Shortstop Trade Targets
In the hope that if enough Fanposts begging for an upgrade to Yuniesky Betancourt are posted on Brew Crew Ball, Doug Melvin will be forced to take notice (seeing as he is a confirmed commenter here under the alias BUCKS), here is another one. Jeff Keppinger was just traded to the Giants, but he isn't very good anyways and there are a number of impending free agents who have played shortstop in the major leagues this season and who are on non-contending teams (10+ games back). I've compiled a Google Spreadsheet listing every single player on a non-contending team who has played shortstop this season and their estimated availability in a trade (plus stats):
Obviously, some of those players are definitely off limits or most likely off limits (indicated in the spreadsheet), but there are still quite a few names that are probable upgrades over Yuniesky, including some interesting names that I haven't seen heavily discussed in trade rumors but who I think make sense as trade targets for the Brewers.
Cesar Izturis, Alfredo Amezega, Clint Barmes, Jamey Carroll, Rafael Furcal, Jose Reyes, Jack Wilson, John McDonald, and Alex Cora are all set to be free agents after this season, according to the contract info on Cots, and most of those players (with the possible exception of Amezega, McDonald and Cora) are "starting-caliber" players who the organization might feel comfortable giving the Brewers starting SS job too. Unfortunately, Reyes might not even be traded and if he is, it almost certainly won't be to Milwaukee. Also note that Yuniesky's actual/projected stats are basically worse than every single other player listed. Even the horrible, crappy ones.
Jamey Carroll has been popularly linked to the Brewers, and while I would welcome an upgrade to Betancourt, I'm not sure a 37-year-old with limited past success is the ideal target. Personally, the players that interest me the most are Clint Barmes from the Astros, Mike Aviles from the Royals, Jason Bartlett from the Padres, and Jack Wilson from the Mariners.
All four of those players are on teams that are well out of the race and should look to be selling (it looks like Houston has already started liquidating their roster), all four are definite upgrades over Betancourt, and all four have been regular starters in the past.
I would be most interested in Mike Aviles, who according to ZiPS Rest of Season projections and past defensive performance looks like the most appealing candidate of the bunch, and who seemingly has no role in Kansas City anymore with Alcides Escobar at SS, Mike Moustakas at 3B, and another elite prospect in Christian Colon (SS/2B) coming up through the minors. He's under team control for three more years, so Kansas City may not have a huge incentive to trade him, but he's playing back in the minors right now and would be a very useful piece for the Brewers and worth giving up what it might take to get him, within reason.
Jason Bartlett is an intriguing target as well. His contract runs through 2012 with a 2013 option, but the Padres could easily trade him for some slight payroll relief and instead return to Everth Cabrera, who was their primary starting shortstop in '09, struggled in limited playing time in '10, but who is still very young and has decent potential. Bartlett would solve the problem of who will be the Brewers starting shortstop in 2012, and he might have as much upside as anyone on the above list other than Jose Reyes and Hanley Ramirez. In 2009 he hit .320/.389/.490 for the Rays before hitting a wall in 2010, but a return to a non-Petco park in Milwaukee would surely help his offensive numbers trend back toward his .323 career wOBA.
If I were Doug Melvin, I would be diligently pursuing these players. What say you, Brew Crew Ball?!

Nice work
I like the spreadsheet. I’d like it more if it included my personal fave, Brent Lillibridge of the White Sox. I agree that Bartlett and Aviles are the best of the bunch, but there isn’t enough left of our farm to pry them away. If the Moustache has any more magic in him, now’s the time for it!
Mike Aviles seems like a pretty interesting possibility. He's not young so I can't see how they could ask a whole lot for him. Especialy since he's blocked.
For your health!
Good point, I didn't realize until look at it again that Aviles is already 30.
Christian Colon is already at AA and will probably moving to 2B in the long run, and obviously they have SS/3B covered pretty well. They also have Chris Getz as a younger backup infielder. I can’t imagine Aviles is in their long term plans and it seems like he could be had for a useful minor piece or two. (I mean, he’s 30 and they’re stashing him at AAA…)

I agree with you on Bartlett
It seems to me like he’s the player with the most upside out of everyone potentially available, but I don’t know if the Padres would want to part with him. He was one of their big off-season acquisitions, and they don’t seem to be as high on Everth Cabrera anymore for some reason. Still, it’s worth making a run at him.
Yeah, Bartlett is probably unlikely to be available.
He’s a lot more realistic than Reyes or Ramirez though, and given the presence of Cabrera I can at least see it as a possibility that San Diego would be willing to part with him.

Barmes
Would be my choice because of his sorely needed defense. But would the Astros trade two middle infielders in a row like that?

I think it's possible
The Astros seem like they might be going into fire sale mode, especially with whatever is going on with the ownership situation, and Barmes is going to be gone at the end of the season anyways. They have Tommy Manzella waiting in AAA, who is horrible, but who started 82 games at SS for them last year and could easily fill in again for a team that is going nowhere this year.

