Chris Narveson will miss his next start with a laceration on his thumb
Todd Rosiak reports that Narveson was attempting to repair his glove with a pair of scissors, which slipped and caused a gash that required eight stitches.

Crap
Isn’t that what equipment managers are for?
Is it on his throwing hand? Looks like Estrada is going to get a couple of starts.

It says that he cut his left thumb. So, yes, it is on his throwing hand.

One would assume that if he's using scisssors, he's using them with his left hand, meaning he's most likely to injure his non-throwing hand thumb.
Unless, of course, the Brewer’s clubhouse only stocks right handed scissors. . . !
I am a lefty.
I will say that I do use my right hand to cut with due to the suckiness or lack thereof lefthanded scissors.

I thought we were going on all in this year
Who didn’t put a lefty scissors on the to-do list?

No one ever thinks of the lefties :(

I know a lot of lefthanders, including my brother, that use their right hand to cut with.
Most lefties are really ambidextrous. At least, compared to righties.

If he wants to do it himself, I say let him. He's the one who wears the glove, so he knows how he wants it to fit.
That’s kind of a freak accident. They’re fucking scissors; it’s not like he’s using a bowie knife..
http://www.mlbsoup.com
The point is, he doesn't have to do it himself
And apparently, he agrees…
Narveson was asked if he would let the team’s equipment people handle issues like that from now on.
“Definitely,” he said. "Sometimes you don’t like to ask, and do stuff on your own. I was just messing with some of the strings and trying to fix things up. It’s in between starts, and you’re trying to get your equipment ready. You don’t want to mess with it on game day.
“I threw a side today, had it out and it just kind of happened. I think maybe I’ll have him do it next time.”
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
His next two starts should be Pirates at home and Dodgers at home.
Not a bad couple games to rest Narveson and get Estrada a couple starts.

Who gets the call if he's DL-ed?
Probably a reliever and move Estrada back into the rotation I guess. Frankie de la Cruz would make sense but he’s not on the 40-man.

(de la Cruz would make sense to start as an alternative to Estrada, I mean)

De La Cruz is not on 40 man, would be shocked if he got the call
Is DiFelice healthy?
Otherwise you’d think McClendon, Rivas, Scarpetta, Peralta or DRH (Flores?) are options.
Worried about Estrada not being stretched out and the effects that has on the bullpen

DiFelice is on the DL
Sadly. The best ML-ready starter in the minors is de la Cruz. But indeed he is not on the 40-man. If worse comes to worse I’d imagine McClendon or Rivas would get called up.
Can't do that.
It fixes the problem for Friday, but then the problem comes up Saturday. Marcum would be pitching on short rest if he pitched that day.
(Plus, on a personal note, I’m planning to go to the games on Saturday and Sunday, and I want to see Zack Greinke pitch on Saturday! I’d like to get the combo of Greinke/Marcum this weekend.)

ZiPS RoS
Chris Narveson: 4.60 ERA, 4.21 FIP
Marco Estrada: 4.50 ERA, 3.94 FIP
Frankie de la Cruz: 4.54 ERA, 4.60 FIP

What do you mean?
"We’re here to win, man. All that fighting stuff, that’s for the birds." - Prince Fielder
I think both Estrada and Cruz’s projections are still mainly based on their minor league stats, and although ZiPS has them starting a lower percentage of their games than Narveson (suggesting that they would benefit from better stats) I’m not sure how much ZiPS factors that in, considering they were both actually starters for the bulk of the previous stats its using.
The Estrada and Cruz projections are probably much less reliable (especially considering Cruz was in Japan for a year, IIRC) but they’re still comparable in the sense that they’re from the same system factoring in the same type of numbers.

Fun with Zips

Nothing really
I think ZiPS ignores a lot of things and are fairly useless for aging players, small or erratic samples, LOOGYs, ROOGYs and minor league players.

Need a DL rule interpretation here.
If Narveson goes on the DL, can they backdate it to Sunday (the day after his last start), or do they have to go from the day he was actually injured?

Here's the worst part of the injury
This was the start of 17 games in 16 days. Narveson was needed for this stretch. Here’s what you’re looking at now for starts:
8/9: Marcum
8/10: Wolf
8/11: Gallardo
8/12: Replacement
8/13: Greinke
8/14: Marcum
8/15: Wolf
8/16: Gallardo
8/17: Replacement
8/18: Greinke
8/19: Marcum
8/20: Wolf
8/21: Gallardo
8/22 – Game 1: Replacement #1
8/22 – Game 2: Replacement #2
8/23: Greinke
8/24: Marcum
Can Narveson be back before that 8/22 doubleheader at Pittsburgh? If not, the Brewers are probably going to be scrambling for a starter.
(Also, I’m staying hopeful on the 13th & 14th, because I really want to see Greinke this weekend. I don’t know if I’ll get another chance this season if I don’t see him pitch on Saturday.)
Contributor on Brew Crew Ball, Commissioner of Prognostikeggers, Owner of a broken sarcasm detector
In fact, I counted it out in both scenarios (where he stays on his schedule and where he moves up)
If I don’t see him pitch Saturday, chances are I won’t get to see it this season.

