Today In Brewer History: Overcoming Kevin Barker's Bad Day

On this day in 2000 the Brewers and Astros settled in for a marathon game at County Stadium. The Brewers took a 5-4 lead into the eighth inning but allowed a single run to Houston to tie the game, then neither team scored again until Henry Blanco's sac fly plated Marquis Grissom with the winning run in the bottom of the 16th.

The Brewers had eleven hits over 16 innings, with Blanco, Grissom and Lyle Mouton all having two or more. One Brewer, however, had the worst day of his career: Kevin Barker, playing first base and batting cleanup, went 0-for-8. He's the only Brewer since the team left Seattle to have eight official at bats and no hits in a game.

Unfortunately, things didn't get much better for Barker from there. He went on to go 0-for-10 over his next six games before being returned to the minors on May 28. It was over two full years before he was back in the big leagues with the 2002 Padres.

Today is also the 24th anniversary of Robin Yount collecting career RBI #945 and passing Cecil Cooper for first place on the Brewer all-time list in 1988. We covered that event in this space last year.
