Don Money is not a big Gamelfan.
MILWAUKEE -- Mat Gamel's Triple-A manager pulled no punches in assessing the former top prospect's big league future, saying Gamel must make some fundamental changes if he is to break through with the Brewers in 2012.

If this was a one-time thing I wouldn't be so concerned.
but it seems like everything we hear from the Brewers front office regarding Gamel is bad.

Doesn't it all come from Money though?
Haven’t heard anybody else criticize him.

Why does Keith Moon care about Mat Gamel?

God, could you imagine Money ...
… speaking to the media every day as a MLB manager?
Dude has no filter, and will happily shit all over the dudes in his doghouse.
I would LOVE to hear his thoughts on Yuni.
It would be interesting wouldn't it?

Wow.
We all knew about the locker incident and guessed at the rest. What I’m surprised to hear is “he can play 1st, but can he hit enough? That’s the big if.” I assumed it was the other way around; that they thought he’d hit eventually if he got to play every day, but that he’d be an albatross defensively.
Honestly, if they’re still questioning his bat, I don’t see how they can have much, if any, hope for him being an every day player at some point in the future.

Money questioning his bat doesn't mean the organization is questioning his bat.
Though the fact that he didn’t get a September call-up is a little interesting.

Depends what they think of Money, I guess.
I’ve always gotten the impression that they take Money’s opinion very seriously.

maybe it's questioning
if his bat is good enough to play first base. There’s a lot of not defensively agile guys at first (which Gamel would fit in with) but with lots of power (not really gamel) and good OBPs (could be gamel). In other words, it might be “easy” to replace him.
by PagsBrewCrew on Sep 11, 2011 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions
That's a good point, and an angle to the comment I hadn't thought of.
I think his bat will be fine if he’s ever given a full season, but you’re right in that even if he comes in slightly above his MLE’s it won’t be extraordinary production out of the 1b position.

I think Gamel needs to work with somebody other than Money.
I don’t think Money’s approach is working with him.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
I think Gamel needs to be in another organization.
And I’m a Gamel fan. This isn’t working. It doesn’t do anyone any good for him to sit down in AAA for years getting ripped by his manager on an annual basis. It’s time to move him, get what you can, and move on.

I agree with TSSC and nullacct.
I think we should package them up and see what we can get for them.
I have no concept.
A change of scenery will probably do him some good.

Meh. And Bob Brenly despises Ryan Braun.
Just because he’s in a position of authority doesn’t necessarily mean we should believe what he says. It sounds like Money has a personal issue with Gamel for whatever reason.

Or it sounds like Gamel is lazy
However you want to read it I guess.

Either way, it's a dick move to publicly criticize him. Making me thing there's a personal issue here too.

I'm not sure how you can call it that personal
Same article he criticized Gindl’s weight, said Peralta and Fiers need to prove they weren’t flukes and that McClendon sucks.
He’s a dick no doubt, but its not like he’s singling out Gamel here

His goal is clearly to light a fire under them.
I will assume that these are conversations that were already had with the player. The fact that nothing has been done about them is why he’s calling them out in the press.

He wasn't calling out Peralta..
All he said is that he needs to prove himself at every level.

I'd actually agree with him on Peralta
And I love Peralta.
Also, Gindl is really 5’9 and over 200 pounds? Yikes.

That's not really that big if he's got a lot of muscle.
I weighed about that much in high school and had basically no fat on me. I’m only 5’ 8"
I have no concept.
He's got a Kirby Puckett-type build
I think his problem is that he’s put on weight as the season progressed.

One argument for bringing him up
is that he’d get to work with more coaches.
Cooper82 is arguing that Money might be the problem. Getting him up with the more extended major league staff might have helped the issue.
To argue with myself, he was with major league staff all spring training – fat lot of good it did him.
I’d agree that the Brewers are high on Money as a coach. I’m pretty sure he’s the only minor league coach that they brough to the majors after the minor league season was over. And he’s been “called up” in previous seasons.
Additionally, he’s worked with a lot of our current stars and not one of them has garnered the attention/derision the way Gamel has. Hard to say it’s Money’s fault, not Gamel’s.

Hasn't the AAA manager been called up more or less every season in recent memory?
The organization wasn’t high on Frank Kremblas, for example, but I know he was with the team in September a few times. I wouldn’t be shocked if that’s in the AAA manager’s contract.

Since most of the September call-ups are from AAA
It may help that they have atleast 1 familiar face on the coaching staff. I guess that getting called up in September is a bit different to other times of the season when there are several new faces coming up at the same time.
Kind of.
Cooper82 is arguing that Money might be the problem.
Kind of. I am not sure there really is a problem. Money even said Gamel was playing well in the field and hitting well at the plate. Money’s problem is how Gamel carries himself. So the guy is a little different. They have been together for the better part of 4 seasons now. I think they are tired of each other. I guess if there is a problem I am not sure what the problem even is.
Not all players react well to the same approach. Money’s approach may work well for 99% of players and may rub the other 1% the wrong way.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
Maybe
But it seems like he’s had incidents where Money wasn’t involved, like in September with the Brewers and in MLB Spring Training.

Was that the one where he played most of the year with a hurt toe and they sent him home?
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
Newsflash: Don Money is a curmudgeon
He seems down on everybody.
And I love him for it.
Probably says more about me than him.

Gamel's MLE
I posted this on twitter, but here is a quick recap. Gamel’s MLE for this year comes out to .273/.323/.451. His OPS would have ranked 16th out of 21 ML 1B with 450 at bats. His numbers project to being pretty similar to Mitch Moreland of Texas. He wouldn’t be god-awful, but there are certainly serious doubts as to whether he projects to be a plus hitter as a 1B.
I am not sure that I would be terribly excited about a 1B that hits .270 with 22 homers and just a .325 OPB.

Yeah.
Now that Pags set me straight above, this is pretty obviously what Money meant, and it’s something to be concerned about given the need to fill the 1b position next year.

i admit I haven't looked and I suppose I could but I feel lazy
but what other FA 1b are there that would be a good fit for the crew. Carlos Pena is the only one that comes to mind and obviously not including someone like Pujols. …Maybe Julio Franco?
I was disappointed with the lack of hookers but the pancakes were delightful
According to Cot's
Here’s a list of the FA 1B after this season…
Lance Berkman
Russell Branyan
Jorge Cantu
Prince Fielder
Brad Hawpe
Eric Hinske
Ross Gload
Nick Johnson
Derrek Lee
Xavier Nady
David Ortiz
Lyle Overbay
Carlos Pena
Albert Pujols
Jim Thome

Sure, especially considering what they have now.
Not many other options that don’t involve a lot of money, though.

MLE's aren't the most accurate thing in the world, though.
Not that there’s a better option..

Not to mention
He stopped hitting LHP this year with a .665 OPS.
At the very least, they need to get a RHB to platoon with him next year. Hopefully DM is able to pull something off in the offseason, or else the offense is going to take a substantial step back next year.
