom smelled of blueberry eggos and he wanted to eat the urinal cakes. Just sayin’.

WTF?
Maybe they are trading Nieves? (please oh please oh please…)

He said they weren't in on the Nyjer Morgan talks too, didn't he?

I would take that any day of the week.

Something has to happen yet
2 down and one up = open spot. Re-sign Carlos Corporan?
I believe Green was only on 40-man roster, not 25-man roster.
Stetter to DL to clear 25 man spot.
Green DFA to clear 40 man spot.
Rivera takes both 25 man and 40 man spot.

Guess I wasn't thinking
I assumed to be DFA’ed you had to be in the majors, and thereby on the 25-man. I also assumed Rivera was on the 40-man, which was probably also off the mark.
Rivera was a Spring Training invitee
so he never was placed on the 40 man.

This is pretty stupid
If they just want a righty bat call up Katin or something. It’s unbelievable to me that they’re wasting 2 roster spots on backup catcher because the guy they want as a backup can’t hit. And they know it, because they brought in another catcher to pinch-hit for him. The difference between the best and worst defensive catchers ever is about 20 runs a season, I have a hard time believing that the better defense minus the terrible hitting and the loss of a roster spot helps the Brewers come out ahead.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
I think it will be much more clear on Friday when Braddock is back
Despite what Melvin says, I really think this is a sign that Nieves is DFA’d when Braddock is ready.
If Braddock doesn’t replace a catcher I’ll be both surprised, and upset.
Get a ife broseph
On the bright side, if Rivera hits well in his callup they might be more willing to dump Nieves.
Ryan Braun: He loves it. -- Four pitchers in history with 8.5+ WAR and <250 IP seasons: Greg Maddux (age 29), Pedro Martinez (age 28), Roger Clemens (age 27), Zack Greinke (age 25).
I don't think it's that bad
Rivera is probably a better option as a PH since he has MLB experience and obviously doesn’t need regular playing time to still be productive. Plus, Nashville won’t miss him too much.
I also think this is all temporary until Braddock comes back.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
This is such a load of horseshit.
That’s about all I have to say about that.

I have a feeling he pissed in RR's coffee at some point
On the other side, Nieves brought in a Keurig and a wide selection of K-cups.
I hate those fucking things.

but K cups do indeed suck
by PagsBrewCrew on May 17, 2011 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't
and no, but I can easily deal with lack of convenience in favor of taste.
K cups are basically already-brewed and stored on the shelf. It’s the “instant coffee” of our generation, and just about as bad-tasting.
Hell, if I had a coffee grinder, I’d never buy anything other than whole beans, but pre-extracting the stuff just is begging for oxidation

Exactly
If he was hitting somewhat decently, he probably would’ve been the one called up.
He’s having a dreadful time in Nashville…
.175/.267/.175
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Another theory
Stetter can’t pitch, they need a replacement until Braddock is back on Friday.
Rivera been around the Org for a while and has a handshake agreement with Org that he’ll stay up for a couple days and not opt for FA when he’s taken off the 40 man, preserving options for other guys or preventing other guys from opting for FA when they are removed from roster.
Get a ife broseph
I am not sure the agreement is even needed
How many teams would really be jumping to sign Rivera?
BCB: Pointless Exercises in Devils Advocacy
BCB Fantasy Football League 2 Champ
Ok that is probably true,
but I would think he would rather stay in AAA Nashville with a brewers team that has shown they might bring him up vs going into an unknown situation on another team.
Of course I could be completely wrong as I in fact, not Mike Rivera

So how rare is it for a team to have a full bullpen with no lefties?
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
Yeah
although Axford, Hawkins and Loe aren’t too bad against lefties.
Too bad that two of them are only going to see lefties in the eighth and ninth.

Estrada probably a good option with his changeup
At least no more Stetter in the 8th inning, was getting shelled in that spot.

yeah he was completely shelled repeatedly

by PagsBrewCrew on May 17, 2011 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions
What do you mean?
I hated how they brought him in to start the 8th, he’d let a guy on and leave the next bullpen option with no outs and a runner on.
Basically hated every inning he pitched this year, unfair to single out the 8th I guess.

