An article has been posted on CBSSports.com
The first paragraph is worth a chuckle.
Chalk up one more for the so-called mystery team. First it was Cliff Lee going to the Phillies, then Albert Pujols heading to the Angels. Now Prince Fielder has shocked the baseball world by signing with the Detroit Tigers, a team that hadn’t even been remotely connected to him in rumors the entire offseason. The robust first baseman has signed a nine-year contract worth $214 million, CBSSports.com insider Jon Heyman has learned.

Always thought
he was chasing years, not money (the money was a given, IMO) and the process dragged on awhile more than anyone expected, so I’m sure Prince took the best offer on the table
BUT
I’m a little shocked he’d follow in his dad’s footsteps in Detroit. My guess is that’s killing him just a bit. He seems to go out of his way to separate himself from that legacy and its going to be impossible to do with the Tigers. I feel a little bad for him that it came to that.
He just signed a forever-gazillionaire contract
His father’s years in Detroit just became a footnote to that

youre nuts
if you think that won’t be the story line his entire time there. This is cliche journalistic heaven.
He will be answering questions about his dad for at least the first 6 months and then any time he approaches any of his dad’s records.
First it’ll be about how he spent so much time there as a kid. Then they’ll move on to their strained relationship and speculation on how Cecil feels about it and lots of Cecil quotes and whether than can reconcile. Then it’ll be “chasing his dad’s shadow” every time he reaches one of his dad’s milestones.
Consider the number of “rematch” stories we’ve seen about Pats/Giants in the SB this year. Writers can’t resist a “Storyline”

There’s no way any of the other suitors were offering anywhere near this contract.
This was my first thought too.
I’d bet my next paycheck there wasn’t another team offering more than ~180. And I’d be surprised if anyone but the Nationals was offering more than 150.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
But do we actually know who all the suitors were?
Detroit wasn’t even listed among the “finalists”, but yet managed to be the high bidder.

I was just thinking how defense was supposedly the new market inefficiency in baseball
Jack Z. and his Mariners fielded perhaps the best defensive teams ever the past few years. But that didn’t help them win games.
So, go the other direction and you get the Brewers and Cardinals.

this is incredibly true
It’ll be interesting for the Brewers this year because the defense has improved but the offense is the wild card. You could argue that losing Prince will mean the offense will regress, but they did replace two black holes in the lineup, so it could even out. I’m not a huge advanced stats guy though, so I have nothing to back it up haha

Defense is quickly becoming the old market inefficiency again
With teams signing guys who can’t hit for significant money to save ~5-10 runs on defense.
The pendulum may be getting ready to swing the other way again.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
I think its pretty clear that middle ground is probably the right way to go
If you’re all defense but can’t hit, you’re the Mariners. If you’re all offense and can’t defend, you’re the Cardinals.

For losing Sabathia and Fielder to FA
We netted a No. 27 pick, two supplementals and a second-rounder.

The # of games we had CC is irrelevant
We had rights to compensation — that was part of his value in the trade — and ended up getting dicked because NYY signed Texiera in the same offseason.

The difference in value between picks 15-20 and 25-30 is way less than the difference between 25-30 and 55-60.

Yeah he'll have to play
but we don’t really know anything about how he defends at 1B, just at 3B. Also, as a reminder, here’s the number of PA’s specific stats take to stabilize:
Offense Statistics:
50 PA: Swing%
100 PA: Contact Rate
150 PA: Strikeout Rate, Line Drive Rate, Pitches/PA
200 PA: Walk Rate, Ground Ball Rate, GB/FB
250 PA: Fly Ball Rate
300 PA: Home Run Rate, HR/FB
500 PA: OBP, SLG, OPS, 1B Rate, Popup Rate
550 PA: ISO
Thanks to FanGraphs for that. So, keeping in mind that Mat Gamel’s entire major league sample size has consisted of 194 PAs over parts of 4 different seasons, I always hesitate to use any of those statistics for projecting.

the just ever so slightly important factor that the Tigers offered him millions and millions more than the Brewers did. I guess I don't understand
Why is a player a bad person or “greedy” if he chooses to take more money to play somewhere else and not take a huge discount and the place that happened to draft him?
Are you “greedy” for leaving your job for a huge raise at another company? It’s how the real world works, not just baseball.
Exactly
If someone chooses to turn down money to stay at a club he loves that’s fantastic and they deserve to be shown considerable support. However, if someone leaves to get more money then good luck to them…

Its really just that people are pissed about the free agent system
that’s the only logical explanation I can think of. Its so much easier to say “Player X is a terrible human being and disrespects the fans because he didn’t take less money to stay with Team A. Obviously by signing for _ more dollars with Team B, he is a selfish, greedy asshole” than it is to say “The free agency system in baseball (really any sport) has made it so that there are very few players who spend their entire careers with one team, and that makes me sad.”

