Friday's Frosty Mug
Some things to read while getting unstuck.
The Brewers came within one game of a perfect homestand but couldn't finish it off yesterday, falling 5-1. Vaughn's Valley has a look at the silver lining.
It's hard to get too upset about losing to Clayton Kershaw, a bona fide NL Cy Young candidate. True Blue LA notes that he's only the eleventh Dodger to win 15 games before September, and the first since Hideo Nomo in 2003. The Dodgers are 16-9 in his appearances despite giving him two runs or less of support in seven starts.
I don't know if it's fair to say the Brewer hot streak is over at this point, because they've still won 19 of 22 games. With that said, Chris Cwik of FanGraphs has a look at the performances that have led them to this point.
Other notes from the field:
- Ryan Braun went 1-for-4 with a triple yesterday and scored the Brewers only run. Entering the game he was a .390 career hitter against the Dodgers.
- Clayton Kershaw, Prince Fielder and Marco Estrada are leading FanGraphs' Star of the Game voting.
- Yesterday was the Brewers' last weekday 1 pm home game of the season.
- 42,873 paid to see yesterday's game.
- The Brat won the Sausage Race.
The Brewers headed to New York following the game yesterday and open a three game series with the Mets tonight. Jordan Schelling of MLB.com has the preview. Head over to Prognostikeggers to make your predictions. The Mets will be playing this weekend without Jose Reyes, who is expected to remain out through at least Tuesday with a hamstring strain.
This will be Francisco Rodriguez's first trip back to Citi Field since being traded away over a month ago. Adam McCalvy talked to him about going back to New York and his new role with the Brewers.
Yuniesky Betancourt went 0-for-3 yesterday and is now hitless in his last 14 at bats. For the first time we're starting to see some movement towards getting him out of the lineup: Tom Haudricourt said Ron Roenicke likes Jerry Hairston Jr and may get him some playing time at shortstop once Rickie Weeks returns from the DL.
Nyjer Morgan got the day off yesterday, allowing him to maintain his hold on history: He has nine HBP and just seven walks this season, making him the only player in Brewer history with at least one walk and more HBP than walks. Doug Russell reposted his article on Morgan from the recent edition of GameDay Magazine.
This is one of the unwritten rules of 2011: When we're not talking about Nyjer Morgan, we're almost always talking about Zack Greinke. Today is no exception:
- Jaymes Langrehr of The Brewers Bar says Greinke is back.
- Jim Breen of Bernie's Crew rebutted with the "Greinke is just unlucky" argument.
- David Golebiewski of Baseball Analytics throws more fuel on the "unlucky" fire.
- JD from View From Bernie's Chalet apologized for doubting Greinke.
Here are today's injury notes:
- Rickie Weeks ran on a treadmill and took BP yesterday, and will be with the team in New York and Pittsburgh.
- Chris Narveson is still a possibility to start a game in Monday's doubleheader, but his status is uncertain and will likely remain so until he throws a bullpen in New York this weekend.
- Tyler Maas of The AV Club says Narveson's scissors are one of several keepsakes from the season you should be on the lookout for.
If Narveson can't go on Monday, the Brewers do have another option: Yesterday Ron Roenicke hinted at the possibility that Wily Peralta, who would be on normal rest, could be summoned to start a game in the doubleheader. Jack Moore of Disciples of Uecker is pretty excited. Frankie De La Cruz could also be called upon if the Brewers decide not to make a roster move.
This has been a big criticism of the Brewers in the past, but hasn't come up as often this year: 37.5% of Milwaukee's runs this season have scored via homers, the seventh highest percentage in baseball. The Blue Jays are the only team over 50%. (h/t @thtlinks)
Elsewhere in statistics: The B-Ref Blog is listing John Axford as baseball's third best reliever by WPA (3.201). LaTroy Hawkins is 29th at 1.533.
In the minors:
- MLB Bonus Baby has a pretty thorough assessment of the Brewers' 2011 draft, calling it "a much needed shot to a depleted farm system."
- The affiliates went 2-5 last night but Huntsville shortstop Hainley Statia went 2-for-4 with a pair of triples in their 5-4 win over Mississippi. You can read about that and more in today's Minor League Notes.
- Taylor Green, who has been out of action in Nashville since the weekend with a sprained thumb, made a pinch hit appearance last night.
- Huntsville reliever Lucas Luetge is on Twitter. I've added him to the list, and made a note not to drink the water in Peoria.
- Baseball America has a story on Nashville center fielder Logan Schafer, but it's subscriber-only.
In power rankings: Yahoo has the Brewers holding steady at 4.
Around baseball:
Athletics: Placed pitcher Trystan Magnuson on the DL with shoulder soreness.
Marlins: Placed reliever Randy Choate on the DL with elbow inflammation.
Rangers: Acquired pitcher Tim Wood from the Pirates for a PTBNL or cash.
Red Sox: Placed third baseman Kevin Youkilis on the DL with back soreness.
Royals: Signed outfielder Jeff Francoeur to a two year, $13.5 million contract extension.
Twins: Placed outfielder Denard Span on the DL with concussion symptoms.
You already know about Wood and have seen the latest news on Joey Votto and Carlos Zambrano if you've read this morning's edition of Around the NL Central.
In former Brewers:
- Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com has a story on Jose Valentin, who is working with young players in Puerto Rico.
- Mark Attanasio, Doug Melvin and Brewer Executive Vice President of Business Operations Rick Schlesinger are headed to San Diego this weekend to attend the ceremonies as Trevor Hoffman's number is retired by the Padres.
- Subjective Baseball says Dave Nilsson had the eighth best final season in MLB history.
- Todd Coffey is one of 13 nominees to receive the nickname "Frog in the Pot" at NotGraphs.
If you've been around baseball coverage at all over the last few hours you've likely heard this story, but in case you hadn't: The Twins were forced to play with no bench players and Joe Mauer starting in right field for the first time last night when recent callup Luke Hughes went to the wrong gate and missed his flight to join the team.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to get out of here.
Drink up.

