Brewers Ride Four-Run Third To 5-1 Win Over Cubs, Drop Magic Number To 3
W: Shaun Marcum (13-7)
L: Randy Wells (7-5)
HR: Starlin Castro (10)
MVP: Shaun Marcum (+.286 pitching, +.043 batting for +.329 total)
LVP: Casey McGehee (-.039)
Win Expectancy Graph and Star of the Game Voting
Given the offense's struggles lately, it makes sense that it'd take an unlikely event to get them back on track.
There was one out and no one on base in the third when Shaun Marcum lined a double to left, and four of the next five Brewers picked up hits as the Crew plated four and took a lead they would not relinquish.
Marcum did his part on the mound too, pitching eight innings for the first time since May and allowing one run on just five hits, walking none and striking out seven.
Prince Fielder drew two walks tonight but went 0-for-3, snapping his hitting streak at 12 games. Nyjer Morgan was on base three times with a pair of singles and a walk, stole a base and scored two runs.

I like it when we do good things.

Or take very small bites so this one lasts.

Just a guess.
Should one of Marcum's WPA numbers be hitting?

If this race were close at all
I’d be so pissed at that team. They simply can’t lose.
Instead, I just think, “Have fun thinking about how bittersweet this run is next weekend, while you’re watching the Brewers in the playoffs.”

I'd rather they make the playoffs than the Braves, to be honest

I don't know.
At this point I think I’d rather play the scuffling Braves than the D-Backs
The Braves will have Tommy Hanson back for the playoffs
And I’d rather play the Cardinals than them any day.

That Cards rookie's slide into third and enthusiastic pointing into the air
Looked pretty Nyjer Morgan-esque.
I fully expect all kinds of hand-wringing by the St. Louis media … or not.
Against the D-backs
3-0 in the seventh.

That's crazy
since we all know that Daniel Hudson is the best pitcher the D-Backs have

What are the opinions of resting players?
Of course, this would not happen until we clinched, and we have a safe lead over Arizona (3-4 games). I think some of the starters are beginning to look a little worn down. I am looking at less Yuni, less Casey (those two for obvious reasons), less Lucroy (catchers get an ass kicking throughout the year), and maybe a starter here and there.
Bring guys out if we are winning, and let the new guys take over. I understand there needs to be a balance in constant play time for starters, but I wouldn’t mind seeing them fresh for the playoffs.

Otherwise no
I don’t really like it, personally.

Winning or losing, I think we should give them some 6-7 inning games.
But not take them out for the whole day.

They'll be flirting with "rusty" as is
I agree that they get 2-3 PA for the rest of the season. They’ve had two off days last week and they’ll have Sept 29 and Sept 30 off.
That is, they will if they can win 3 more games this season seeing as how the Cardinals apparently can’t lose anymore. It would be so much fun to watch them go on a huge run and fall 1 game short at the end of the season. Even better, for a 1-game playoff with the Braves and lose in a heartbreaking 10th inning.
Phils fans echo those sentiments…quite obvious that Philly and Milwaukee are the 2 best NL teams and IMO, it would be a shame if they had to play in the NLDS
4/5 and counting

The Crew's lead
over the snakes is as big as Boston’s lead over the Rays!
Brewers:
5.5 games ahead of the Uptight Citizens Brigade
3 games ahead of the Braves for the Wild Card Safety Net
2 games ahead of Arizona to avoid the Phils in the 1st round
He needs to eat pine
I’m sick of his 0fers. Not moving runners over and rarely getting clutch knocks. Betancourt gets a ton of flack out here, but Casey has easily been the worst player on the field for the duration of their season. Why is his spot so secure? BENCH MCG
Casey has easily NOT been the worst player on the field
Betancourt is fielding a robust -8.1 UZR/150 while giving a wOBA of 0.272.
Casey has a 8.7 UZR/150 with a 0.276 wOBA.
I don’t disagree that Casey has been bad, but it’s just false that Betancourt hasn’t been worse.
Greinke: "It’s not about the guacamole itself. I just don’t want to let them win."
Woah, Yuni's defense is actually way up.
"We’re here to win, man. All that fighting stuff, that’s for the birds." - Prince Fielder
False
Betancourt has been the worst. McGehee has just been on par with him as of late.

Overall WAR
McGehee loses some value in baserunning while Yuni actually goes up a little. Casey is at 0.6 WAR; Yuni is at 0.2 WAR. Casey is the 2nd worse qualifying thirdbaseman in the league (so it’s not a lately situation) and Yuni is the worst shorstop. The Brewers are lucky to have such great outfield defense to negate the wide open spaces on the left side of the infield.
