Ian Desmond in 2012?
Seeing Yuniesky Betancourt come up to the plate with the bases loaded tonight, and just KNOWING he was going to hit into a double play, on the first pitch, no less, got me thinking.
One of my friends' friends wrote this blog post:

and it seems well thought out. Only thing I might say is, would it be worth it to offer Carlos Gomez for Desmond straight up? Gomez, I think we might all agree, is a frustrating player -- has the tools, but can he put it all together?
Morgan's been solid, and Logan Schafer probably deserves a spot with the big club next year too. AND I know from all the Denard Span / BJ Upton rumors that the Nats really want a new CF. (Plus, if Hairston stays in 2012 he could be the RH platoon mate.)
What do you guys think?

Personally I hope we can do beter than Desmond.
Assuming we’re not going to have Prince we should be able to go after an impact player. Maybe even Reyes. Adding Reyes to this team might actually replace Prince’s production albeit in a different way.
On the other hand, I would take damn near anyone over Betancourt.

Reyes will be a Type A free agent
With the mostly horrific farm system the Brewers have, I wouldn’t want them to lose a draft pick even though Reyes is a high-quality SS.

Too much money for Reyes, unfortunately.

There isn't enough in the payroll
for either.

They offered Prince over 100 mil. I think they have more room than they're saying personally.
For your health!
Oh no
I’ve got the spreadsheet. I’ve posted it before. I will again after my trip this week. But you’ll see. They aren’t going over $90 MM to begin a season. I will guarantee you that. 100%. I’ll wager my entire year’s earnings on it.

I'd like to see the spreadsheet. Do you know what their commitments are next year roughly?
For your health!
Thanks!
They don’t have a ton committed at this point and I don’t see a lot of big Arbitration awards in there. They’re gonna need to restock the bullpen though.
If Mark A is willing to push the payroll near 90 mil I think they could pick up some nice pieces.
I have no concept.
Or Greinke.
They could trade Greinke and save payroll while restocking the farm.
Not saying they should… just saying.

Well, they could.
Greinke hasn’t delivered like he has the potential to, and Wolf has played above his head, and they’ve had about the same resutls. I’d sell Wolf high and keep Greinke forever.
I'm pretty sure
that they offered that contract before they gave the extensions to Braun (most recent one), Weeks and Hart.
I don’t think the money is there anymore.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
This post gives me hope.

Desmond
is well below average with the bat (wRC+ of 88 and 73 in 2010 and 2011 respectively) and below average with the glove (-10.6 runs in his career at SS). That said, his reputation is much better, and I really don’t think Gomez would get it done. With some money to play with, they Brewers have to look to significantly improve at SS on one side of the ball at least.
Yuni’s not coming back for $6mil next year no matter what, so bringing up the salary issue here doesn’t make sense. They’ll buy him out for $2mil and consider it a sunk cost. Desmond will be cheap, yes (not arb eligible yet), and we can consider that, but we have to consider the larger context of the payroll, marginal wins per dollar, etc. What I mean is, if we just want to tred water at SS in terms of production while spending the minimum to fill the position, Desmond would be fine. I’d like to see if we can improve. Resigning Hairston as a stopgap would not be bad, but not ideal either. I’d bring him back as a supersub, sure.
Alternatively, there’s a chance Marco Scutaro becomes available as a free agent, or could be available in a trade (though I’m not sure what the Red Sox could possibly want from us). Even at 35, Scutaro is a lot more likely to post a wRC+ above 100 (in that he’s actually done it before, including this year, unlike Yuni or Desmond) not to mention be at least neutral with the glove. If it becomes a possibility, I’d be interested in bringing Scutaro back to the Brewers organization in 2012.
Yuck
he stinks, and picking up the Nats garbage is not a recipe for success.
Brewers:
7 games ahead of the Uptight Citizens Brigade
1/2 game ahead of the Braves for the Wild Card Safety Net
1/2 game ahead of Arizona to avoid the Phils in the 1st round
Disagree
I’ve followed Morgan somewhat closely since he broke into the bigs. This is exactly what I’ve expected of him, save for the .300+ batting average.
The only rally animal I ever want to see has a name, and that name is Gorman, dammit.

Yes.
I thought it was foolish of the Rats & the Nats to give up on him. They just didn’t have anybody that seemed to care enough to unlock the treasure.

Rollins might be worth a shot
His hitting has been below his career average the past three seasons, but his defense seems to be still good. He’s 32, so while not someone you want to sign to a long-term deal, he should be useful over the next couple seasons.
My guess is that he’d be a distant #2 behind Reyes in the FA market.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I would think so, and I would think we could afford him.
After reading the comments by Don Money about Gamel, I’m going to be pretty surprised if he’s our first baseman next season so I’m curious to see how they address that as well.
I have no concept.