It doesn't bother me at all
We don’t get any of our players from Wisconsin to begin with. They mostly come from California and Texas and Florida, and they go to college at Notre Dame and Cal State and Miami, and play their minor league ball in Helena and Huntsville and Nashville. Then eventually they play for us, for a few years, and they move on. These are great guys who chase a dream, and are fun to watch play. We don’t own them, we borrow them, and just because we like them doesn’t mean they have to stay, and just because they don’t stay doesn’t mean we have to stop liking them.

I just think it’s sad when they leave a team that they have come to be associated with, and I don’t think MLB fully understands the value of having identifiable players on every team who stay there for a good portion of their careers.

Greinke only pitched in 2011 for the Brewers

I just didn't understand why you'd take his stats from a different team

I was intending to clarify that
But his wording technically allows 2010 despite ZG not being a Brewer.
Oh you're including his 2010 with the Royals?
I wouldn’t do that

I was asking who, from the subset of current Brewers, was most valuable from 2010-11
Alex Gonzalez is fair game too, though I don’t think he out fWAR-ed Fielder

Because they are baseball players on the Brewers? Versus the one who is now on the Tigers?

Only Braun and Greinke.

The difference between ZG and Prince is negligible
But yes, he’s technically .1 higher.
Gallardo, if you include batting, yes. I do not, however, include playing time. Total value includes injury time.
In class, just found out the news
I’m going to be watching a lot of Tigers games this year.
We’ll miss you, big fella. You were the straw that stirred the drink.

Wow
That’s a lot of money. But good for him. Congrats to Prince. More than anything, I’m glad there’s now no chance of him becoming a Cub or a Cardinal.
My goodness.

I know it's all been said ad nauseum by now, but....
1. So long Prince, and thanks for all the fun!
2. Go Tigers.

Oh, and, while I'm pretty comfortable with my own abilities...
… I wish I were half as good at my job as Boras is at his.
What a ridiculous contract to get in this market and this late in the game.
There almost has to be a buyout 3-5 years in that we haven’t heard about yet, right?

If he is in fact suspended.

No, he doesn't.
However, I don’t think the Brewers get to keep the money. I believe it usually gets donated to a charity.

Whither the Milwaukee Brewers in 2012
You guys are in for a long season. Hate to say that because I like it when the Brewers are a good club, but not as good as the Cubs.
You need to come to grips with the fact that a rebuilding job is in order asap. No more juiced Braun and no more Prince is awfully hard to overcome. Spin Gallardo and Greinke for top tier prospects. Trade Weeks to the highest bidder. That’s what I’d do. You have a very good manager in Roenicke. And presumably enough payroll room to support a decent team when it is time to win once again.

I'm not sure he was saying the Brewers are better than the Cubs,
I took it as a qualifier to his “I like when the Brewers are good” statement.

Whither the Chicago Cubs in 2012
You guys are in for a long season. Hate to say that because I like it when the Cubs are a good club, but not as good as the Brewers.
You need to come to grips with the fact that a rebuilding job is in order asap. No more hot-head Zambrano and no more Ramirez is awfully hard to overcome. Spin Garza and Dempster for top tier prospects. Trade DeJesus to the highest bidder. That’s what I’d do. You have a very good manager in Sveum. And presumably enough payroll room to support a decent team when it is time to win once again.

I bet you in 9 years when he's 36 we can afford him.
For some reason, I can’t shake this feeling that he’ll come back here and wind down his hall of fame career where it started. Hank Aaron style.

I hope the Detroit fans understand that he's a notorious slow starter
If they expect him to tip the fences from opening day and he doesn’t heat up until the second half like usual, it could set the tone for his stay in Detroit. Nine years is a long time to play for an unappreciative crowd.
Mark Attanasio is the best.
Buster Olney on SportsCenter just said the plan is to play Cabrera at 3rd
There’s no way that could go wrong…. right?
"Well they can't test for LSD, so I started frying on weekends"
Jinx was just thinking the same thing
They better both Mash at the plate to make up for the missed balls and errors lol
"It's a joke. It's all a joke.
Detroits defense on the corners is going to intresting to dismal
With Prince at 1st and Cabrera at 3rd it could be a fun year at Comerica

Sigh to be interesting to dismal sorry MN I did not proof read my Paper before turning it in

and not playing in the cushy warm MP in spring and fall I expect the injury bug to finally catch up to the big man.
