Brewers Walk Off With 13th Home Win In 14 Tries, Beat Dodgers 2-1
W: Takashi Saito (4-1)
L: Mike MacDougal (0-2)
HR: None
MVP: Yovani Gallardo (+.463)
LVP: Corey Hart (-.102)
Win Expectancy Graph and Star of the Game Voting
Another night, another excellent pitching performance, another close victory.
Yovani Gallardo was excellent tonight, having arguably his best outing since May. He allowed just one run on four hits and a walk over eight innings, striking out nine for the first time since June. Between the fourth and eighth innings he retired twelve consecutive batters. Unfortunately, the Brewer offense only managed one run while he was in the game and he received a no-decision.
The Brewer offense managed just the one run until the ninth inning, when Prince Fielder walked leading off, followed by a Casey McGehee single and a walk for Yuniesky Betancourt (!) to load the bases, and Mark Kotsay's single ended the game.
Takashi Saito, who pitched a perfect ninth, picked up the victory.

I'm still astounded that
most of the guys we’ve been dissing most of the year have been contributing. Yuni, in general, had an off night, but still walked on 4 pitches.
This is about as fun as regular season baseball can get.

The Brewers can play under .500 the rest of the way (19-20) and finish 91-71. To beat that, the Cardinals would need a .692 W% the rest of the way.

They're playing like I expected them to play
was going to put this into the Estrada vs Kershaw writeup for Thursday, but I’ll preview it here: last year the Giants only used 7 starters (and the 7th was because Madison Bumgarner was suspended when they needed to call him up, iirc) The 2011 Brewers have used only 6 starting pitchers.
even if they use a 7th
I’m confident in Frankie de la Cruz. :) in any case, the Brewers 5th man whether it’s been Estrada or Narveson was far superior to Todd Wellemeyer, and probably was better than 2010 Bumgarner as well.

I wonder when the last time two Japanese-born players were credited with both the Win and Loss in a game?
"We’re here to win, man. All that fighting stuff, that’s for the birds." - Prince Fielder
Wait, Kuo is Taiwanese.
Nevermind!
"We’re here to win, man. All that fighting stuff, that’s for the birds." - Prince Fielder
I was just going to say...
in any case, the B-R Play Index doesn’t cover that. In any case, if it’s 2011, it would have to involve the Angels, Mets, Brewers, Dodgers, and Red Sox. IIRC that’s the only teams with Japanese-born players.
Don’t think it’s ever been done with players from Taiwan or Korea, either—unless Kuo and Wang have met up, and I think the Dodgers already played the Nats for 2011.
Orioles and Rangers too, think there might be another couple Japanese relievers out there somewhere.
Seems like it would be a rare occurrence though.
"We’re here to win, man. All that fighting stuff, that’s for the birds." - Prince Fielder
especially since they're all relievers
Kuroda’s the only non-DLed Japanese starter
(…and how did I forget about Uehara, who’s now a Ranger, and Tateyama? I’ve even got pictures I took of Tateyama when he was in AAA)

But
I thought the problem with KM is that he never went to the computer.
Brewers:
7 games ahead of the Uptight Citizens Brigade
Tied with the Braves for the Wild Card Safety Net
2.5 games ahead of Arizona to avoid the Phils in the 1st round
He continued to post on BCB while neglecting his fantasy team.
He even used “kittenmittons” as a verb, and asked if that was allowed for him to do.

Yeah, I'll go along with that one

Kotsay will use his warning track power to hit a triple, and Yuni will don his crown as the Sac Fly King.

Dear Mark Kotsay,
You may actually be worth your $1M contract, and you may actually be better than Chris Dickerson. My apologies for doubting. As you were.

His place should just be walk off pinch hitter.
That seems about the only thing he does well, and I appreciate him for that!

Uhhh....yeah, I can agree with you there
“Unbelieveable”??? More like unmentionable, until very recently. And to be fair, I admit he got good when the team absolutely needed him to. But I get your point…it’s like Carlos Gomez hitting a home run, he then goes out and hacks away for another 80-90AB until he hits another…..and the vicious cycle continues

Actually, "unbelievable" is perfectly accurate
It’s unbelievable Kotsay has gotten that many PAs this season. It’s unbelievable he’s started as many games as he has, too.

According to Tim Allen on 1250 WSSP, they have a separate radio feed at Miller Park for those who like to bring a radio to listen to at the game. Sometimes there is a delay from the regular 620 AM, but this one is an FM feed that is live. He did not know the FM station off hand though.

Philly @ Milwaukee, 4-game series, Sept 8-11
Already marking my calendar for that series. Should be a doozy – we lit up Lee and Halladay already this year. There better be at least one nationally televised game I can watch.
We need to destroy them

If they can get within 4 games of the Phillies by then it could become very important.
Home field throughout the playoffs.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves
They’re 6 games back right now and this is the Phillies we’re talking about. They’re good enough that they could lose only 10 games for the rest of the year. Sure, it would be great to sneak out home field throughout, but the Brewers aren’t going to win at a .900 clip the rest of the year.
Grabbing #2 record is still really important, because it’s still looking like the Braves are going to take the wildcard and the #2 division winner would hosts Atlanta in the NLDS. Getting two home games to start that series would be huge.
Founder of the BCBCU - Est. 2011
And who knows
If Philly loses in the NLDS, having homefield advantage for the NLCS would be pretty nice too.
The #2 spot definitely has value.
Great point.
Anything can happen in a 5-game series. The Giants are looking pretty strong with the Diamondbacks losing a good pitcher to injury. Pitching Lincecum twice in a series would give even the Astros a chance to win a pair of games.

Just saying what the fans wanna hear maybe but I really hope we don’t shackle the future on him either… As this recent hot streak shows, pitching is more important.

Sure, but there's kind of a light at the end of the tunnel.
Gallardo / Jungmann / Bradley / Thornburg / Peralta could be your 2013 or 2014 rotation, and that’s not bad.
Of course, still no shortstop worth a shit to be seen…

Greed is good.
At least it is for beleaguered small market baseball fans who finally have a team that kicks ass.
I had a dream last night
That TLR was at a bar griping to Dave Duncan that if he knew they were going to be out of it they would have dumped Pujols for prospects before the deadline.
So if we go 14-6 over our next 20 games are people going to freak out and say we suck?
