Today In Brewer History: Bill Spiers Attacked

Stay connected for news and updates

On this day in 1999, the Astros scored seven unanswered runs in the final two innings to beat the Brewers 9-4. The results were overshadowed by an ugly incident, however, as a fan ran onto the field and attacked Astros outfielder Bill Spiers before the bottom of the sixth inning.

Thankfully, Spiers' Astro teammates ran to his aid and were able to pull the assailant off of him before the incident escalated. Spiers received whiplash in the melee but was otherwise unharmed, and remained in the game for an inning before being lifted in the seventh. He had played the first six years of his career in Milwaukee from 1989-94.

Spiers assailant, a South Beloit man named Berley Visgar, was eventually sentenced to 90 days in jail. This story has more on him and the incident.
