Who's he replacing, Westbrook? Lohse?
Westbrook 2011 xFIP: 4.08
Lohse 2011 xFIP: 4.04
Oswalt 2011 xFIP: 3.95
For a pitcher that doesn’t strike many people out, at least he has that amazing defense behind him.
Solve for X: 5.5 (Fielder) + 0.3 (McGehee) + 0.5 (Betancourt) < X (Gamel) + 3.6 (Ramirez) + 1.1 (Gonzalez)... X >= 1.7 fWAR!
the Cards will be getting a pitcher who can barely pitch 160 innings
Nbd
Go ahead, make my day.

He's a 200 inning guy
Don’t sell him short, he’s very good
Mark Attanasio is the best.

when he's healthy
High risk, high reward. This signing would have been not so good for the Brewers—too much risk—but the Cards had a rotation consisting of Carpenter, Wainwright (big ol’ red flag) and 3 servings of meh.
Jaime Garcia is really good, unfortunately
I would rather have him in 2012 than Chris Carpenter, and who knows what Wainwright will do.

Too much risk?
Depending on what the deal is, it may not be much of a risk. He pitched solidly the last two months of last season, so it appears that the injury is behind him. Plus, they still have Narveson and Estrada.
Based on what?
Last season when he missed the month of July due to injury, then came back and pitched the last two months?
If Dave Duncan
were still the pitching coach, this would worry me as this is exactly his kind of project. He could turn Oswalt into a Cy Young contender again. But thankfully, Duncan isn’t the pitching coach anymore – so no worries on my end.

He may not be a Cy Young contender
but he’s still a very good pitcher.

2011 showed a real decline in skills and is now way just a bad year.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
*is in no way just a bad year.

He missed a month of the season to injury
but finished the season strong. He may not be as good as he was, but he’s still a good pitcher.

Guess I wasn't laying it on thick enough.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
This signing doesn't freak me out
But it’s still a really smart move, I think. It gives them six capable starting pitchers, and since nobody plans on a rotation going all year with five guys, that’s a really valuable asset to have.

I totally agree with this
I cannot understand why Oswalt was not signed before this.
I much prefer this over say, signing Buehrle (who is the same age) for 4 years and $54million.

They are becoming the 2004 Houston Astros
OF/1B- Berkman
OF- Beltran
SP- Oswalt.
Just need Lidge, and get Pettitte, Clemens, Biggio, Kent and Bagwell to come out of retirement.

Lidge just signed with the Nationals.

Sometimes when you try to shoot the moon, you lose.
Sorry Cardinals.
Applying pop culture to Brewers discussions since 2009, earning the nickname of "Our Little Abed".

Didn’t we have a countdown to spring training on the sidebar last year? I miss that.
Ugh, Shortstop

For whatever it's worth (possibly posturing, but who knows):

Saying it’s not a done deal.

Time... yes
But I’m not sure about the money. If the Cardinals and Rangers are interested in him, I doubt the Brewers would be able to put the best offer on the table.
