I'm pretty happy about this.
Wonder if it leaves enough money in the budget to sign Aoki.
Now that's great tasting chicken!

I suppose it depends on what limit Mark A. has put on the payroll
Signing K-Rod for this makes the payroll close to $95million to the estimate in the Fanposts.
I guess the limit would be either 95 or 100 so hopefully there is some room left for Aoki.
They always build in buffer room for mid-season acquisitions and estimated bonus payments. So they might be at their breaking point.
True
I think that whatever happens any extra spending this year will probably beyond what the break-even point is for the Brewers.
IIRC it was said on a thread here that the Brewers made a loss in 2010 with a payroll at $90million. I know that revenues will probably be higher this year but I’m not sure that it will cover the increase in spending.
It is to Mark Anastasio’s credit that the team is willing to spend anything approaching $100million to ensure that there is a competitive team playing next season.
Oh, I think they'll be way past break-even.
I think the “breaking point” is the amount of loss Mark A. is willing to swallow, or carry forward into future years (presumably when payroll will be down and net profits will be up).
Plus, 2010 sucked.

Wow
I have no idea why Boras let K-Rod accept it… unless he really thought that the Brewers had a good chance of winning their argument (that he should be paid as a setup guy, not a closer).
8 mil only?
Counsell already working his negotiation magic.

Jon Heyman reported that there are performance bonuses that K-Rod can earn as well.
Don’t know what those are.
Contributor on Brew Crew Ball, Commissioner of Prognostikeggers, Owner of a broken sarcasm detector
IIRC
Performance bonuses for relievers are usually based on games finished. There might also be bonuses based on awards in the contract.
Also, appearances
I think IP or appearances are much more likely. He and Boras must know that he’s a set up man and not a closer on the Brewers.
I’m pretty much happy with this contract. I think it’s fair value if he can keep up his elite performance in the setup role. With KRod-Axford at the back of the lineup, the Brewers aren’t going to blow more than 6 or 7 8th inning leads all season.
I wouldn't be surprised if Boras worked in something for games finished, though.
That way, he can try to get his salary up closer to the closer level if he does end up in that role.

If he does end up in that role, the Brewers aren't doing well
and he’ll be traded midseason. I suppose it could make sense to have a games finished bonus in case he’s traded.
Not necessarily
No one likes to talk about it, but injury is always a possibility.
Contributor on Brew Crew Ball, Commissioner of Prognostikeggers, Owner of a broken sarcasm detector
Cheap!
I cannot believe he took that much. Its amazing. Happy days!
Yes, rumor rumor…but a friend of mine has a friend (yes, 2 degrees of seperation) who works at a mortgage company that deals with luxery apartments and Fielder’s representatives have contacted them regarding a 1-year lease in MKE for his family.

Or you know...
He’s going to sign with a different NL Central team and wants to have a place to stay when he’s in town.
Random thought here
A recent study conducted in the Facebook area has shown that the average degrees of separation between any two random people is around 4.7 now (round up to 5). Back in the 1960s, it was 5.5 (round up to 6).
I just find it a little funny to think that all of us has a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend who is a friend of a Brewers player.
(Also, that’s a weird word…friend. I just had one of those moments where I was wondering if I had spelled it right.)

Not surprisingly, a lot of arbitration deals are being resolved before the arbitration figures are exchanged.
The deals I’ve seen so far today (in addition to K-Rod):
Francisco Liriano
Mike Adams
David Murphy
Cole Hamels
Jordan Zimmerman
Michael Bourn
Mike Pelfrey
Jeff Karstens
Jack Hannahan
Andre Ethier
Joe Thatcher
Carlos Villanueva
Mitch Maier
Juan Carlos Oviedo (formerly Leo Nunez)
That’s just what I saw in the last two hours.
Contributor on Brew Crew Ball, Commissioner of Prognostikeggers, Owner of a broken sarcasm detector
...and they just keep coming
Max Scherzer
David Price
Don Kelly
Delmon Young
Jacoby Ellsbury

For those curious like me
Villa signed 1 year with the Blue Jays for $2.3 MM. He started 13 games for them last year in addition to relief appearances.
Didn't we pay Gagne 10?
After a godawful season?
They paid $10 million
After he had a mediocre season, which came after a year missed to injury, which came after four incredible seasons.

