Brewers 6, Pirates 4

W: LaTroy Hawkins (3-1)
L: Jared Hughes (0-1)
SV: Axford (46)

HR: Prince Fielder (36,37, 38) Weeks (20)

MVP: Fielder (.651)
LVP: Hart (-.196)

Win Expectancy Graph

It was the Prince Fielder show tonight as he had his first-ever three home run game. His first tied the game at 1 and his other two were go-ahead home runs. The three now have him tied with Matt Kemp for the league-lead at 38.

Not to be outdone, Rickie Weeks hit his first home run since returning from the DL and it was spectacular - hitting off the middle of the glass windows on the NYCE Club. At 470 feet, it was the longest ever home run at Miller Park by a right-handed batter.

Despite being in the batting title race, I thought it was impressive that Ryan Braun wasn't pressing at the plate and instead took two walks.

Randy Wolf stuggled, lasting just 5.2 innings while giving up four runs on nine hits. He walked in a run with the bases loaded before getting pulled. Kam Loe got out of the bases loaded jam and then LaTroy Hawkins, K-Rod and John Axford each recorded a scoreless inning.

The save for Axford tied him for the NL lead.

The win gave this team 95 for the season, tying franchise record.

As of this writing, Dodgers and Diamondbacks were scoreless, so the win puts the Magic Number at 1, pending that outcome.

Yeah, that's the problem

If you have a player hit four homeruns, it’s usually pretty likely you’re leading by a good amount.

Then again, when Carlos Delgado hit four HR, the Blue Jays only won 10-8, I think, and Delgado’s WPA was just over .100.

Phils fan here…first of all congrats! You guys surprised that they announced Gallardo as the game 1 starter already? If the D-Backs win tonight, I would think they would pitch Gallardo to capture home field advantage and start Greinke in Game 1 at home. I also hope they do this to eliminate anyway for the Phils and Brewers, the 2 best teams, to meet in the DS.

At one point one of the Vegas oddsmakers had the Packers as 13 point favorites, which seemed like too much to me. The Packers still have too many questions on defense to have a line that big.

It's at Camp Randall

Where the badgers get at least a 4 point bump (more than other teams, like UW basketball).

The true line is about 3-4 to the badgers, and people are betting hard on the badgers to cover, so the line moved to 10 from 8.

FanGraphs should consider a venue for a Gallery Night... they could even serve a cake with a Win Expectancy Chart of the 7/7/11 Brewers' game etched in the frosting, and 7-up. Oh, yeah - and t-shirts that say "SABR-Friday." I'm totally there.

The Dodgers bullpen did a good job in August, though...

…at Miller Park. They helped us get the runs the L.A. starters didn’t want to give up. Especially some of those home runs. So I kind of like them for that bit of business.

Still a lot on the line for the last day of the regular season
  1. seed in both leagues is still up for grabs. Milwaukee and Texas are in the same situation, both have one-game leads entering the last day, but the team below them has the tiebreaker.

Also both wild cards are still up for grabs and currently tied in both leagues.

Why do people always seem to post what I'm going to say seconds before I post it?

I’m not a slow typer. I think I just overthink what I’m thinking about and by the time I stop thinking and start typing what I was thinking about, the stuff I was thinking about what thought about by someone else and transferred from thoughts to text before I could transfer what I was thinking about to text.

Going into the bottom of the 10th, it was 99.1%

At it’s worst, it was 99.9% with two outs and no one on base.

Fangraphs has him, not updated, at 5.0.

Look back tomorrow and see what it is, subtract 5.0, and you’ll have your answer.

by Noah Jarosh on Sep 28, 2011 1:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I know, I was just perusing Fangraphs and I was wondering.

Braun has also closed the fWAR gap with Kemp. He now trails him by just .7 WAR. I guess I was wondering how much of that gap could potentially be closed in one game if one player has a great game and the other has a horrible game.

by Zorakathura on Sep 28, 2011 1:40 AM CDT up reply actions

If your worrying about WAR deciding the NL MVP... don't Kemp wont win because of WAR...

That being said, I think if Prince can finish with the most HR’s in the NL and Braun the highest BA I think Braun can solidify his MVP candidacy… as weird as it sounds 38 HR’s for Kemp on an MVP ballot don’t seem as impressive if its #2 in the NL instead of #1… At least that’s how I think a lot of sports writers will feel…

So glad I didn't watch last night's Diamondbacks-Dodgers game - the D-Backs are starting to annoy the crap out of me

Their second-order W-L is 10 games lower than their actual W-L. That’s essentially 10 wins of luck! No one else in the NL other than the Pirates has more than +4.3.

Interesting

They have definitely played a bit over their heads. I have nothing against that team and it would be nice to say ‘hey good job’ this year. But that’s only if they would just accept their fate as the 3 seed already! Argghhh.

I went to this awesome game last night, but have a question for those who watched it on TV

How close was that play in the first inning when the umpire called McCutchen safe at 1B?

He looked out by at least a step when I saw it live.
