Haven’t bumped this up to front page yet, waiting for confirmation + a little time for prospect poll to get top spot on page.

An article has been posted on CBSSports.com

The first paragraph is worth a chuckle.

Chalk up one more for the so-called mystery team. First it was Cliff Lee going to the Phillies, then Albert Pujols heading to the Angels. Now Prince Fielder has shocked the baseball world by signing with the Detroit Tigers, a team that hadn’t even been remotely connected to him in rumors the entire offseason. The robust first baseman has signed a nine-year contract worth $214 million, CBSSports.com insider Jon Heyman has learned.

Always thought

he was chasing years, not money (the money was a given, IMO) and the process dragged on awhile more than anyone expected, so I’m sure Prince took the best offer on the table

BUT

I’m a little shocked he’d follow in his dad’s footsteps in Detroit. My guess is that’s killing him just a bit. He seems to go out of his way to separate himself from that legacy and its going to be impossible to do with the Tigers. I feel a little bad for him that it came to that.

youre nuts

if you think that won’t be the story line his entire time there. This is cliche journalistic heaven.

He will be answering questions about his dad for at least the first 6 months and then any time he approaches any of his dad’s records.

First it’ll be about how he spent so much time there as a kid. Then they’ll move on to their strained relationship and speculation on how Cecil feels about it and lots of Cecil quotes and whether than can reconcile. Then it’ll be “chasing his dad’s shadow” every time he reaches one of his dad’s milestones.

Consider the number of “rematch” stories we’ve seen about Pats/Giants in the SB this year. Writers can’t resist a “Storyline”

by ThroughBeingCool on Jan 24, 2012 2:58 PM CST up reply actions

I was just thinking how defense was supposedly the new market inefficiency in baseball

Jack Z. and his Mariners fielded perhaps the best defensive teams ever the past few years. But that didn’t help them win games.

So, go the other direction and you get the Brewers and Cardinals.

by Charlie Marlow on Jan 24, 2012 3:04 PM CST up reply actions

this is incredibly true

It’ll be interesting for the Brewers this year because the defense has improved but the offense is the wild card. You could argue that losing Prince will mean the offense will regress, but they did replace two black holes in the lineup, so it could even out. I’m not a huge advanced stats guy though, so I have nothing to back it up haha

I am too drunk to taste this chicken.

by ThroughBeingCool on Jan 24, 2012 3:08 PM CST up reply actions

Defense is quickly becoming the old market inefficiency again

With teams signing guys who can’t hit for significant money to save ~5-10 runs on defense.

The pendulum may be getting ready to swing the other way again.

Now that's great tasting chicken!

by Kyle Lobner on Jan 24, 2012 3:16 PM CST up reply actions

I think its pretty clear that middle ground is probably the right way to go

If you’re all defense but can’t hit, you’re the Mariners. If you’re all offense and can’t defend, you’re the Cardinals.

FWIW, Brewers were actually 9th best in UZR/150 with a 0.9, and 6th in wRC+ with 105.

in which prospects/draft picks have suddenly been valued more than they EVER have in the history of the game?

I mean, we made that trade out of desperation to make the playoffs, and got a lot of value out of it, but there was most certainly an expectation that we’d get a first-rounder back in the deal.

by Charlie Marlow on Jan 24, 2012 4:25 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah he'll have to play

but we don’t really know anything about how he defends at 1B, just at 3B. Also, as a reminder, here’s the number of PA’s specific stats take to stabilize:

Offense Statistics:

50 PA: Swing%
100 PA: Contact Rate
150 PA: Strikeout Rate, Line Drive Rate, Pitches/PA
200 PA: Walk Rate, Ground Ball Rate, GB/FB
250 PA: Fly Ball Rate
300 PA: Home Run Rate, HR/FB
500 PA: OBP, SLG, OPS, 1B Rate, Popup Rate
550 PA: ISO

Thanks to FanGraphs for that. So, keeping in mind that Mat Gamel’s entire major league sample size has consisted of 194 PAs over parts of 4 different seasons, I always hesitate to use any of those statistics for projecting.

I was intending to clarify that

But his wording technically allows 2010 despite ZG not being a Brewer.

by cwolf20 on Jan 24, 2012 4:38 PM CST up reply actions

Oh you're including his 2010 with the Royals?

I wouldn’t do that

I was asking who, from the subset of current Brewers, was most valuable from 2010-11

Alex Gonzalez is fair game too, though I don’t think he out fWAR-ed Fielder

The difference between ZG and Prince is negligible

But yes, he’s technically .1 higher.

Gallardo, if you include batting, yes. I do not, however, include playing time. Total value includes injury time.

In class, just found out the news

I’m going to be watching a lot of Tigers games this year.

We’ll miss you, big fella. You were the straw that stirred the drink.

If Fielder was the straw

what was Braun? The ice that keeps the drink cool?

by sjlee on Jan 25, 2012 10:57 AM CST up reply actions

Wow

That’s a lot of money. But good for him. Congrats to Prince. More than anything, I’m glad there’s now no chance of him becoming a Cub or a Cardinal.

My goodness.

I know it's all been said ad nauseum by now, but....

1. So long Prince, and thanks for all the fun!
2. Go Tigers.

Oh, and, while I'm pretty comfortable with my own abilities...

… I wish I were half as good at my job as Boras is at his.

What a ridiculous contract to get in this market and this late in the game.

There almost has to be a buyout 3-5 years in that we haven’t heard about yet, right?

No, he doesn't.

However, I don’t think the Brewers get to keep the money. I believe it usually gets donated to a charity.

Whither the Milwaukee Brewers in 2012

You guys are in for a long season. Hate to say that because I like it when the Brewers are a good club, but not as good as the Cubs.

You need to come to grips with the fact that a rebuilding job is in order asap. No more juiced Braun and no more Prince is awfully hard to overcome. Spin Gallardo and Greinke for top tier prospects. Trade Weeks to the highest bidder. That’s what I’d do. You have a very good manager in Roenicke. And presumably enough payroll room to support a decent team when it is time to win once again.

The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.

I'm not sure he was saying the Brewers are better than the Cubs,

I took it as a qualifier to his “I like when the Brewers are good” statement.

You need to come to grips with the fact that a rebuilding job is in order asap. No more hot-head Zambrano and no more Ramirez is awfully hard to overcome. Spin Garza and Dempster for top tier prospects. Trade DeJesus to the highest bidder. That’s what I’d do. You have a very good manager in Sveum. I bet you in 9 years when he's 36 we can afford him.

For some reason, I can’t shake this feeling that he’ll come back here and wind down his hall of fame career where it started. Hank Aaron style.

I hope the Detroit fans understand that he's a notorious slow starter

If they expect him to tip the fences from opening day and he doesn’t heat up until the second half like usual, it could set the tone for his stay in Detroit. Nine years is a long time to play for an unappreciative crowd.

Mark Attanasio is the best.
