Ron Roenicke, pregame today re: the NL Central race:

“This thing may come down to the last couple of days.”

I take back what I said yesterday: fire this moron, before he Yosts the clubhouse beyond repair.

You don't have a problem

with the manager of your team saying: “Yeah, we’re gonna cough this up”?

We pull our pants up and do our jobs here.

by Rubie Q on Sep 11, 2011 12:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't see it, so maybe I'm missing some inflection in his voice.

But if he said what you typed, it sounds more like “Yeah, it’s a possibility the division might not be decided until the last few days” which, of course, it is. He’s not saying it’s a forgone conclusion or that it’s likely. Just that it could happen. Do you expect him to say “Oh, yeah, we’ve got this in the bag”?

by Noah Jarosh on Sep 11, 2011 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Could be worse

We could be the Red Sox choking away their playoff place to the Rays (They are already 3-0 down in the 1st)

by Saltire on Sep 11, 2011 1:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Rays finish out the season against the Orioles, Red Sox, the Yankees, the Blue Jays, and the Yankees again.

The Red Sox get the Blue Jays, Rays, Orioles, Yankees, Orioles.

The Rays will have to take care of business in the next series against the Sox, otherwise they’ll have a rough time catching up.

Yes?

by Rubie Q on Sep 11, 2011 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

He's kinda been saying that all year

It’s just a stereotypical auto response to the media. Plus saying “We’re gonna cough this up” would cause clubhouse problems and managing the clubhouse is his specialty. So I’m sure he know what he’s doing/saying or he’s just relaying the thoughts of the players.

Is it blowing in or something? The Brewers can’t get anything into the stands. They don’t score many runs when all they can do is hit long fly outs. It’s like having an entire lineup of Kotsays.

The explanation is pretty simple

His slider has been entirely ineffective this year. Hitters have been teeing off on it all year long. All they have to do is wait for a bad pitch and crush it. No mystery there.

by ecocd on Sep 11, 2011 3:00 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I think all this team needs is some sort of a break - anything, really.

A seeing-eye RBI single. A bad call that goes their way. An LOLDEFENSE play from the opponent. A line drive with RISP that’s not right at a defender. We haven’t seen anything like that for at least a week.

It can’t stay that way for 14 more games. It just can’t.

by Cheeseandcorn on Sep 11, 2011 2:57 PM CDT reply actions

With one out and a man on third

The Brewers ripped a line drive to right and launched a fly ball 370 feet. That’s more than enough to score a run 90% of the time, even when your pitcher makes a boneheaded baserunning move.

by Cheeseandcorn on Sep 11, 2011 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Otherwise there seems to be alot warning track outs

by Saltire on Sep 11, 2011 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Lots of warning-track outs

And lots of line drives right at people.

As I mentioned above, the Brewers are 23-35 on line drives over this losing streak. Their opponents are 26-30.

by Cheeseandcorn on Sep 11, 2011 3:15 PM CDT up reply actions

And that is what I've noticed.

They are hitting the pitchers hard, but they are just not falling in. I mean it sucks we are losing, but this is a silver lining in that I think these are the types of hits that will eventually drop in for hits.

That dog just won't hunt.

by Bush League All Star on Sep 11, 2011 3:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Both

They’re facing good pitchers, but they’re still a much better hitting team than what they’ve been over the past week.

by Cheeseandcorn on Sep 11, 2011 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Here is my case for this...

I think Fielder is struggling mightily (and I would like to see more people chew him for that). Braun is doing okay, but not enough as he should if he is a star of this team. Put the team on your back bro!

The rest of the team, I think there have been a lot of players who have been hitting the balls hard at people. I think if I were to do a split 35 pitching to 65 struggling. I would like to see your guys splits if you are saying both.

All of us were new once, some not that long ago. What I’m saying is, people aren’t going to have a lot of patience if you’re only talking about how horrible the Brewers are, how they’ll never come back, etc. There are other people on this board who complain, but there’s almost no one who does nothing but complain, or who doesn’t use facts to back it up.

We’re OK with people complaining when we know that’s not all they do. But so far, that’s pretty much all you’ve done. You’ve got to branch out a bit. Explore the space. No, really, explore the space.

Brewers miss Weeks and get a bit unlucky.

Whenever I get pissy I go looking at numbers. I was hoping to see that with Weeks out, the offense was terrible. It turns out, with Weeks out and Yuni terrible, the offense is terrible. It’s really the danger of the “Stars and Scrubs” approach.

Hart started heating up to his normal self at the plate starting May 9 (His first start was April 27):
Mar 31, 2011 to May 8, 2011 Brewers scored an average of 3.8 runs per game

The Brewers had a full lineup with Weeks, Morgan, Braun, Fielder, Hart until Weeks’ injury:
May 10, 2011 to Jul 27, 2011 = 4.5 R/G

Weeks went down on July 28, Yuni was hot from Jul 18, 2011 to Aug 13, 2011 in Weeks’ absence (for the most part):
Jul 18, 2011 to Aug 13, 2011 = 4.7 R/G

Yuni went back to his old terrible self starting Aug 14, 2011 and the Brewers offense suffered likewise:
Aug 14, 2011 to Sep 10, 2011 = 4.1 R/G

Over the past 7 days, the Brewers hit distribution has been nearly identical to their season averages which means they’ve mostly been the victim of good defense and bad luck.
Season LD% = 19.3%; Last 7 game 19.7%.
Season HR/FB = 11.5%; Last 7 games 9.7%
Season BABIP = .294; Last 7 games .264

They’ve been hitting line drives, but they’ve been falling below season average.

Have the Brewers simply not been clutch? Depends upon what you think. They went 1-for-13 w/RISP against Halladay which was rough. Overall, though we can’t blame it on the Brewers not being clutch, they simply haven’t been hitting.

In September, the Brewers have gone 20-for-84 w/RISP for .238 average. Overall .247 BA during that span.
Since the beginning of the Cardinals series, they’ve been 7-for-34 for a .206 BA w/RISP. Overall .216 BA during that span.

So there’s been a little bad luck, but really they’re just not hitting well lately and that’s likely directly related to missing Weeks and facing some tough pitching. Taken in context, there’s no reason to worry about the rest of the regular season with regard to staying ahead of St. Louis in the NL Central. Their luck will improve and their offense will improve as Weeks gets healthy. The 6 game lead should give enough time for that to happen. It may not happen in time to get back ahead of the Diamondbacks, however, as they have the same puffball schedule down the stretch as the Brewers.

It’s worth noting that the Cardinals latest streak has moved them within 4.5 games of the wild card. There’s a chance, albeit unlikely, that the wild card now comes out of the Central. This would mean the Cardinals play the Phillies in the NLDS and the Brewers play the Diamondbacks with home field advantage in play. In that sense, it makes sense to cheer against the Braves and cheer for the Cardinals – just not so much the Cardinals pass the Brewers.
