Brewers Walk Off With 13th Home Win In 14 Tries, Beat Dodgers 2-1

W: Takashi Saito (4-1)
L: Mike MacDougal (0-2)

HR: None

MVP: Yovani Gallardo (+.463)
LVP: Corey Hart (-.102)

Win Expectancy Graph and Star of the Game Voting

Another night, another excellent pitching performance, another close victory.

Yovani Gallardo was excellent tonight, having arguably his best outing since May. He allowed just one run on four hits and a walk over eight innings, striking out nine for the first time since June. Between the fourth and eighth innings he retired twelve consecutive batters. Unfortunately, the Brewer offense only managed one run while he was in the game and he received a no-decision.

The Brewer offense managed just the one run until the ninth inning, when Prince Fielder walked leading off, followed by a Casey McGehee single and a walk for Yuniesky Betancourt (!) to load the bases, and Mark Kotsay's single ended the game.

Takashi Saito, who pitched a perfect ninth, picked up the victory.

Quick numbers update

The Brewers can play under .500 the rest of the way (19-20) and finish 91-71. To beat that, the Cardinals would need a .692 W% the rest of the way.

was going to put this into the Estrada vs Kershaw writeup for Thursday, but I’ll preview it here: last year the Giants only used 7 starters (and the 7th was because Madison Bumgarner was suspended when they needed to call him up, iirc) The 2011 Brewers have used only 6 starting pitchers.

I was just going to say...

in any case, the B-R Play Index doesn’t cover that. In any case, if it’s 2011, it would have to involve the Angels, Mets, Brewers, Dodgers, and Red Sox. IIRC that’s the only teams with Japanese-born players.

Don’t think it’s ever been done with players from Taiwan or Korea, either—unless Kuo and Wang have met up, and I think the Dodgers already played the Nats for 2011.

The Brewers would have the 15th best home record in MLB history.

I think we can do better than that.

Crazy to think that even before this ridiculous streak, the Brewers were considered to be really good at home.

Uhhh....yeah, I can agree with you there

“Unbelieveable”??? More like unmentionable, until very recently. And to be fair, I admit he got good when the team absolutely needed him to. But I get your point…it’s like Carlos Gomez hitting a home run, he then goes out and hacks away for another 80-90AB until he hits another…..and the vicious cycle continues

Let's not get ahead of ourselves

They’re 6 games back right now and this is the Phillies we’re talking about. They’re good enough that they could lose only 10 games for the rest of the year. Sure, it would be great to sneak out home field throughout, but the Brewers aren’t going to win at a .900 clip the rest of the year.

Grabbing #2 record is still really important, because it’s still looking like the Braves are going to take the wildcard and the #2 division winner would hosts Atlanta in the NLDS. Getting two home games to start that series would be huge.

Founder of the BCBCU - Est. 2011

by ecocd on Aug 17, 2011 8:08 AM CDT up reply actions

And who knows

If Philly loses in the NLDS, having homefield advantage for the NLCS would be pretty nice too.

The #2 spot definitely has value.

by cwolf20 on Aug 17, 2011 9:43 AM CDT up reply actions

Great point.

Anything can happen in a 5-game series. The Giants are looking pretty strong with the Diamondbacks losing a good pitcher to injury. Pitching Lincecum twice in a series would give even the Astros a chance to win a pair of games.

Gallardo / Jungmann / Bradley / Thornburg / Peralta could be your 2013 or 2014 rotation, and that’s not bad.

Of course, still no shortstop worth a shit to be seen…