What about Sean Rodriguez with the Rays?
He’s played some shortstop (88 innings in 2011) and is stuck in a utility role in Tampa, but seems like he could play every day. I have no idea about his contract or team control situation, though.
His defense at SS seems to be a bit of an unkown
And it doesn’t look like he’ll hit enough to make up for (potentially) poor defense
Get a ife broseph
He was a 2B/OF prospect with the Halos before they traded him as the centerpiece in the Kazmir deal
Man, did we get rooked on that one! S-Rod was never projected as a MLB SS; he was expected to stick at OF or possibly 2B. And while he raked in the PCL, he’s been less consistent at the MLB level.
Hey, why is everyone so worried about SS
We did just get 4 RBIs out of ours last night….

they're all about consistency these days
and YB showed some inconsistency by actually producing. strike while the iron’s hot.
Personally, I like the McDonald idea
granted, his bat is terrible, but no worse than Yuni’s so far this year. In addition, He’s lost his job to Yunel Escobar who the Jays just locked up Yunel Escobar for the next 2 years with club options for 14-15.
The part that makes me like him the best is that he has a PLUS glove, which none of the other candidates have. and that is what the Crew needs.
This entire situation reminds me of ’04 when the Red Sox traded for Orlando Cabrera to sure up their infield D. We know where that took them.

There are number of guys who have very solid defense and might be available.
Barmes and Aviles actually have better career numbers at SS. I wouldn’t mind adding McDonald though; my only hesitation is that he’s entering his late 30s and there’s a younger replica of McDonald potentially available in Jack Wilson.
"PLUSH ALERT: THERE WAS AN UNTUCKING AT FENWAY!"
Heres what pushes Mcdonald over the top
2011 Salary:
McDonald: 1.5 mil
Wilson: 5 mil

honestly, i'd rather take a stab at aaron hill
who also has a plus glove and is heading towards free agency (has an option year left, i believe).
johnny mac is also one of the biggest fan favourites around these parts.
whereas aaron hill is beginning to fall out of favour.
Hill hasn't played shortstop at all since '06 though, and even then he was primarily a 2B.
"PLUSH ALERT: THERE WAS AN UNTUCKING AT FENWAY!"
It's feeling less likely to me
The options that are available are so uninspiring, I don’t really see Melvin making a move. According to all of the broadcasts, Yuni is (somehow) really popular in the clubhouse so it sounds like the players aren’t in open mutiny over their unproductive SS. The GM isn’t supposed to be everyone’s best friend, but it feels like the Brewers are pushing clubhouse chemistry this year.

I don't think "for better or worse" applies here
It’s just “worse.” At least you go something tangible out of it. Now that I’ve posted this, Melvin will surely find some way to get Scutaro from the Red Sox for peanuts.

I think they'll get Josh Wilson's replacement, not Yuni's
They mentioned last night that Yuni was playing last night because RR liked the matchup, not because he was committed to him starting.
I think they’ll keep trying to find someone who is better than Wilson and can split time and/or potentially take over for Yuni, not someone who is going to come in and start immediately.
Get a ife broseph
Wilson's career stats probably
I don’t disagree that Wilson should be playing, but its plainly obvious they don’t see him as much of an upgrade over Yuni

I don't think we can win the division with YB at SS.
Unless Casey gets back to form but even then I’m not sure.
The Pirates are likely to improve their team.
We need to upgrade at least some facet of out SS position.
For your health!
I think any improvements the Pirates make will be outweighed by their crashing back towards reality. 12th in wOBA, 13th in FIP.

And easiest SOS in the baseball up to this point.

yep, they could be out of the picture by the end of the month
after 4 games in Atlanta followed by 3 in Philly.
Not every team has solid hitters 1-8
Admittedly, there aren’t many championship teams that have one of the worst players in baseball starting for them, but the difference between a -0.8 WAR SS and a 0.0 WAR SS over 64 games is very little. A player hitting .250 with RISP is only going to get a hit 1 in 20 opportunities more often than a player with a .200 average. When we start talking about a stretch of only 55 games (about the trade deadline), those 1 in 20 differences start to get lost and luck begins to play a much larger role in productivity.
There are no clear impact players available at SS and the deeper it gets into the season, the less impact any given player will have. Roenicke appears to have learned his lesson and is keeping Yun-E6 in the bottom of the lineup where he won’t be doing a great harm to the team’s chances.
Having Nick Punto on Opening Day could’ve made an enormous difference. Having Jamey Carrol on July 30th will not.
Founder of the BCBCU - Est. 2011
There are above replacement level shortstops that Melvin should be pursuing though.
The difference over half a season between a -0.8 WAR SS and like, Clint Barmes or somebody, is probably >1 WAR. This year it looks like the division is going to come down to the wire so that could be huge.
Maybe nobody ends up being available, but hopefully he’s at least looking. Yuni is a problem (though so is McGehee…)
"PLUSH ALERT: THERE WAS AN UNTUCKING AT FENWAY!"
I guess if the Brewers can somehow afford the price of a >1 WAR SS then go for it
I don’t see it, but I’ll be excited if he pulls it off.

At least McGehee has been a valuable major league player.

He's the chubby kid on your little league team
who occasionally makes an decent attempt at playing, but mostly half-asses it. He doesn’t say anything bad and doesn’t mind being the punchline of a joke… heck, he even cracks a funny one once in a while. He’ll get anyone a cup of water when they need it and lend stuff to them without worrying about getting it back.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
"Happy go-lucky" is the appropriate term
He doesn’t seem to get bothered when he commits an error or strikes out swinging at three straight pitches.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I want Brenden Ryan.
I just remember that when he was on the cards I frequently cursed his name after he made a great play on a grounder in the hole.
All is vanity.
The fact that most of his value is his fielding makes him good idea
This is where I think we need the most help. The left side of the infield is terrible defensively and getting a top defensive player like Ryan would make a big difference.
The amount of plays that Yuni cannot/does not even try to make is embarrassing. It prolongs innings and is driving up the starters pitch counts. Gallardo and Grienke are hardly pitching passed the 6th inning and some of this down the extra hitters the fielding is making them face.
