Brewers A-Z: Glenn Braggs

Author's personal collection.

The former second round pick patrolled the outfield in Milwaukee for five seasons.

Right-handed hitting outfielder Glenn Braggs came to Milwaukee with pretty high expectations: The second round pick in the 1983 draft was a career .331/.431/.561 hitter in 388 minor league games, and was the California League MVP in 1984. His 1987 Donruss card said he "figures to be the Brewers' regular left fielder for years to come:"

Braggs' first full season as a Brewer was his best one, as he appeared in 132 games and hit .269/.332/.430. He struggled a bit and appeared in just 72 games in 1988 due to a shoulder injury, but Donruss still believed in him enough to make him card #103 in their 1989 set:

Braggs appeared in 144 games in 1989 but didn't hit much, posting a .247/.305/.370 line. Donruss used the exact same paragraph of info from the back of his '89 card for the '90 version, #264:

The Brewers traded Braggs to the Reds in June of 1990 and he went on to appear in four postseason games for the eventual World Champions. He stayed with Cincinnati for two more seasons, then played four for Yokohama in Japan before calling it a career.

With help from the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to 1998 Brewer Bob Hamelin. He turns 45.

Today is also the sixth anniversary of Craig Counsell returning to the Brewers as a free agent in 2006. We covered that event in Today In Brewer History last year.

After over 500 installments spanning two seasons and a full offseason, there are some days where I've exhausted all of the available content for Today In Brewer History. Brewers A-Z is a supplemental feature to help fill in the gaps in my historical calendar. You can see past installments in the series in its special section.