I'll go on record saying that I fully supported the Gagne signing beause the team had money to spend, and it was only a 1 year deal.

I thought it was batshiat-crazy ridiculous
He was four years removed from his last full season, with steroids and surgery in between.
Mark Attanasio is the best.
Yay!
Does anybody remember what days Braun’s arby is set for? I seem to think that it should be happening right about now.

In regards to the other three arbitration eligibles
According to Haudricourt
#Brewers announced no deals with Marcum, Loe, Veras before noon deadline for exchanging figures. Can keep negotiating though.
Contributor on Brew Crew Ball, Commissioner of Prognostikeggers, Owner of a broken sarcasm detector
Wow.
Great news, considering how freaked out we all were when K-Rod accepted arby. We have one of the best setup-closer combos in the league for about $8.5m.
Hah. That's so sad for John Axford.

Guess who's taking notes for his first arbitration hearing?
Contributor on Brew Crew Ball, Commissioner of Prognostikeggers, Owner of a broken sarcasm detector
Wait, that doesn't make sense.
Never mind. He would be taking notes if he could use K-Rod as a reason to get more money, but he can’t.
Contributor on Brew Crew Ball, Commissioner of Prognostikeggers, Owner of a broken sarcasm detector
Not really sad
Just a fact of life. Axford isn’t arbitration-eligible, while K-Rod is a 10-yr veteran.

Exactly
Axford isn’t quite as good as K-Rod was when K-Rod was only making $400k.

by SRB on Jan 17, 2012 3:27 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
Actually, I have an excellent knuckleball.
I don’t think there’s much of a market for 42-yr old knuckleball pitchers though.
Mark Attanasio is the best.
I see that Hamels has got a one year deal for $15million in arbritration
This is the highest ever for a SP in arbritration before they have reached free agency.
It also makes the Phillies close to $170million in payroll. There must be alot of pressure on them this year with a payroll that is even higher than last year.
I'm laughing a little at this
Guess who exchanged arbitration figures today and will probably break that? I’ll give you a few hints. He plays for the Giants, is a better pitcher than Cole Hamels, and has the initials TL.
(Of course, I’m not sure if he can use the Hamels contract in his negotiations. Hamels has 5+ years, and he has 4+ years.)
Contributor on Brew Crew Ball, Commissioner of Prognostikeggers, Owner of a broken sarcasm detector
In his 3rd year he's absolutely going to break the arb system though
I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get north of 25 million
Forget about his third year.
Heyman is thinking that Lincecum will have a record-setting arbitration number this season, easily topping the $18.5 million record that Jeter requested as a non-FA.
Contributor on Brew Crew Ball, Commissioner of Prognostikeggers, Owner of a broken sarcasm detector
It does easily top that.
Lincecum files for $21.5 million, Giants counter at $17 million. Both are arbitration-filing records (for player and club).
Contributor on Brew Crew Ball, Commissioner of Prognostikeggers, Owner of a broken sarcasm detector
What on earth is he going to get next year if he carries on pitching the way he has done?
He almost certainly will set a new record for any player.
Tony Larussa is up for arbitration?
TLR, TL, I know, but even the first two letters bring back bad memories.
K-Rod: $8M, James Loney: $6.4M
See, it’s not so bad!
If Plush had to pick Wearwolf or Vampire, I'm a Wearwolf!
only 8 mil?
the fact he took a paycut by taking this over going to arbitration and potentially getting $14 mil is pretty awesome. it also makes him extremely valuable as a tradechip. love it.
I doubt he would've gotten that much in arbitration
but it seems likely that he would’ve made more than $8M.
Granted, maybe he and his agent were seriously concerned that they’d lose in arbitration and end up getting paid even less. I wouldn’t think that would happen, but who knows… K-Rod’s case was unprecedented.
I would've thought DM would submit a number around $8-9M
since that’s about what Madson and Bell signed for. The way I was looking at it, $8M was a best-case scenario.
I updated the FanShot for it
Didn’t want to put this ahead of the prospect vote just yet.
Contributor on Brew Crew Ball, Commissioner of Prognostikeggers, Owner of a broken sarcasm detector
I guess it's not that surprising that guys are getting signed.
Prior to Hart’s case, DM had never gone to arbitration.

That K-Rod deal could have been WAY worse for us.
As it stands, we could still have a little wiggle room in free agency now, and he’s also way more tradeable.
