Monday's Frosty Mug
Some things to read while 8-bit dancing.
We're 46 days away from Opening Day, and spring training is officially underway as pitchers and catchers reported to Maryvale Saturday and underwent physicals yesterday (FanShot). The only pitcher unaccounted for is Francisco Rodriguez, who is late for undisclosed reasons but expected to report by the middle of the week. Meanwhile, Rodriguez is reportedly suing former agents Paul Kinzer and Arn Tellem for failing to submit his no-trade list last season, leading to him being dealt to the Brewers and moved out of a closer role.
Elsewhere in things that aren't happening, Shaun Marcum confirmed over the weekend that he and the team aren't currently working on a contract extension to prevent his pending free agency. Dan Moore of SB Nation St. Louis says it's pretty clear the Brewers are waiting to see if Marcum is healthy before making any commitment. Eric Seidman of FanGraphs suggests that next winter's free agent market is loaded with pitching and the Brewers may be able to get a better deal by waiting to sign Marcum (or someone else) until then.
Of course, if you mention the name "Shaun Marcum" and the phrase "contract extension," you're obligated to once again point out that Zack Greinke is also approaching free agency. Jack Moore listed Greinke as the Brewers' "player to see" in a SweetSpot post. Marcum and Greinke are, of course, big parts of Adam McCalvy's preview of the Brewer rotation.
Chris Narveson is also a key part of that conversation. He told Tom Haudricourt he's working on learning to throw a cutter this spring after seeing how much it helped Randy Wolf last year.
I haven't heard if Rickie Weeks is already in camp, but at least one person is predicting a huge season from him: You Can't Predict Baseball unveiled their predictions for the 2012 season over the weekend and suggested Weeks could lead the Brewers in home runs. He was fourth behind Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun and Corey Hart last season. Aramis Ramirez may also have something to say about this. Weeks was also #6 on MLB Network's list of the game's top second basemen.
John Axford is in camp, but for the third straight year his journey to Maryvale contained an unexpected adventure: Todd Rosiak (linked via Twitter) has more details on the passport issues that delayed his family's trip to Phoenix this spring.
Nyjer Morgan, meanwhile, took no chances. He told Tom Haudricourt he's already been in camp for two weeks.
Here's today's reminder that we still don't know what's going on with Ryan Braun's appeal. Jayson Stark of ESPN listed the Brewers and Braun's situation as the NL's third biggest spring training story, and his poll of executives resulted in the Brewers being named the NL's third least improved team. @Ladywezen has a potential explanation for the extended delays in the appeal process.
Non-roster and/or unlikely major league pitchers were a hot topic of conversation over the weekend:
- Santo Manzanillo, who separated his shoulder in a car accident this winter, is already throwing.
- Ryan Topp of Disciples Of Uecker has a look at the pitching depth that likely won't make the Opening Day roster but could impact the team this season.
- Nick Prill of The Brewers Bar has a look at five non-roster invitee pitchers.
- Reviewing the Brew listed Daniel Meadows as their "Spring Training Player To Watch."
- Brewer Nation profiled Amaury Rivas and Tim Dillard as part of their "Brewers By the (Jersey) Numbers" series.
- Mark Rogers says he's ready to pitch this spring following double carpal tunnel surgery last season, but still has six games remaining on his PED suspension. He's blaming a tainted supplement for the positive test.
- New Nashville broadcaster Jeff Hem is on Twitter. (h/t @Joe_Block)
- Tyler Thornburg has heard the way scouts talk about his height.
- Baseball America has a post on Zelous Wheeler, but it's subscriber-only.
Even with a lot going on in Brewer camp, this might be today's best news: WMLW is adding an HD channel on March 12, meaning the Brewer games broadcast on that network this season should be upgraded from the low-quality standard definition they used last year.
If you haven't planned your spring training trip yet but you're still thinking about it, maybe this will help you make up your mind: The team is giving away leftover John Axford bobbleheads on March 6, Nyjer Morgan rally towels on March 13 and Zack Greinke towels on March 27.
If you don't go to Maryvale to get that stuff, odds are some of it will end up here: Bob Brainerd of OnMilwaukee.com has a great story on the Brewer time capsule under Miller Park.
Around baseball:
Braves: Pitcher Tim Hudson will open the season on the DL following back surgery.
Mariners: Re-signed outfielder Mike Wilson to a minor league deal.
Nationals: Outfielder Mike Cameron announced his retirement (FanShot).
Phillies: Signed pitcher Kyle Kendrick to a two year, $7.5 million contract.
Pirates: Acquired pitcher A.J. Burnett from the Yankees for a minor league pitcher and outfielder.
Yankees: Signed outfielder Raul Ibanez (one year, $1 million) and pitcher Clay Rapada (minor league deal). Also, pitcher Hideki Okajima failed his physical and his contract will likely be voided.
As one might expect, there's lots of stuff out there about Mike Cameron:
- Cameron is now on Twitter. (h/t @mpbMKE)
- Aaron Gleeman notes that Cameron finished with more Wins Above Replacement than Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett.
- The Mariners won 61.3% of their games with Mike Cameron in the lineup, the best mark for any player in franchise history.
- John Sickels of Minor League Ball has a look back at Cameron as a prospect.
- Beyond The Box Score has an extensive infographic looking at Cameron and other hitters who have struck out over 1500 times.
- Jeff Cirillo will be working as a scout in the Angels organization this season.
- Lone Star Ball has video of a David Hulse at bat from his time with the Rangers where he lined four straight pitches into the opposing dugout.
- 1989 Brewer LaVel Freeman, who celebrated his birthday on Saturday, was @MLBastian's Daily Cup of Coffee.
The Brewers aren't the only ones talking about expiring contracts this spring: The Cardinals have tabled talks regarding a new deal for catcher Yadier Molina, and Reds manager Dusty Baker says he's not concerned by the fact that 2012 is the last year on his contract.
Today in baseball economics: The average arbitration-eligible player received an 89% raise this winter, the lowest since 1996 and down from 123% last offseason.
This morning's edition of Today In Brewer History notes the 71st birthday of 1974 Brewer Clyde Wright, the only pitcher in franchise history to lose 20 games in a season. Chris Jaffe of The Hardball Times notes that it's also been 6000 days since Craig Counsell's MLB debut.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to get my calculator.
Drink up.