Yeah

eh
his OBP-against wasn’t awful. It was solidly in standard LOOGY territory. Much worse than we would love though

I think I covered this in a different thread recently...
Career stats against LHB…
Stetter – .194/.310/.335
Tony Fossas – .215/.285/.303
Ray King – 214/.284/.314
Steve Kline – .238/.318/.329
Mike Myers – .219/.304/.332
Jesse Orosco – .209/.287/.301
Brian Shouse – .213/.262/.330
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Brian Shouse is a god among men.
Ryan Braun: He loves it. -- Four pitchers in history with 8.5+ WAR and <250 IP seasons: Greg Maddux (age 29), Pedro Martinez (age 28), Roger Clemens (age 27), Zack Greinke (age 25).
Yeah, guys should be letting less than 30% of men on base to be given a roster spot
Assuming they are useless against RHB.
Arbitrary point, but over .300 and you start to get into territory where a RHP can do the same thing, while also getting RHB out.
Get a ife broseph
The problems with the guys you highlighted
Were that they were at one point in their careers, dominant LOOGYs and saw their numbers fall off as they got older. Stetter has never been as good as those guys were in their peaks.
Orosco was a work horse who pitched full innings. Ray King was dynamite the year the Cards went to the WS in 2004, seeing just as many RHB as LHB, who had a .236 OBP against him. Mike Meyers had a couple absolutely incredible years against LHB.
The problem in comparing Stetter to any of these guys is that he’s never had a completely dominant year in his career, there’s no reason to expect that he ever will.
Get a ife broseph
My intention was to show how Stetter compares to some of the best LOOGYs
not really say that he is at their level.
He seems to be a fairly decent LOOGY… not great, but not the worst either.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I think he's likely among the worst
He wasn’t good enough to be on the team last year, went to Nashville and got shelled.
Even in his absolute best couple years, his OBP was around .300, not a guy you really need on your team.
Though maybe he was actually injured and that led to his poor last 10 days or so — we’ll see.
Get a ife broseph
I don't know if you can include last season...
as he was working on his arm slot and facing RHBs in Nashville.
I can’t find a list of each team’s LOOGY, but I would guess that Stetter isn’t one of the worst.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Sure I'll include last year
If he was such a good LOOGY, why would he overall his delivery when he’s 29? You’d think they’d want to stick with what’s working (if it was working).
Get a ife broseph
According to TH
He was working on different arm slots to be effective against RHBs. Not sure if it was his idea or the team’s, but apparently it was to make him more than just a LOOGY.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I don't know...
My intention was to show how Stetter compares to some of the best LOOGYs
not really say that he is at their level.
Sure, you didn’t come out and say it, but you want us to look, at the numbers and be like “oh man, Stetter is right there with those guys!”
I’m with Supertramp on this, though.

More like, he's not the worst LOOGY out there and is effective.

IDK
his xFIP vs. LHB this season is 4.13. If you ask me, that’s unacceptable for a one out guy.

How does that number stack up against the rest of the league?
Looking just at the NL Central…
Astros – Abad – 3.18
Brewers – Stetter – 4.13
Cards – Miller – 5.83
Cubs – Grabow – 4.11
Pirates – Biemel – 3.01
Reds – Bray – 2.43
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
So there's one guy worse than him
Grabow has faced more RHB than LHB, he’s a mop up man, not a LOOGY
Get a ife broseph
I was guessing on Grabow
I don’t really know every team’s LOOGY. I looked at Sean Marshall too (xFIP of 1.43), but he too also has faced more RHB than LHB.
Since I don’t know who the other LOOGYs are in the league, I just stopped with the NL Central.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Good call, I seem to forget Estrada in the pen

Noob question:
Anyone know if there’s a way to filter fangraphs batter data for pinch hit appearances only? (Or any other website with raw data for that matter)
Baseball Reference has those splits for individual players
Ryan Braun: He loves it. -- Four pitchers in history with 8.5+ WAR and <250 IP seasons: Greg Maddux (age 29), Pedro Martinez (age 28), Roger Clemens (age 27), Zack Greinke (age 25).
Well I would guess they're going to see what Rivera can provide as a C more than a PH
Then if he seems like a good fit, bye bye Nieves.
And a side note, I know MLB has to approve all DL transactions but c’mon. Mitch Stetter just sucks, it’s nothing to do with a hip. Now-a-days when a guy struggles they say it’s because he was hurt and put him on the DL. Hurt with what? Stink-itis?

His performances lately, and last season tell me otherwise
He was very good in 2009 though.

I could be wrong
Looking around the NL Central (first number is OBP-against for 2011, second is career)…
Astros – Abad – .258/.242
Brewers – Stetter – .273/.310
Cards – Miller – .391/.313
Cubs – Grabow – .160/.328
Pirates – Biemel – .150/.316
Reds – Bray – .208/.312
Granted, I’m not positive if all these guys are being used as a LOOGY.

any time someone has a bad outing it's DL right away,
which makes me surprised that vin mazzaro got sent down and not put on DL. i would have guessed shoulder fatigue or “dead arm.”
