I recently did a little spreadsheet on how the NL play-off teams have done since the Brewers joined the NL back in 1997. In the 14 year period since 1997 only three teams (21% of the time) with the best W-L record went to the WS and none of them won. Five teams (36%) with the 2nd best record went to the WS and 4 of them won; four teams (29%) with the 3rd best record went to the WS and one of them won and finally two teams (14%) with the worst record went to the WS and one of them won. In addition, during this period there were ten teams that won 100 games or more and only two of them went to the WS and neither of them won. History suggests that it isn't really all that important for the Brewers to overtake the Phillies.