Important about the Rodriguez/agents thing
Johnson said that Rodriguez is upset at the circumstances that led to his trade to Milwaukee, but not with the organization itself.
WMLW
So since their regular def channel was actually below regular definition, will the HD channel actually be full regular definition?
I’m normally not this miserable of a person, but I don’t have high hopes for WMLW.

Through MLB.TV, I'm pretty sure the broadcasts were widescreen, if not HD
I think they just didn’t have an HD channel to broadcast them. Maybe I’ll have to go to the archives and check.
They should’ve had retro uni night the same as WMLW nights to complete the illusion.

That retro idea would have been awesome.
If MLB.tv had it widescreen, it only could have been a proportional stretch, since there was no initial widescreen feed.
And WMLW will probably be running a 720i feed, if I had to guess. Converting to HD is a huge expense for any station (WMLW’s parent station, CBS-58, still runs SD news broadcasts), and there’s not a huge upside to investing state-of-the-art equipment in a secondary channel. 58 is kind of the redheaded stepchild of Milwaukee stations to begin with. Still, it’ll be better than what they had last year.
Manager briefing!
TH just posted the first manager’s briefing of the spring and RRR talks bullpen and Braddock.
Inaji is back with the team
From jsonline, Saito’s translator is back this year for Aoki who doesn’t speak a lick of English. I wonder how that’s going to impact the team. Not even being able to do some minor friendly interaction could make team chemistry difficult.
He will be "not birthday" before you know it.

Can he teach Japanese?
Someone needs to let Morgan and Gomez know what “I got it” is in Japanese. I keep thinking of that infamous story about one of the early Mets teams having problems with the shortstop and centerfielder going for the same ball because one of them didn’t know any Spanish. The Anglo learned “I got it”…and then got run over by the LF who didn’t know any Spanish.
I'm pretty sure if I heard somebody yelling something, even if unintelligble, I would get the message
Then again, I’m not a pro athlete…
Solve for X: 5.5 (Fielder) + 0.3 (McGehee) + 0.5 (Betancourt) < X (Gamel) + 3.6 (Ramirez) + 1.1 (Gonzalez)... X >= 1.7 fWAR!
Except sometimes they're yelling "YOU YOU YOU" or if the sun is a problem "IN" or "BACK"

MINE MINE MINE works.
But yeah I can see the issues for the ones directly at someone where you really need to rely on the IN or BACK.

