Very excited

Just hope he gets some playing time. Why not keep Dillard and send down De la Cruz?

I was disappointed with the lack of hookers but the pancakes were delightful

De La Cruz is out of options.

Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.

by cooper82 on Aug 26, 2011 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Because they've used Dillard as an innings eater/mop up guy (as of late)

And with Estrada and Narveson back to the pen, it makes more sense (to me at least) to keep a guy who can throw with velocity than a guy who can go multiple innings to keep as the last guy.

Hrm.

Half the starts at 3rd. Possible, but not probable.

Cut Kotsay – he has the secret folder that will doom RR and DM, not happening.

Bring up Gamel – To play where? They never use him when he is up. ;/

Bring back Weeks – He will bring himself back! Actually I would like to see that injury shore up.

Hairston to SS – Not even going to use snark. Yes, this should happen.

That dog just won't hunt.

It should all happen.

Gamel would be a far better bench bat than anything we currently have.

Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.

I think so too.

Just would like to see him get more ABs up here.

IIRC

Gamel didn’t do so well at the plate when only getting sporadic playing time.

Gamel was once a top prospect

If he struggles (and he has) it’s Melvin, Macha’s or RR’s fault

Gamel is just special. Its the Orgs fault if he doesn’t hit, or something like that.

I'd cut Betancourt before Kotsay

But those two should definitely be the first ones to go.

I actually don't mind Kotsay that much

As long as he’s strictly a LH bench bat in the playoffs. I wouldn’t mind if he got cut, but I won’t be upset when he doesn’t.

Hmmmm

I wanted Green up two months ago. Now? It seems like odd timing. Since he doesn’t play anything other than third, I guess he’d only be called up if he is expected to play some. But if you want him to share time with McGehee, that should have been done earlier.

Now they have McGehee, Green, Wilson, Yuni, Counsell, Hairston to play 2B/3B/SS. Already too many infielders. When Rickie is back, then what?

I like that he’s up… I’m just trying to figure out the vision here. Is there a trade coming, therefore making the addition necessary?

To be postseason eligible, a player has to be on the 25-man at some point prior to September 1.

I think. I could be wrong, and usually am re: roster rules.

I believe

It is on the 25 man or the dl on august 31st.

Rules on being eligible for the postseason roster

You are right, players have to be on the 25-man roster or the DL before September 1st.

However, there is a provision that allows players from the 40-man roster before September 1st to be added to a playoff roster in place of players who are currently on the 60-day DL. The two criteria is that the player must play the same position and the commissioner must approve the move.

The only reason I can think of making this move now is so Green can be eligible for the postseason roster. They’re doing the same thing that Cincinnati did last season with Aroldis Chapman.

Exactly.

Basically, this means that unlike everyone else’s, his September callup will be a playoff audition. If he can hack it, he gets a shot at the playoff roster. If not, no harm done.

by Cheeseandcorn on Aug 26, 2011 11:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually, I think it's so Weeks can take his place.

They can only replace a position player for a position player or a pitcher for a pitcher. Due to the double header, the Brewers were carrying 13 pitchers and 12 position players. They needed to make sure they had at least 13 position players on the roster as of September 1st.

They could’ve brought up Gamel, I suppose, but this is likely just a move to get a warm body on the bench so he can be replaced by Weeks or Gomez in September.

The thing is, most teams can afford to go with 11 pitchers and 14 position players in the postseason, because they only need a 4-man rotation (the 5th starter becomes the standard 7th bullpen arm). If Gomez is ready to come off the DL August 31, I expect him to replace FDLC on the active roster. When Weeks comes back, he takes Green’s spot on the postseason roster.

Regardless of Green’s performance until Weeks comes back, he’s not going to take the place of Yuni, Wilson, Counsell or Kotsay. Sorry guys. :(

Wilson and Hairston can both pull double duty in the OF if needed

and hopefully Gomez is back soon (I saw on twitter today that he could even start a rehab assignment tomorrow and be back sometime next week?), so even if the injury bug strikes, we’ll have enough OFs. Playoff eligible position players (as of today):

OF: Gomez, Hairston, Plush, Hart, Braun, Wilson, Kotsay

IF: McGehee, Green, Weeks, Wilson, Yuni, Counsell, Hairston.

7 guys with OF experience and 7 guys with IF experience (not including 1B). Seems balanced to me.

by Fiesta on Aug 26, 2011 11:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Gamel Should Be Eligible as Well

Wasn’t Gamel up earlier in the year? I think that should qualify him for the playoff roster

by Brewcityhoya13 on Aug 27, 2011 12:20 AM CDT up reply actions

It's just for current players

you have to be on the 25 man, on the DL, bereavement list, or suspended at midnight of August 31st. Unless Gamel gets a call up before Wednesday, he won’t be post season eligible.

by Fiesta on Aug 27, 2011 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions

The rule is that the PTBNL cannot have appeared in the same league as the receiving team, or something to that effect. Whether that’s at the time or the trade or the time that the PTBNL is claimed/named I am not sure.

Rules aside though, I don’t think Melvin would let Green be called up if he was potentially about to be traded.

by SRB on Aug 26, 2011 10:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Right

If he’s on the PTBNL list, then the Brewers wouldn’t even bother bringing him up as it costs them more money (MLB salary) and he occupies a roster spot that could be used for someone else to be post-season eligible.

Excellent!

Haudricourt thought it was an unlikely chance that Green would make the 40 man roster, because he thought the brewers didn’t like him (probably because they don’t praise him enough).

Is Green just going to be a pinch hitter or is actually make spot starts for McGehee?

by gffjenks on Aug 26, 2011 11:58 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Oh yeah 2B

Green may be a better option than Wilson on days Hairston plays CF.

by gffjenks on Aug 27, 2011 12:00 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Hairston plays CF vs LHP

Green is a LH hitter with a large platoon split (so far in his career). No match.

I'm happy for Green

but I was looking forward to seeing him play in person next week. Did Nashville make a corresponding infield move yet…wait, I’m the minor league person around here, I should know. And I don’t.

Problem with platooning Casey

is that Casey has actually hit righties way better than lefties this season – his OPS against righties is nearly .300 above lefties, who Green also struggles against.

by Archibaldcrane on Aug 27, 2011 9:14 AM CDT reply actions

Hell.

Casey hits lefties so badly, maybe once Gomez and Rickie come back we should play JHJ at 3rd and Gomez in center vs. lefties.

But crap, then who plays short?