And he was fired before the trade deadline
Nobody was at the wheel on August 1…. so disastrous for that team.
That's unreal.
I thought the only two possible reasons for why the Cubs didn’t move Pena were: (1) we didn’t get offered anything in return; or (2) we’re going to try to sign him to a long-term deal.
A third option — we don’t have a GM right now — didn’t even occur to me.
We pull our pants up and do our jobs here.

Newbie, the only way you could be less productive on offense or defense is if you were, in fact, the dirt on which you’re standing. Of course, then you’d be providing some jackass with dirt on which to stand and reflect on what a jackass he truly is. I know! Here, it’s a conundrum. But don’t you worry about it — I’ll tackle that one right upstairs. In the meantime, you could at least pretend to be doing some work. And right about now, even though you don’t have your basket, aw, it’s just a terrific time for you to skip away, Shirley. Skip away. Skip away. Go on. Skip away.

That was my thought too
Obviously I’m biased as a Brewer fan, but I don’t understand what is so unlikable about Braun and Fielder. I get that they have their little celebrations, but I don’t think it’s that far above and beyond what other players do.
I also am puzzled that we aren’t allowed to enjoy the Brewers’ success this season because the Brewers have historically been bad.

Yeah didn't get that either
It might’ve been when Braun was plunked by a Pittsburgh pitcher (Karstens maybe?) a couple years ago, but I don’t remember anything he said afterwards that would’ve had him labeled a “whiner”
This game is bigger than YOU or ME.
Without me, the game will go on...Without the game, I won't go on

People think Braun is the same guy he was in 2008
The thing is, he’s matured immensely since then. I don’t think he’ll ever shake the label in the eyes of opponents fans.
I think Molina/Carpenter/Pujols/TLR fit that mold for me.
Yeah, unless Molina and TLR somehow matured immensely since three weeks ago
And we didn’t hear about it.

Let me rephrase
Even IF they matured immensely, I still would not remove the douchebag label from them.
I was hoping that the Pirates would get over the .500 mark and break that streak, but not after reading that.

Yep, that
I was feeling bad for the Pirates. I thought they would hit the wall eventually, but I didn’t expect them to break their necks against it. It was refreshing to see them succeed, even if we had to fight them for 1st. Now after reading that? Grow up. If you are so miserable that you hate anyone who’s having fun, then you deserve your misery.

Braun was pretty showy
And very cocky. I guarantee that if I wasn’t a Brewer fan, I would have hated him too.
Not anymore than any other great player in baseball.
“Old school” types were angry because he was doing what every other player did except he was still a rookie so he hadn’t “earned it.” I think it’s pretty clear he’s continued to back it up with his performance.

I'm not fighting you on it
It’s just a perception you get with a player like him.
Remetee didn’t help, either.
Real reason
People on the internet don’t like Braun because he reminds them of the popular jock in high school who was mean to them. But I hate to break it to them: every American player in the major leagues was that guy (except Craig Counsell… maybe Zack Greinke). People grow up. They need to get over it.

I challenge anyone on these here interwebs
To come up with any actual example to support this “the Brewers are arrogant, douchey douches” narrative from anytime in the past two seasons. (And not involving Nyjer Morgan, because everyone knows he’s nuts, and if you hate the Brewers because of him, you also had to hate the Nationals last year and the Pirates before that, and we all know no one hated them.)
Guess what? You’re not going to find any, because they don’t exist. This stereotype is completely baseless, and I, for one, am getting sick as hell of it.

