Today In Brewer History: County Stadium's Playoff Debut

The first postseason home game in Milwaukee baseball history was played 55 years ago today.

The 1957 Milwaukee Braves are arguably the greatest team in Milwaukee baseball history. Led by Cy Young Award winner Warren Spahn and NL MVP Hank Aaron, they won the NL pennant and on this day in 1957 they returned to Milwaukee to play the first postseason baseball game in the city's history.

The Braves and New York Yankees had split games one and two of the Fall Classic in New York, with the Yankees taking Game One 3-1 and the Braves winning 4-2 in Game Two. Milwaukee fell behind 2-1 in the series on this day, though, losing 12-3. The Yankees hit three home runs off starter Bob Buhl and five relievers and never looked back.

The series, of course, turned around after this. The Braves won the series' fourth, fifth and seventh games en route to Milwaukee's first championship.

With help from Brewerfan.net and the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to:

Today is also the anniversary of the final game of the Brewer playoff run in 2008, as the Phillies beat Jeff Suppan and the Crew 6-2 to eliminate them three games to one in the NLDS. We covered that event in this space last year.
