Game Thread #-7: Brewers (11-14-2) at Dodgers (12-11)

If you had been asked to start a spring training game after pitching 604 major league games in relief, you'd look this confused too.

Get ready for a long stretch of road games: Six of the Brewers' final seven Cactus League games are away from Maryvale.

They'll start that stretch off today when Francisco Rodriguez and the Brewers travel to Camelback Ranch in Glendale to take on Chris Capuano and the Dodgers at 3:05. The game is being broadcast live on FS Wisconsin, or can be heard via Gameday Audio at

Today we'll get to see underrated former Brewer Chris Capuano (3.29 ERA this spring, 4.55/4.04 ERA/FIP in 2011) as part of his first spring in Dodger blue. This is his fifth start of the spring and his first since Saturday, when he allowed two runs on six hits over five innings against the Indians. He struck out a spring-high five batters in that game.

As many of you likely know, Capuano was a Brewer from 2004-2010 but missed all of 2008 and 2009 recovering from his second Tommy John surgery. The 186 innings he pitched as a Met last year were his most in a single season since 2006.

Capuano faced the Brewers twice last season, and here are the results:

Date IP H ER BB K Result
June 7 6 6 1 2 5 Mets win, 2-1
August 20 5.2 5 5 3 7 Brewers win, 11-9

Today would have been Shaun Marcum's day to start, but he's pitching in a minor league game so the start will instead go to Francisco Rodriguez (3.86 ERA this spring, 2.64/2.72 ERA/FIP in 2012), who has pitched in relief in each of his 604 regular season appearances. As best I can tell, Rodriguez hasn't started a game at any level since 2001, when he was a member of the High-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

Rodriguez is making his eighth major league appearance of the spring and his first since Sunday, when he pitched a perfect inning against the Dodgers. He's allowed six hits and two walks in seven innings this spring, striking out two. It's unlikely he'll pitch more than two innings today, if that.

Rodriguez faced the Dodgers four times last season, and worked four scoreless innings while allowing three hits, striking out five and walking none.

Here's today's lineup:

Rickie Weeks 2B
Carlos Gomez CF
Ryan Braun LF
Brooks Conrad 3B
Jonathan Lucroy C
Mat Gamel 1B
Cesar Izturis SS
Norichika Aoki RF
Francisco Rodriguez P

Enjoy the game!
