Since we talked about George Kottaras' best day ever yesterday, to preserve balance in the universe we'll discuss Zack Greinke's awful day today. History will forget that Greinke entered the third inning of today's game working on a perfect game as that was overshadowed by the eight runs on nine hits he allowed while recording just five more outs.
As is usually the case when a pitcher melts down, a little bit of everything went wrong for Greinke today. When the smoke cleared FanGraphs had assigned him a -.319 win percentage added (WPA). Despite the fact that he allowed eight runs and failed to complete the fourth inning, though, this was only Greinke's third worst outing as a Brewer:
|June 16, 2011||Cubs||5.1||8||6||2||10||-.528||Brewers lose, 12-7|
|June 28, 2011||Yankees||2||5||7||3||0||-.355||Brewers lose, 12-2|
|Today||Cubs||3.2||9||8||1||5||-.319||Brewers lose, 8-0|
Interestingly enough, if you add Greinke's Royal years back in this becomes just his 19th worst outing. Most of his worst days as a Royal, though, came way back in 2004 and 2005.
