This is a Grantland.com article on how Doug Melvin constructed the current roster, and if they can win with the level of defensive suckitude.

Certainly not the '11 Brewers, who once again are roughly average defensively as a team.
"PLUSH ALERT: THERE WAS AN UNTUCKING AT FENWAY!"
Just a bit. -1.1 UZR/150 in '10 to a -1.8 UZR/150 in '11
5th best in the NL this season so far despite Yuni’s -20.1 UZR/150 at SS (good lord). I don’t get why the Brewers defense gets piled on when the Cardinals have the worst defense in the league though.
"PLUSH ALERT: THERE WAS AN UNTUCKING AT FENWAY!"
Still good for 19th overall
So not awful, but still nothing anyone would consider good.
I’m with you mostly though, if you watch enough of a team (sans the top couple defensive teams) you’ll see every single one of the mistakes and lack of range and come to the conclusion they are awful on defense.
Get a ife broseph
This is exactly right, re: the Cardinals:
if you were looking to write a story about a team that’s going after offense without regard for poor defense, the Cards are your team: they signed Berkman and Theriot (who’s actually worse in the field than Yuni, if you can believe that) and have had to resort to playing Pujols at third base this season.
If that doesn’t scream F*** DEFENSE, I don’t know what does.
We pull our pants up and do our jobs here.
Fangraphs only has team UZR/150 stats to 2002
Since then, the worst defensive team to win the WS was the 2004 Red Sox (-9.3)… followed by the 2009 Yankees (-3.3) and the 2006 Cardinals (-0.6).
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
it is a good article though...
maybe melvin figured that rather than try to get on the defensive fad, he’d just wait out until the next moneyball fad would be something other than defense, lol…
Why does Rickie Weeks defense still get a bad rap?
I think Weeks has developed defensively to be AT WORST an average defender.
No one talks anymore about him having to shift to the OF.
i agree
while he doesnt get to every ball that the top couple 2B get to, he makes plays he should and he hasnt had a negative UZR/150 since 2008…he’s at 7.9 for this season and also hasn’t had a negative fielding RAA since 08 either…
Defensive reputations more than anything else take longer to evolve
There hasn’t been a reliable defensive stat to point to for generations, so it’s difficult to make a case for a player improving defensively without watching them 120 games per year. Anyone that’s important knows Weeks is at worst an average defender.
