Rickie Weeks Selected to Home Run Derby
Just wanted to hear everyone's thoughts about Rickie Weeks's selection to this year's home run derby.
Because he was selected by Prince Fielder, who I'm sure is a very close friend and teammate, given that they came up together through the Brewers system, do you see the selection as a personal favor, true pick, or something else?
I'm suggesting this because I was talking with my dad, who said that he thought that it might be a "parting gift" from Prince to Weeks. He thought that it was a sign that Fielder is leaning towards parting ways with the team.
Post your thoughts/feelings here.

Personal favor
Weeks and Fielder are very close. They came up together and were roommates in the minors. Weeks is also the godfather for Fielder’s son.
Granted, Weeks does have HR power (capable of hitting 20-25 HRs in a season), and I doubt if Fielder would’ve chosen him if he didn’t think he’d do well.

Obviously the Brewers don't have the money to compete with other teams such as the Yankees
But I guess I’m getting at the point that he may have already made up his mind that he’s leaving.
You don't think he had already made up his mind
when he turned down the supposed 5 yr/$100M deal the Brewers offered him last year?

I don't
I don't get why some people think I'm weird.

I think Fielder made up his mind by having Boras as his agent.

your avatar is confusing to me in checking on fanposts
but I can’t argue your phenomenal taste, in avatars anyway.
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

I don't know if it's really a "gift"
It’s cool that he’s in the Home Run Derby, but he was already starting the All Star Game so it’s just kind of a throw-in part of his break.
More likely is that Prince has seen how strong Weeks is in batting practice and thought he would be good in the derby (with some added favoritism for being friends/teammates, of course)
"PLUSH ALERT: THERE WAS AN UNTUCKING AT FENWAY!"
Has there ever been a player in the HR derby that wasn't an All-Star?
Teixeira was originally selected by Ortiz, but he turned it down because he wasn’t an All-Star. Cano was selected to replace him.

I think Ryan Howard did it a couple years ago
thereby setting precedent for Prince going last year as the reigning king, though he did not end up getting invited anyway. Just part of the conversation I remember.
You're right
He competed in 2007 to defend his HR derby title despite not being an All-Star.

The year they had players representing their country had a few I think.
I know Hee Sop Choi, for one, was in it.
