The Milwaukee Brewers have signed shortstop Tommy Manzella to a minor league deal to provide infield depth while Alex Gonzalez is out for the season with a torn ACL, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports:
Manzella, 29, has just 90 games under his belt as a pro, all with the Houston Astros. He was their opening day starter in 2010, but after little more than 280 plate appearances and going just .225/.267/.264, Manzella spent the 2011 season in Triple-A.
He was with Houston affiliate AAA Oklahoma City before being designated for assignment. Claimed off waivers by the Arizona Diamondbacks shortly thereafter, he was removed from their 40-man in September but remained with AAA Reno.
Manzella was hitting .100/.143/.125 in 43 plate appearances with Triple-A Reno this season.