Brutal
So skipping starts obviously isn’t an option. If they backdate the DL trip to Sunday and he’s able to come back in 15 days, though, he’d be back just in time for the doubleheader.

Maybe bring someone up for the start on the 17th
and also have them start game one on the 22nd, then send them down after game 1 and activate another pitcher for game 2 (or maybe even Narv if he’s ready by then)? Do we have minor league options to make that viable?
MiLB options include Heckathorn, Rivas, and De La Cruz. Anyone else a possibility?
Rivas, Peralta, Scarpetta all on the 40-man
I doubt they would bring up Peralta or Scarpetta to start (even though that would be fun). Rivas has been horrible this season.
"We’re here to win, man. All that fighting stuff, that’s for the birds." - Prince Fielder
well, they did bring up Scarpetta earlier this year once already (albiet to warm the bench)
I don’t think we’ll see him either, but that being said, I wouldn’t be shocked if he did get a call up.
I wasn’t aware of the Rivas suck. I haven’t kept up with MiLB like I should be :)
So, healthy pitchers on the 40 man who aren’t on the 25 man:
Zach Braddock
Mark DiFelice
DRH
Mike McClendon
Wily Peralta
Amaury Rivas
Mark Rodgers
Cody Scarpetta
Looking at that list, maybe using Estrada for the starts is the best option after all, and call up someone to take a long relief role.
What's Seth McClung up to?
Screw it, call up Mark Rogers.
"We’re here to win, man. All that fighting stuff, that’s for the birds." - Prince Fielder
:(
Remember when we all were debating whether he or Narve-Dog should be the fifth starter this year?
"We’re here to win, man. All that fighting stuff, that’s for the birds." - Prince Fielder
once again, DiFelice is on the DL
take it from me, especially since even if he wasn’t he hasn’t pitched in quite a long time. I’m actually not sure if he’s done for 2011. I think he may be. Braddock’s still on the restricted list.
Out of all that bunch that’s left, McClendon would be the best long relief choice. Rivas is stretched out but he’s kind of awful. Maybe they should just take their risks with Scarpetta, considering his options situation. Or not.
So weird
official Brewers site has him healthy and on the 40 man roster page, but you look at his fantasy section on his bio, it talks about his shoulder surgery there. I wonder why that isn’t updated on the main 40 man page?
Estrada will be available
My guess is that the Brewers will start stretching out Estrada immediately. They’ll have to bring up a AAA guy that’s stretched out, anyway, so whoever that is will probably get at least two starts while Estrada is working up his arm strength. He could certainly be ready for 6 innings by the doubleheader, if not sooner. Then they’ll be able to have Estrada and minor league Guy both start on the doubleheader day. Minor league Guy goes to the bullpen until Narveson is healthy and Estrada slides into the rotation.

Hopefully he's not out for a month because of a cut thumb.
It could be a good time to lose Narve-Dog for a couple starts. Gives him some rest and the games he’ll miss are against bad teams at Miller Park.
Once you’ve stretched him out or brought somebody up could even do Estrada/Replacement on 8/12, Estrada/Replacement on 8/17, Estrada/Replacement and Narveson on 8/22 (with a roster move between games if needed)
"We’re here to win, man. All that fighting stuff, that’s for the birds." - Prince Fielder
Well lately Estrada has been pretty ineffective...
And at this point he’s not really stretched out at all. So my guess is he won’t be the guy getting the start, otherwise they’ll blow up their bullpen because Marco would likely only go 3-4 innings.
Plus, Dillard really isn’t being used at all, so they’re just all around better off calling up a Peralta or someone like that to spot start.
Grillax people
8 days is asking a lot of a guy to get up to throwing 90 pitches
Unless your name is Greinke, I don’t think they just want you goijg out for 60-75 pitches. I don’t think Estrada will be available for a full start when Narveson’s spot rolls around for at least the second time.

He had a stretch in Interleague where he pitched a lot
66 (BOS), 50 (TB) and 62 (NY). You’d imagine 60 would be close to his limit. I’d guess they start him and have someone who is stretched out ready to take over.

Injuries will happen
The Brewers have been really lucky with their starting rotation this year, overall. They lost Greinke which was bad, but Estrada did an admirable job in his place. Marcum had a shirt start, but didn’t miss a start entirely. In fact, isn’t this going to be the first start missed since Greinke got back?
In terms of a starter getting injured this might be one of the best Who’s and When’s possible.

They’ll probably just platoon Estrada and Dillard for the first game and try to get six or seven innings from the pair and then have Estrada go 5 innings in his second start.
I think if it was just a spot start they might go with a minor league guy, but if you are looking at 2 – 4 starts then you have to go with Estrada.
In the game against Boston that Marcum left after an inning, Estrada came in and threw 4 innings (66 pitches) without being stretched out (3 runs on 4 hits with 2BB and 1K)
Brewers are going to be bring up someone anyway
Why not let Wily make a spot start on Friday and then have him and Estrada swap roles for the next start in the rotation? They’ll need 2 starters for the doubleheader down the road anyway.