Everything that people would cite as "arrogant" or "douchey"
Is just guys having fun. It’s amazing how easily people take offense to that in baseball.
by cwolf20 on Aug 19, 2011 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
But what are they even citing?
What are they referring to? Everything I’ve seen has either no specifics at all, or if there are specific events, they’re from 2-3 years ago, when these guys were 24 or 25 years old.
I would venture to say that almost no team in the majors has been provoked as much as the Brewers during 2010-11 (especially when it comes to HBPs), and yet they’ve done absolutely nothing to taunt or retaliate against their opponents. It’s complete bullshit.
by Cheeseandcorn on Aug 19, 2011 1:16 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
They're not citing anything.
They’re mad that the Brewers have the Pirates number right now. Isn’t it as simple as that?
We pull our pants up and do our jobs here.
It is for the Pirates
But that’s the conventional wisdom around the entire National League, among both fans and media. I mean, I don’t really care what other people think about the Brewers – haters gonna hate, and all that – but willful ignorance in any form pisses me off like no other.
by Cheeseandcorn on Aug 19, 2011 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions
Ryan Braun is a whining monster:
Asked if Karstens drilled him intentionally, Braun said, “Probably, yeah. It’s rare for major league pitchers to miss by that much with a fastball. We play them about 17 more times (actually 13). Tell Mr. Selig, we’ll see what happens. It’s going to be interesting.”
That quote and untucking. Not sure what else there is to cite re: their “outrageous antics”
"We’re here to win, man. All that fighting stuff, that’s for the birds." - Prince Fielder
That's a 2 1/2-year-old quote that didn't end up amounting to anything anyway.
If that’s all they have, I’d suggest they just make crap up out of thin air. That would hold about as much weight, and at least it’d be fun.
by Cheeseandcorn on Aug 19, 2011 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions
they’ve done absolutely nothing to taunt or retaliate against their opponents
Well… not exactly. We forgive our guys instantly for what they do, because we see it within context. To other teams it’s crazy antics, taking our shirts off, arrogant quotes, and even charging the clubhouse.
But again
Everything you linked to either happened 2+ years ago or involved only Nyjer Morgan, who is certifiably insane. I get why some people disliked stuff the 2008-09 Brewers did. But there’s simply no reason whatsoever to think the 2011 Brewers are arrogant jerks, and yet that’s their general reputation.

Other teams do all those things except for the Fielder incident, and that was blown way out of proportion (though I won’t go into my theory as to why)

Just lazy writing
I was actually interested to see what this writer’s perspective would be about the Brewers but it was such a poorly argued, lazy post it is practically meaningless. It’s not very difficult to pick out a team that’s got your number and then rail on them with some vague comments about them being douchy and whiny. I guess comparing them to another team that you used to hate is clever, or something, but that piece could have been about any team. _______ is a douche. _______ whines. Just wait until _______ leaves for FA and _________ starts losing, then they’ll be sorry that they beat us all the time and were ever happy about making the playoffs. Wow, I really strained my brain making that argument.

For MLB on FOX tomorrow
Looks like it is NL Central Day. Only the Astros are not playing during the national broadcast window tomorrow.
St. Louis @ Chicago wins in terms of total area covered, as they get almost everything west of the Mississippi River (and some east of it as well). They get Josh Lewin and Mark Grace to announce the game.
Milwaukee @ New York might get more actual viewers, as they get all of the states along the east coast (with the exception of Pennsylvania, which is split) and going inland a little bit, plus all of Wisconsin and Minnesota, most of Michigan, North Dakota, & South Dakota, and a little of Iowa. Looks like they get the A team for this weekend of Matt Vasgersian and Tim McCarver.
Cincinnati @ Pittsburgh will be the forgotten game, though people in all of Ohio and parts of Pennsylvania, Indiana, West Virginia, and Kentucky won’t be able to forget it. They get to listen to Dick Stockton and Mitch Williams.
Here’s a link to the actual map.

The talk about needing a lefty in the bullpen has really died down. I’m not saying that they don’t need it, but it’s amazing how much that talk has gone away.
Contributor on Brew Crew Ball, Commissioner of Prognostikeggers, Owner of a broken sarcasm detector
It's because our
7th/8th inning guys are doing a much, much better job than our revolving door of loogys this season
But when it comes playoff time, we probably will need a lefty in the ‘pen, which will almost certainly be Narve Dog (as he won’t, barring injuries, be in the rotation during any given playoff series)

The Brewers are on course for 2.99 million attendence now with 18 home games to go.
They need to average 37,446 to be over 3 million which, with 6 games left against the Cubs and Cards plus being in 1st place looks very likely.
It must make the ownerships decision to keep the payroll at around $90 million that much easier if they know they can count on such a high level of support when the team is successful.
They sold out a Thursday afternoon game against the Dodgers
I think they will beat the 37,446 needed
