Slightly surprising move given Mitre's 3.27 ERA (though his peripherals didn't back it up)

FOILED AGAIN FROM FANSHOTTING.

I am quite surprised at this as well – so as it stands our only real long relievers now are estrada and difeli-…oh yeah.

You have to be quick to get a FanShot in

It’s a little surprising, but my guess is they’ll try to get him through waivers and bring him back once the 10 days have passed. Must be a little disappointing that he won’t face his old team.

It’s also a risky move, going with 11 pitchers for a week. Let’s hope it works. It will be nice to have a legit bat as a DH for a week. Meanwhile, in New York and Minneapolis, they’re scrambling for scouting on him.

I think it’s cool that they actually looked at peripherals rather than just ERA in keeping Dillard over Mitre.

I can.

Because Dillard can pitch every day like Loe can. He’s the “backup 8th inning guy.”

Mitre had a 3.27 ERA this season and a 3.33 ERA last season. That usually earns a three-year/$30 million contract from Melvin.

Even without looking at advanced stats...

Mitre had a paltry 3.8 K/9… easily the worst on the team. With our defense, we need as many Ks from our relievers as possible.

I'm pretty sure they look at strikeouts and walks at the very least

I’m guessing they don’t check his tERA and xFIP but I’d imagine they at least are conscious of the analytical value of numbers that are on the scoreboard at Miller Park.

This is also my question.

Which pitcher should they bring up, then?

They weren’t going to use DiFelice in a high-leverage situation, and Mitre was mostly a mop-up guy.

by Rubie Q on Jun 27, 2011 5:09 PM CDT up reply actions

What a conundrum!

It seems as if Melvin apologists and Roenicke apologists generally reside on the same side of the river. But I think we can say this is all Melvin’s fault. Because even if Ron said “hey, I like this guy, I want to keep him” its Melvin’s job to say “well, I’m glad to hear about your feelings, but he sucks.”

For the record, I have voted ‘approve’ on Melvin for the past 6 months or so of fan polls (since the Greinke trade), and have voted either disapprove or undecided on Roenicke for about the past month.

Stupid move. Painfully stupid. I don't care what Mitre's peripherals say, he's actually had value.

Kotsay is completely useless. There is no excuse for keeping this assbag on the team.

Embarrassing

As thrilled as I am to have Braddock and Gamel back I just dont understand how Kotsay is still on this team. Mitre is far from great but he at least can eat up some innings as a long man. I guess we will be trading him for some A ball scrub because there is no way he is going to be able to be stashed in AAA.

by bklynbrewcrew on Jun 27, 2011 5:08 PM CDT reply actions

They don't really need multiple long relievers

Estrada is currently in that role… and Dillard is capable of pitching multiple innings as well.

You should care

If he’s lucky, that means more than likely his luck is going to run out, and he’ll start pitching closer to his career numbers.

The only thing ERA and WHIP show is that he WAS good… not that he will be good going forward.

Yes

I am so excited that Gamel should be in the lineup when Im at the game. I do admit a little fear of wearing my Braun or Weeks jersey in that stadium but I am going to take the chance. The yankees fans for he most part are completely classless but I just hope they wont try to get violent with me.

After what happened to that poor Giants fan at Dodgers stadium I think we all have to be aware in other teams stadiums. Its very sad that society has become this crazy but it has.

11 pitchers not a huge issue

AL games require fewer pitchers, and Saito will be replacing a position player at the end of the week.

DPR will probably just have Gamel sit the bench anyway.

Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.

by cooper82 on Jun 27, 2011 6:11 PM CDT reply actions

So, TH just posted comments from Melvin.

I don’t like them. Here’s a quote.

Overall, in 76 games, Gamel was batting .321 with 18 home runs and 58 runs batted in, with a .380 on-base percentage and .577 slugging percentage. With the DH being used in the next six games in New York and Minnesota, he provides another bat for the Brewers’ lineup.

"He’s swinging the bat very well right," said Melvin. "We’re facing a couple of lefties over the next six games but it still will help to have another bat. We think we’ll be OK with one less pitcher but if something happens we can call one up."

What I get from that is Gamel will start some, but not all, of the interleague games at DH. Please tell me I’m wrong.

Makes no sense

Gamel has shown all throughout his minor league career that he can hit lefties. Its obvious that Morgan and Kotsay cant hit lefties and the thought of Wilson starting instead of Gamel also makes little sense.

by bklynbrewcrew on Jun 27, 2011 6:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Eh, it'll probably be a Josh Wilson start for Weeks again

RRR has been pretty good at keeping Morgan/Kotsay out of the lineup against LHP. Possibly some value in resting Weeks if you want to look at it that way.

I think he's saying,

“Sure, we have to face some lefties, but I don’t care.” Especially with the short porch in Yankee, we’ll need Gamel in the lineup, no matter who is pitching.

He's at least better than the other DH options on the roster

Would you rather have Wilson, Counsell, Kotsay, or Gomez DH? Only bench player I’d want to see DH is Kottaras.

I am going to say this without looking at the stats/metrics/whatever...

Just from watching the games, I thought Mitre was pretty solid and could give long innings from the bullpen. Most of the time, though, he was in for mop-up duty and held his own there. I think when he has pitched in high-leverage innings, he got torched.

I still don’t see how the hell Kotsay is on this team and Mitre who has some value in providing the team with the whooping boy, long innings.

Now, glancing at some stats real quick, he got touched up against the Cubs and Boston. I guess I just like Mitre more than Kotsay!

I should develop a new metric that measures how much my grandmother swears at the player to how terrible they really are.
