Rumorville: Could JJ Hardy be coming home?
This is pretty flimsy stuff, even for Rumorville, but here goes: I'm told that TMJ listed the Brewers as one of three teams in the market for JJ Hardy. No link, just hearsay.
they're getting the band back together!

That's not how you counteract selling him low in the first place?

What if they win the world series
and are terrible for the next 10 years?

I dont really care.
One World Series in infinitely more than the number they won in the past 40 years.

Disagree
I’d absolutely hate to be a Marlins fan.

For a city that still enjoys losing a World Series
winning one would be a 25 year nirvana.

Would you rather be the Cubs?
Not saying they haven’t been god awful in their 100+ year streak without a title (it’s too long of a time for them not to be) but they’ve had some REALLY good teams and fell flat on their faces.
I’d much rather have a WS winning team and suck for 10 years, though I doubt they’d suck for 10 years because other than Fielder pretty much the whole team will be back next year.
Grillax people
I'm not sure how trading for Hardy dooms us to a losing season for the next decade.
"PLUSH ALERT: THERE WAS AN UNTUCKING AT FENWAY!"
I agree - it does doom the young women of Milwaukee's nightlife to exposure to JJ for another decade though...

Depends on what we'd trade.
We don’t have much, and he’s doing well enough in a weak market that Baltimore can demand a decent return for him.

Especially since they're rumored to be ready to sign him.
Rumors like that, whether they’re true or not, are going to make teams think they want to keep him, and force them to offer more.
I think he’ll sign, but the Orioles have maximum control in this situation.

Are you implying
that there is anything possible that we have left to trade that would matter enough to be the difference between “not being terrible” and “being terrible” for the next 10 years?
I don’t. Our “future” is already on our team and under contract.

We're on a mission from God
Ugh, Betancourt
This is good news, per Rosenthal:
Sources: K-Rod has agreed to waive $17.5M vesting option in exchange for additional compensation. Will be FA at end of season. MORE #MLB
#Brewers can now use K-Rod freely in closer’s role without fear of option vesting. Option is gone. Games finished clause is gone. #MLB
I am too drunk to taste this chicken.

Eh, sort of bad news too.
It means the Brewers might be paying more and that Axford might get less saves. The easiest solution was just to not let K-Rod finish 21 games. Simple.
"PLUSH ALERT: THERE WAS AN UNTUCKING AT FENWAY!"
Unless it also comes with a handshake agreement with K-Rod/Boras that if the Brewers offer arbitration he will decline. That would be nice.

Unless his arm falls off, he would never ever accept arbitration
He’s guaranteed a 2-year deal somewhere, if not 3 years. One of the few relief pitchers where a 2-year deal would actually be rational … which is exactly why he’ll get a 3 year deal.

My thoughts as well, though informally taking away the risk of him accepting would be nice.
"PLUSH ALERT: THERE WAS AN UNTUCKING AT FENWAY!"
Relatively good news, anyway
It takes away the obstacle of being careful around how much to use him. Roenicke is also free to slot K-Rod into the closer role for “only when Axford is winded” rather than to keep him from feeling screwed on his extension. Probably the best case scenario from a people management perspective. Then again, it also gives RRR free reign to run the closers out there with little reasoning.

$17.4 million

If it's more than 1.5 million more I would be surprised
I still think K-Rod gets more money in the long-term from the option not vesting so the Brewers shouldn’t have to have offered him too much more.

According to my 3rd counsin twice removed
The Brewers are close to landing A-Rod from the Yankees in exchange for Scarpetta and Axford. He totally called the Edmonds trade last year so this is a sure thing.
Founder of the BCBCU - Est. 2011
Better be more than that
A-Rod has 6 more years and $143M left on his contract (not including the ~$13M he’s still owed this season).
Not to mention we’d need to find another closer next season.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
$71 million over 6.5 years isn't bad.
He’ll be worthless at the end of the contract so it’s not a great deal.

You mean...
may purchase 4 Legends Suite or comparable season tickets for 2009-17
or
$30M marketing agreement based on home run milestones ($6M each for reaching 660, 714, 755 and tying and breaking major league HR record)
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I had heard some other ones a few years ago. I just looked it up on Cot's, and those were the only two I saw.
Maybe I’m thinking of somebody else, but there must be stuff that’s not listed on Cot’s..
http://www.mlbsoup.com
I appreciate the fact that 755 is still a milestone in there. Considering it's the legitimate record.
For your health!
But if he breaks it
It still won’t be considered legitimate.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Certainly not by me. Aaron is the record holder.
The Home Run Record is kind of weird anyway though. Ruth was the better home run hitter by far. Aaron just played longer.
RUTH – 714 HR – 8399 ABs
AARON – 755 HR – 12364 ABs
Almost 4,000 more at-bats and only 41 more HRs.
The Record is Aaron’s but I don’t really consider him the “Home Run King” or anything.
It bums me out that Ken Griffey Jr. had so many injury issues. I think he may have been able to break the record and as far as I am aware, he’s never been linked to steroids or other PEDs.
For your health!
More to your point:
Ruth played a significant number of his games in the Polo Grounds. Which made RFK look like a bandbox.
by BrewCrewBrian on Jul 18, 2011 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions
Thanks for that mention
I actually got the wife interested in baseball for about 10 minutes by looking at old photos of polo grounds IV and talking about Ruth hitting in a park with a 483’ CF fence. Boy, today’s players sure couldn’t handle a park like that. There’s so much room behind home plate that any passed ball would give a runner two bases; the outfield gaps are so big that IPHRs would be routine.
Not only that
The bats they used were ridiculously heavy… 40-50 oz.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Jeez...
… did they give him Prima Nocta if Jeter ever gets married too? And a chorus of people dressed as Yankee fans to show up at his house 2 times a month and tell him how awesome he is

The question with Hardy
Is if he has was able to remove the “Young and the Restless” curse in his time in Minnesota and Maryland. We all know that was what was holding us down all those years and we don’t need that again…
