Melvin: Corey Hart will be asked to play some first base.
He was on The Mike Heller Show today and said that, while Mat Gamel will get an opportunity to win the first base job, Hart will be asked to play something like 30 games there.

Well that seems like a bad idea.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
Classic Melvin
this was something a lot of folks had suggested, and Melvin kept shooting it down.
I think its ridiculous to have a rotating door at 1B throughout the season, but I don’t run the team.

I'm sure people are going to crap on this
But given the fact that the Brewers have a ton of good OF (especially if they sign Aoki) this makes a lot of sense.

Anyone should crap on it
If you want Hart to play 1B, put him at 1B and get someone else to play RF. Why bother putting anyone else there?

Hart at 1B would probably make us better on defense.
Mostly because we would get Hart out of the outfield. Would probably make our offense worse though. I think Gamel will be a better hitter than Morgan, Gomez or Aoki.(or unknown old outfield guy)
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
Because you have players with pronounced platoon splits

Morgan and possibly Gamel given his 2011 splits
LHB: Braun/Gomez/Aoki, Hart
RHB: Braun/Morgan/Hart, Gamel

I have a really hard time thinking that's going to happen
let alone that it should happen.
I mean, a Gamel/Hall platoon at 3B 3 years ago would have produced the best WAR at the position, too.

Melvin also said earlier in the off-season that Hart would not be asked to play any 1B

Also, I think I should add
Hart is the 2nd best OF on this team, regardless of what happens to Aoki. I don’t think saying that there has to be room for other, equally as talented OF is accurate.

Aoki hits left handed as well.
Gamel had pretty minor splits in the minors. He hit LHP pretty well. Wish I could find a link.

Yeah the organizations really seems to have little faith in Gamel.
On the other hand it is only 30ish games of frustration. We will see if this is Kotsay in CF frustrating or Loe vs left handed power hitters frustrating.
I really want to see what Gamel can do starting full time.

To be fair, they're going into the season expecting Gamel to plate 130 games at a position last occupied by Prince Fielder

Looks like the org's undermining of Mat Gamel is getting an early start
My god. They usually wait until Spring Training to get in their first digs.
I’m not saying he should be handed the job outright, but all the org seems to do is create an atmosphere in which he’s expected to fail / ripped on rather than nurtured as a prospect. Gamel has had his issues, but he’s the best hitting prospect in our whole minor league system, and we kind of NEED him to be good this year if we’re going to contend.

It’s unclear whether he heard this on the interview or it’s pure speculation:
Mat Gamel will be the everyday 1B, but Hart could be his “platoon partner” and give Gamel days off against tough lefties
Corey Hart hit .333/.430/.624 against lefties last year. Mat Gamel hit .213/.280/.375 against lefties in Triple-A last year.
Great question. Could be Gindl. Could be Gomez (CF) & Morgan (RF). RT @mph343 @BerniesCrew Who plays RF versus tough lefty when Gamel sits?

I'm not talking about pity playing time in the regular season.
I’m talking about a good climate in which he can compete for the job in ST, and feel comfortable about his role on the team.
You don’t think the org’s endless mindfucking of Gamel has hurt his performance / drive?
The best possible team includes a very good Gamel at 1B, my feeling is that a Gamel who’s not looking over his shoulder the whole time will perform better. So yes, part of the objective over the next few months should be to care about Gamel’s feelings.

Just a few examples of guys who were just given a roster spot and pushed their way into significant roles or playing time. It didn’t affect their performance (could argue it helped them), why are we so worried about Gamel, who had great minor league numbers not being able to handle being a MLB baseball player and the stuff that comes with it?

I don't think you have any idea whether it has even affected him,
let alone hurt him. Often, when people actually have something to compete against, they perform better. And of course there is always the possibility that the people who get to watch every game and practice might have good reasons for not entrusting a starting job to Gamel… but that couldn’t be…

He seemed pretty athletic when he played for us. Seemed to have decent instincts as well as a strong arm. Shouldn’t be worse than Hart in RF.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
Or whomever
I get the value in platoon splits. I also get the “it should be about the team winning, not the guy’s ego” argument. But part of me also feels like there is a big mental component for a guy who knows he’s playing this position every day, and its his position.
The fact that the team seems to be ready to write off Gamel already is odd considering they stuck with McGehee for almost the entire year in 2011.

I have a problem with it because every player has bad streaks.
I fear Gamel having a bad streak to start the year and getting banished to the manager’s doghouse most of the year. He isn’t a vet so I doubt he gets the benefit of the doubt. I have faith in Gamel. I don’t have faith in the manager or the organization, but I want to.

I don’t understand the sentiment that he has a personal grudge against Gamel or doesn’t want him to succeed or whatever. You don’t think he wants a league-minimum everyday 1B?
Apparently they are concerned about Gamel as a 1B vs. LHP. We can disagree with that maybe, but it’s not because Melvin dislikes Gamel or doesn’t want him to get a fair shot.

In that case they are taking away
playing time and screwing with him even more. He should be given the 1B job(barring injury or completely crapping his pants in ST) and left alone there for at least 2 months. I don’t think sporadic playing time is the best way to see what he can do. I am concerned that a slow start will lead to the Brewers going with a bad long term strategy.

I fail to understand how giving what ammounts to a rookie 132 games to play first base
is undermining him in any way shape or form. Especially when the guy he is going to share a little time with already has another position to play. If Harts starts hitting the crap out of the ball and Gamel does alright then there is no issue.
The only problem will occur for Gamel if
A) 4 outfielders are so productive that you cant possibly not play them (unlikely)
B) He doesn’t perform at all, which means the team needs to move on.

Thanks for posting this for me.
The 130-game range is certainly low for a 1B (last year 22 teams had a 1B that played in more than 132 games), but it’s not entirely unheard of, platoon or no.
If they sign Aoki, they’ll have 5 starting quality (assuming Gomez keeps up his stellar’ defense) OF for 3 OF spots. A veritable embarrassment of riches for an outfield. It gives the Brewers a fantastic option for playing Aoki 50 games in Braun’s spot, but still give time to all of the outfielders befitting their skill level. It also gives them a great insurance policy on the inevitable injuries.
If they sign Aoki, this would be a fantastic move.
Did anybody else listen to the interview?
I’m not sure where this info came from, because in the interview all Melvin says is that Gamel is the 1B and will be given every chance to succeed, and then at the very end the interviewer asks if there is a backup incase Gamel struggles and Melvin said they might talk to Hart about playing 1B…
I didn’t hear anything about giving Hart 30 games or whatnot.
(Also, Melvin finally admitted that Yuniesky Betancourt has no range.)

"Aw, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. Forfty percent of all people know that."
Thanks for having me listen to the entire interview
He talks about Caleb Gindl having a chance to play LF in the big leagues this year. If Aoki isn’t signed, it sounds like Melvin has every intention of letting Gindl show what he’s got at the major league level while Braun is sitting.
I’m also very pleased he admitted Betancourt has no range. He also completely nonchalantly mentioned K-Rod will be with the team all year so it sounds like there’s still no indication from him that they’ll be looking to trade him.
Doesn't sound like he has faith in Braun's ability to beat the rap
I’m wondering what the odds are that Braun was actually juicing
Mark Attanasio is the best.