One thing that sticks out in the Jayson Stark article
Is that 20 executives he surveyed overall thought that Pujols deal was the best FA deal of the off-season!?
The vote probably got spread out.
When you ask 20 people a relatively open-ended question, 4-5 votes might be enough for first place.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
I know what you mean
But I think it is more a 1st 2nd 3rd ballot looking at the numbers and when looking at the 10 years of this deal I am surprised that they thought that this best value signing of the winter.
It's almost time to start wrapping the players in bubble wrap and only bringing them out to work.
Tommy Hanson had to go out and drive his car. Look what happened.
Hanson’s accident was a 1-car accident. Blew a tire and bumped his head. They checked for possible concussion. No word yet. #Braves

Another quiet Monday...
What’s the off-topic discussion choice for today?
Contributor on Brew Crew Ball, Commissioner of Prognostikeggers, Owner of a broken sarcasm detector
I have some trivia!
What projected regular starters for the 2012 Brewers (excluding bullpen) were never Baseball America Top 100 prospects? There are three.
Solve for X: 5.5 (Fielder) + 0.3 (McGehee) + 0.5 (Betancourt) < X (Gamel) + 3.6 (Ramirez) + 1.1 (Gonzalez)... X >= 1.7 fWAR!
Everyone but Yo and Greinke...so Wolf, Marcum, Narvson.
In the bullpen, I’d guess Parra is the only top 100 guy.
Get a ife broseph
Shaun Marcum is one of them!
Randy Wolf = #96 (pre-1999)
Chris Narveson = #86 (pre-2002), also the Cardinals #1 prospect IIRC
Bullpen
Manny Parra = #69 (pre-2004)
Francisco Rodriguez = #10 (pre-2003)
Those are the highest rankings, some were ranked multiple times
Solve for X: 5.5 (Fielder) + 0.3 (McGehee) + 0.5 (Betancourt) < X (Gamel) + 3.6 (Ramirez) + 1.1 (Gonzalez)... X >= 1.7 fWAR!
Interesting about Marcum
Did he used to throw harder? Seems like its really hard for Minor League guys to make prospect lists with solid fastball velocity.
Looks he had some pretty awesome MiLB stats. Never walking more than 2 per 9, and striking out 9 per 9 IP in the minors has to be really unique.
Get a ife broseph
I don't think he threw hard, that's probably why he *didn't* make the list
He was never even in the Blue Jays top 10, although he got “Best Changeup” (pre-2005, pre-2006) and “Best Control” (pre-2005)
Solve for X: 5.5 (Fielder) + 0.3 (McGehee) + 0.5 (Betancourt) < X (Gamel) + 3.6 (Ramirez) + 1.1 (Gonzalez)... X >= 1.7 fWAR!
Bonus points if anyone can name the highest ranked prospect currently in the Brewers system
Though that one’s not too hard
Solve for X: 5.5 (Fielder) + 0.3 (McGehee) + 0.5 (Betancourt) < X (Gamel) + 3.6 (Ramirez) + 1.1 (Gonzalez)... X >= 1.7 fWAR!
Slow Day
Off the top of my Head….I would have to go Lucroy, Hart and Gonzalez.

Lucroy is another one!
Corey Hart = #91 (pre-2003)
Alex Gonzalez = #17 (pre-1999)
Solve for X: 5.5 (Fielder) + 0.3 (McGehee) + 0.5 (Betancourt) < X (Gamel) + 3.6 (Ramirez) + 1.1 (Gonzalez)... X >= 1.7 fWAR!
Marcum, Lucroy, and Nyjer Morgan are the three
#5 – Aramis Ramirez (1998)
#5 – Rickie Weeks (2004)
#10 – Francisco Rodriguez (2003)
#14 – Zack Greinke (2004)
#16 – Yovani Gallardo (2007)
#17 – Alex Gonzalez (1999)
#26 – Ryan Braun (2007)
#34 – Mat Gamel (2009)
#52 – Carlos Gomez (2008)
#67 – Cesar Izturis (2000)
#69 – Manny Parra (2004)
#86 – Chris Narveson (2002)
#91 – Corey Hart (2003)
#96 – Randy Wolf (1999)
Other noteworthy players in the system:
#2 – Corey Patterson (2001)
#67 – Cesar Izturis (2000)
Solve for X: 5.5 (Fielder) + 0.3 (McGehee) + 0.5 (Betancourt) < X (Gamel) + 3.6 (Ramirez) + 1.1 (Gonzalez)... X >= 1.7 fWAR!

Hey that #2 prospect Corey Patterson....
He could be big! Lets get him on the roster!

#1 Josh Hamilton, #2 Corey Patterson
M-V-P!

Is this for real?
The campaign’s backers have recruited celebrities to help support the cause, including guitarist John Oats, Ellie Kemper of “The Office” and Milwaukee Brewers pitcher John Axford. Each will produce videos to inspire mustached activists to support the STACHE Act. In total seriousness: The group has also secured a promise from H&R Block to donate a charity that provides clean drinking water for each person who participates in the march.
